View Full Version : What a Strange Feeling (It Was)

Think of this as sort of what you might hear if you went to an AA meeting. It might help some of you who want to be true to your principles but find it difficult to resist the urges of temptation.
Hi everyone. I had to go to Best Buy today to pick up a new power strip for my computer workstation. While I was there I visited the software section and there on the shelf was a copy of Silent Hunter 5 and Bioshock 2; both of which use the new "constant internet connection" DRM. I picked both of them up and looked at the boxes and then returned them to the shelf. I paid for the power strip and left the store.
It felt so strange not buying the two games. But I will not support this DRM crap. I bet Far Cry 3 will have it too and I won't buy that either as incredible as Far Cry 2 has been for me. So stick to your guns people and vote with your wallet. This is the only voice you have and only one opportunity to make it count. Once you cross the line it's lost forever.

Well congrats Scrapser for you moral fortitude and everything, but I seriously hope we're not going to get one of these threads everytime someone 'sees the game, but doesn't buy it' because the forum is being churned a lot with threads, without this type of thread becoming a mainstay. We don't want to know when people don't do anything. That's not reporting news that didn't happen.

Will your wife/gf/significant other be going back to the store later though? :hmmm:

Frankly, we don't really need new threads when people decide to cave and buy the game. It's basically the same thing, unless they review it properly.

No it's not. Posting you did something is completely different to posting you didn't do something. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. I didn't eat my own spleen just now. See how utterly boring it gets really quickly?

A quick update: I still haven't eaten my own spleen and don't plan on doing so in the near future.

I suppose some people might find the "Well...my GF bought the game for me...and...uh, yeah, it's awesomeness!" threads entertaining and useful in some way (no idea how), but personally I'd rather watch paint dry. It's just as boring, and just as pointless, unless they are going to give us some useful information regarding the game itself.

Oh Damn, it turns out that my wife, or husband, or girlfriend, or boyfriend thought that I really wanted to eat my own spleen, despite living with me and knowing how much I was publically against eating my own spleen, but in such a way that I would remain blameless for doing it, so they (whoever it was) decided to remove my own spleen and cook it and serve it up to me as a gift card / birthday present / belated Christmas present to save my bluches.
But now, for a quick review of my experience of eating my own spleen. Overall I found the spleem quite juicy, but filled with bile. The bile reminded me of those posts I had read from people who had sworn not to buy the game or play the game in anyway and who had panned the game as being awful without actually playing it.
That's a special kind of bile, ladies and gentleman, to hate something so much that you can hate it without actually owning and playing it, just to go off your own frothing and gibbering interpretation of what other people have experienced. Why sane individuals would choose to live a life of frustratuion vicariously through others' bad reviews, I have no idea. I can only conclude that they are not sane.

unless they are going to give us some useful information
Ah, but of course it makes sense. By 'useful information' you mean 'useful ammunition'. Your stance is at once clear, you only require proof of a bug for it to be a 'worthwhile' review. Actually, from what I have read, not even proof, just a hint of an error is enough to say 'this game is full of bugs'. It's amazing the amount of bugs there are in a game where you don't have to understand how it works. I myself find the bug of 'no instadeath to convoy smart bomb lolcat roflcopter device' particularly annoying. When will Ubisoft learn that you can't have a decent subsim without even the most basic instadeath to convoy smart bomb lolcat roflcopter device :nope:. Stupid idiots that they are - spending all that time understanding the code whilst we, the unitiated people who don't know anything about the code come in and decide for people that such and such is bugged, because we don't understand the scout planes don't have weapons. lol factor 9.

Actually, Nisgeis, I am talking to you. No need for that type of mockery. It is only going to result in problems, okay?

Glad I came to the forums to read up on the game prior to making a purchase... I really do need to go out and start reading up on this new version of DRM. Sounds horrible.

Well it was fun coming back to this after posting it and letting some time pass. For the record, it really did feel weird not buying the games as I usually buy them on the first day of release. I remember the good old days in the late 80's/early 90's when there were easily 4 or 5 new games coming out each month.
But I digress. I thought it might help for someone who wants to hold off but is tempted. On the other hand I can see how this gets old quick so I'm glad a few of you at least had some fun with it.
And no, I have nobody to buy it in proxy to answer your question.
Right now I'm still getting over the fact that from all indications Silent Hunter 5 is actually Silent Hunter 3 with a face lift. This blows me away. If it's true, I would have expected a lot more "good" things being reported instead of all the disappointments.

It doesn't matter how many reviews you read, it won't give you an understanding of what it's actually like to play the game. My perception of what it would be like from all the US and Canadian reviews was completely different to my own playing experience. You can read about the auto TDC numbers, but unless you've tried it, you won't really be able to form an opinion of whether you like it or not. The same can be said for issuing commands, it's completely not like SH3 or SH4, so unless you've tried it, you won't be able to know whether you like it or not. SH3 version 2 it is not. But it is something completely different, which you may, or may not enjoy. The only way to be sure, is to take the plunge.

SH5 is going to be the best sub game ever created at some point in the near future.
but.. the staunch anti-DRM crowd have nothing left to discuss but to keep announcing how proud they are they will never play it.
Perhaps they should leave the SH5 boards and get their own forum so they are in like company.. they have no intention of ever playing the game anyway right?
Might be a boring forum though since the only sticky would be: "Who is more resolute in not buying a game and boasting about it?"
Go away.

I think you're right Redcoat22, SH5 certainly does have the potential to be the best yet. There are a few who still want to bash the game and let's be honest when something is new, then it's cool to bash the new things, so we don't appear conformist and therefore cool. But those who have become the 'early haters' are in a bit of a precarious position, as the initially cool hater position has somewhat given way to the steady flow of posts saying that people are enjoying the game. Its not wrong to change your mind, only a sensible person can change their mind. It's a normal part of being a human :DL.

I want to play SH5, but the implications of OSP and my feelings against it prevent me from being able to play SH5. Trust me, if I had my druthers, I druther be playing SH5 :D
Go away. When Neal tells me to hit the road, so be it. 'Til then, my voice counts just as much as yours.

I feel your pain. I will eventually get SH5 but that will depend on how long it takes to reach the bargain bins. By then the DRM will have been removed as Ubisoft will no longer care about losing profits. By then it will likely have been modded into something more like SH3.2 (I hope). I doubt this new 3D interior, interactive, subby, thingy with Star Trek controls and trying the cook's soup is going to catch on and revitalize the sub sim genre.
If anything it may make the original SH3 code more available to the modders and for that it deserves merit.
It's also entirely possible another version of Silent Hunter will be released whereby this whole cycle may start all over again. It depends on Ubisoft and the success of their DRM self-flagellation software.
