There's just a little thing that I like to get off my chest:
Last week I got the information that SH5 is out, but had no chance to get out and inform myself about it. All SH5 related sites are restricted at work :arrgh!:
So today I did a little googling about the reception of the game in general and was feeling pretty down about it. I didn't come here first on porpose. The voices saying something positive about SH5 remained very few. Bad and repetetive UI (walking around all the time), only one boat, little changes in the missions. etc.
With dread I decided to check upon the Subsim Forum, almost sure what would await me ... I actually expected everyone to be on the barricades. Seems I was partially wrong. As the game seems to be easily modable, and the groundworks like graphics and AI seem to be sound, I'm hopeful again. If the past has told us anything, we have little to expect from UBI when it comes to fixing the problems, but the progress that seems to have been made already in just some two weeks since the first people got the game is really ASTONISHING. I have been around here since SH2 and have never seen anything like it. Although it's very early I feel obliged to express my gratitude (partly in advance I guess) to everyone already involved in making SH5 a better and hopefully great game.

Yep, although the game was not as finished as it should be and has issues, both small and large (not stopping TC before getting sunk by AI ships), it does have some attractive elements and a lot of potential. I do not mind playing it at all for my review.

Hello Neal. I'm really looking forward to your review. Always enjoy reading them. So far I haven't bought the game, but I guess I will anyway. Otherwise it would be the first SH I didn't own.
Lets see what becomes of SH5. Maybe the extremely negative public response will finally bring some results with UBI. Despite all the bashing going on I have a feeling it won't go down the drain here, and that's what really counts. After all without the people here SH3 would have stayed a mediocre sim as well.

Buying at this point in time is a risk though, given the fact that Uplay (Ubi's DRM solution) appears to be suffering connection issues. Quite a few people are unable to play the game, as it does not recognise their net connections (Ubi servers most likely to blame).
While the game itself has many good points, I suggest you read around a little before fronting your money, as you won't get it back.

That's true. If someone is not sure about spending $50 for this game, he definitely should wait a bit. I would suggest waiting to see if Ubisoft is going to support the game with another patch in the next 30 days. :know:
I am enjoying the game as I review it. I will not disguise the fact that the game was unfinished, and has more bugs than is right....but honestly, I am really "wanting" to play the game... honest.

I also have been enjoying it as well. So far I have dodged and OSP/DRM issues as well which is especially important since I have been jumping between two systems and on of them is a distant wi-fi in the bedroom.
I ended up getting the gold version on steam due to being worried my Amazon one wouldn't make it till the predicted delivery of the 9th(Monday). Of course it arrived Friday before I even got around to playing the steam download. Oh well now I have a gift/resale copy.
I haven't been able to figure out where this 110 page guide is though. The manual I found is nowhere near that long.
I am still on the first non-tutorial mission off the east cost of England. So much potential I just hope that patches/modding/add-ons can get us there. I am having flashbacks of the Front Page Sports football fiasco of 99 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_Page_Sports_Football).

It could be a lot worse. It is pretty stable (had one CTD so far), it is playable, and I'm enjoying it. My early impressions are actually more positive then SH3, and I enjoyed that too.
Some people have been expecting GWX with a free camera. That was never going to happen. Once UBI fixes the more pressing bugs, the community - they have already started - will work their magic.
I love Subsim but my patience has been tested in the last few days. Speaking bluntly some of the attitudes from various members have been immature, whiney, and downright spiteful. A complex addition to a product line being kicked out the door early, isn't new. To borrow from BSG, all this has happened before, and it will happen again. It's not ideal, but then again, nothing ever is.

Indeed. I will be waiting to see what the result of this Uplay issue is, before making a firm decision, however the outlook thus far is not exactly good. Believe me, I really, really want to play the game, it's exactly what we've wanted for a long time (despite bugs), the problem for me at least is that damned net connection.
It's just too much of an ask for a single-player game, especially given the fact that my area has somewhat unreliable internet. Thus I will wait, and hopefully patience and persistence will pay off in the end. That or I will be buying it from a bargain bin a year or so from now!

Thanks Nordmann and Neal. The DRM issue is also something I feel quite negatively about, for most of the reasons that have already been discussed. I agree: let's wait what the future brings both with gameplay and that invasive type of copy protection, and decide then if to buy or not. After all I've heard the term "can't be done" quite often with SH3, and many times it could be done nevertheless :)
