I tried updating the game in the install directory and it says I already have this version of the game. So then I fired up the game and it still says version 1.0.5 in the upper corner:-?. Oh and I have win XP.

What version of the game do you have, D2D, steam, DVD hard copy etc.?

I dl it from impulse.

When Impulse downloads the patch it puts it in

C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 5

Thsi may not be the location you game is installed, so you may have to manualy install the patch.
