Ok, so some of us have been playing for a few days and now it's time to talk about Standard Operating Procedures.
Some of our younger Captains may not be aware of what their duties are, what tactics they should employ for attacking convoys, some may even be unsure where they should be standing while on watch! You are standing watch aren't you? Good!
Also, since we may now roam the ship at will, I'm sure the burning question in everyone's mind is "What is the crew doing back there and should I go check it out"
The answer to that one is, well, if they are laughing and dancing and carrying on like a bunch of frat boys at an all night kegger, don't bother them! You'll likely find that they are doing something incredibly stupid that puts the boat in imminent danger of exploding or sinking, or exploding then sinking, and you'll undoubtedly have to put a stop to it which makes you the bad guy! Far better to ignore it and let them have their fun and risk losing the ship. After all, you'll probably all die in this stinking tin can anyways, and isn't it better for the crew to die happy than at the hands of some meddlesome Brittan?
On the other hand, if your crew is frequently very quiet and stops talking when you enter the room, then you've obviously achieved a deep respect from them and they must be planning a surprise birthday party for you! You should talk to them frequently and drop hints about what kinds of cake you like. What? It's not your birthday? hrm....that is odd...
ok! On to SOP!
1. Watch SOP
While on watch you are expected to remain vigilant or at least awake at all times that someone can see you. Being the Captain, there is no set place for you to stand, but try to stand somewhere where you are not touching another crew member. Too much touching of a crew member can be easily misunderstood and may result in unplanned birthday parties!
2. Deck Watch SOP
As with number 1 above, there is no set place for you stand watch and you may freely roam the deck. Please bear in mind that you are much more highly trained that the rest of the crew and it is your duty to actually spot small contacts such as boats, ships and land. Try to train the other crewmen on watch by correcting them in a calm and even tone when they point crazily at the sun and yell "Ship spotted!"
3. Hydrophone Watch SOP
Now, see, I would have thought you could roam freely during hydrophone watch also, but it turns out the headphone has got to be connected in order for it to work. It's not an iPod, whatever that is. It also helps to have the boat submerged as this will give you something to actually listen to other than the wind.
If you happen to hear two whales mating, be sure to patch it through the boats intercom, as this is the closest the crew will get to porn for a long long time.
4. Radar Watch
Ah! Radar! Wave of the future! Our children's children will be able to use radar to rapidly heat expired sauerkraut sandwiches bought at greasy gas stations and vaporize the enemy in huge space battles fought on the moon! For now, it merely gives the British something to detect so they will feel they are doing well. Point away from face.
That is it for now. Keep these SOPs in mind and you will have a very efficiently run boat!
