View Full Version : Navy Man Joins the Ranks.
Hello all!
After experimenting with the game some a few months back I finally decided to pick it up through steam tonight. I remember this forum from before I went to Bootcamp and decided that with the purchase of SH3 Id join up here too.
Little bit about me, I am a SR (E-1) In the U.S. Navy, pretty new (obviously) to that whole gig but loving every moment of it. Training towards becoming an STG (Sonar Technician Surface Warfare.) I managed to get about 10 or so missions into the SH3 campaign before being sunk by a Depth charge just south of the British mainland. Shortly after I was shipped out to boot camp in Great Lakes Illinois. As such this is my first chance to rejoin the fight of this amazing game.
I enjoy being fully engrossed in the game as much as possible. As such I was curious if there were any specific mods I should look for to enhance the game? I am not yet looking for anything to ramp up the difficulty or whatever (im not comfortable enough manually aiming torpedos and such yet). Also I am aware of the gramaphone packs (which are amazing i might add...) but was curious if there is an existing mod that randomizes the music order in game.
Anywho I look forward to contributing my tails of both in game and Navy adventures to this great board. :arrgh!:

Welcome aboard mate.:arrgh!:
Thank you much :)
edit:
Awhile back (around October or November) I remember finding a threat that had a link to some guys Journal he kept about this game.
He had a liveblog account or something where he documented a career he had in this game and it was very well written. I would love to find it again if anyone knows about it (or something similar). Thanks in advance if anyone finds it
Welcome!
Are you using GWX ?
neg, im not really clear on what it does. Care to clarify?

Hi Sketch, Welcome to Subsim. :shucks:
You can follow the link below my sig to the Grey Wolves website and download a copy of the GWX manual by itself if you like. The website will give you an overview of what GWX does and the manual describes it all in detail.
(The GWX manual is 640+ pages and can be a bit imposing at first glance, (.PDF document) but you can look at the table of contents & just click on the page numbersof things that interest you.)
SH3 with GWX is like a new game.
Just kicks ass :)
You need a clean SH3 installation
Patched to 1.4b
Then you install GWX 3.0 Gold
Then, you can play it.
I suggest using SH3 Commander. You require 2 files
to use SH3 Commander with SH3 + GWX both which are
available from Subsim :
- SH3 commander version 3.2
- A program that you donwload from the GreyWolves website and that is a .exe that will patch SH3 + GWX so it can be used with SH3 commander 3.2

Hi Sketch, welcome aboard.
Just thought I'd add that the previously mentioned SH3 Commander also gives you the option to randomize gramophone tracks when they're played in-game.

Hi Sketch! Welcome aboard!
I highly recommend the GWX 3.0 expansion mod. It has many internal mini-mods that you will need to run JSGME to enable (it is also installed as part of the GWX mod - you will find it in the SHIII folder).
I wrote a story about my campaign, you can find it here:

Oof, thats a large DL size. Unfortunately I will have to hold off on GWX for now as the internet connection on base is worse than Dialup. I am current at Starbucks right now trying to finish the DL on SH3 on its own hehe. I copied that story btw to note;ad so i can read it offline, I like the writing style so far :D

WELCOME ABOARD, Sailor!:sunny:
Reading your report about just starting out really makes me feel old. I got out in 1970!:dead:
Wait so you retired from the navy in 1970? How many years did you serve? Surface or Sub? What was your rate?

Less than two years (early out after Viet Nam service). Surface (USS Brinkley Bass - DD-887). Radioman.

Welcome aboard, Sketch. A former CTO2, here (that would be an IT2 in today's Navy).
Get your mind around the stock game, first. It has its unrealities (ships just blow up, you can fairly safely try for planes, many of the graphics are cheesy), but consider it a "simulator."
Once you are confident, look around the forums, esp the Mods forum, to see what strikes your interest. GWX is my favorite supermod, but I am not much more than a novice myself.
Always lots of skippers here on the forum ready to help.
(But, seriously sailor, until you get frocked, you have no business playing games :salute:)

Indeed indeed. SR Hoffman. Just got here at ASW early last month. I work in BLDG1 every day instead of a traditional working party.
As for the video games deal, Im stuck on holds for an "undetermined period of time." After work and PT are knocked outta the way for the day, I dont have much else to do that does not involve cash or playing pool :P
edit: I am getting the funny idea that I may very well work with you...

Are you waiting to class up for A School? Good luck on your Navy Career and remember "Sailors belong on Ships, Ships belong at Sea, and Land is just a navigational hazard":arrgh!:
