Turn off Shadows

May sound obvious but the decrease in quality is nothing compared to the increase in performance.

...for nvidia cards. It's a known issue at the moment with those.

No need to do this on ATI cards, as it seems the impact of shadows on those is not huge.

I just don't have that problem, got the Gforce 9800 GT,

When I installed the game it asked for me to update the drivers and that was it. Been running smooth since.

Mines fine, but there is a noticeable decrease in certain areas of the ship. I have the absolute latest drivers GTX 295, and when I turn off shadows, HUGE performance increase. Everything is 60+ with them off. Average is probably 60 with them on but it dips to 20-30 in the sub command room.

games NEVER update drivers. Games usually runs the directx updater or other needed software like visual runtimes. But never drivers.

I find also strange....

I have full shadows on my GTX260 and no Problems...Run on a Quadcore...

Driver GTX is 8.17.11.9621

Maybe have no problems because Win 7 64bit?

AMD X2 7750, 2gb ram, Radeon HD 4850. All details maxed to full, no performance problems on SH5.

....really strange. Running a Q9550@3,4GHZ, 8GB RAM and a Zotac GTX260 AMP on W7 64bit the frames drop dramatically inside the boat and I noted mouse lags. As soon as I disable the shadows everything is smooth. :hmmm:

GTS 250 (1GB Onboard) here.

Using a dual core AMD 4800+. 32-bit XP.

No problems here, though i did turn the shadows down 1 notch because i couldn't tell much difference between the two.

Mine is fine, nvidia 260GTX

One good point, install at least a program to look at the
gpu temperature.

I had already installed Rivatuner and use these settings,

But the shadows are SOOO pretty!

Outside the ship basically fire, also pretty, is about all that causes frame rate loss for me (Win7 64bit, GTX260) but inside is totally swimmy and difficult to move. I'm pretty sure it's AA, but without AA outside looks like crap and I can't see the horizon or distant ships worth a damn.

There is some kind of config problem.

I have a QX9770 (3.2 ghz Quad Core) and GTX 295, I should not have problems with shadows, yet I do. This is some kind of system dependent bug.

I know this isn't a solution but shutting the hatches behind you while you move through the sub, doubles the FPS I get in that compartment..
overclocked my gpu using evga precision (Win7/64), and turned off shadows, not it's pretty good indoors and outdoors..

Actually SHV DOES ask you to update your video drivers when it checks your system specs. It doesn't do it for you, but does request you do it.

It ask me to update the drivers before it would install.

It ONLY CHECKS your current drivers. It DOES NOT install any drivers.
