New to SHIII and overwhelmed by the mods

So Ive always been a fan of naval games, played navyfield, pacific storm, and others back in the days of the great janes sims. Finanlly discovered the SH series on steam. I wanted put on the suggested mods. I downloaded the GWX files, but am alittle confused.

On their support website it says you need patch 1.4b When i click the link to go to the patch site they only have up to 1.3. also It wouldnt let me install that patch. how do I succesfully install these patches and mods?

Your game may already be patched to 1.4. There is a long standing typo which refers to 1.3 when it should actually say 1.4.

If you have d/l the exe and bin files, simply put them all into the same folder and click on the exe and point it to where steam has stored your game.

I don't use steam for GWX personally but in my installation (XP Pro) the default location is C\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\GWX3.0

This is the UK/MIDDLE EAST/ASIA patch be sure to switch the site to the US one if you use the US version.

If your useing steam it "should" already be patched up to the latest build.

You are in for a real treat with GWX..

one more suggestion:
SH3Commander can be found in the download-section of the board. it adds convenience to your career and/or crew-management.
be sure to download the config-file for GWX as well.

Kinda confused. allot of the sound files said they were corrupt for the install for GWX. Also How do I put sub commmander on with the gwx.

I had a hard time finding the 1.4b patch also. I did not find it on the ubisoft site. Instead, I googled for it.

I would recommend only installing GWX3.0 for starters. It has lots of mods you can install by running JSGME (in the SHIII directory).

I love the open hatch and enhanced damage mods.

Okay I found the patch but it every time i try to run it it gives me some data/campaigns/campaign/campaign_lnd.mis is unknown version.

also when I try to install GWX. It will get a pretty far and be trying to extract the sound files I think and it gives an error. wont work.

patch game 1.0 to 1.4

..that is the order how to do it...

What I have done up to now is :

1. Install SH3 (I use XP sp3, came back from Vista because of too many problems with too many games)

2. My game is already patched to 1.4b and without copy protection
(if you cant pass this stage, tell us what files are a problem perhaps
I can upload the few files somewhere so you can apply patch 1.4b
properly)

3. I install GWX 3.0 Gold
Got if from www.thegreywolves.com

4. I copy SH3 Commander inside the game folder.
I use version SH3Cmdr32.exe (version 3.2.0.203)

5. Then I use a patch called "GWX3.0 SH3 Cmd3.2 config files v1.2 installer" which is available from Subsim and it installs the required files so GWX3 will work fine with SH3 Commander.

This is the easiest : no files to move manually or nothing. You launch that program, it does what is required. That's it. Now SH3 commander will work fine with GWX 3.0 installed !

6. Then, I copy the files :
- d3d9.cfg
- d3d9.dll
- SHIII.sdb
- SP2 Rez fix uninstall.bat
- SP2 Rez fix.bat
from the archive "SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b.zip"
into my SH3 Program Files folder.
I use the .bat

7. Launch the game. Create a career, do one or two training
missions. Quit.

8. Now, in order to play in 1280 x 1024 instead of 1024x768 I now go into :
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\SH3\data\cfg
and I edit the file called main.cfg
in the part called [VIDEO]
I change the line "Resolution" to :
Resolution=1280 x 1024
Save. Now the game runs at 1280 x 1024 instead of 1024x768
(I use two screens of 1280 x 1024)

In SH3 commander, I only do small tweaks. Some changes just make my SH3 to crash as soon it loads so all I change is :

- skip intro movies
- simulate crew transfers
- use GW/GWX 8 Hour fatigue model
- Wave height : seasonal

The random crush depth makes my game crash so I don't use it.

Then I added a few radio mods. I downloaded plenty radio tunes
in MP3 format and I sorted them in MONTH/YEAR folders. Before I play I just move into the gramophone the files according to the month of war I am in so I can listen to radio at the good month of the good year (I do that manually, works fine enough)

I use JSGME from the SH3 folder to activate some GWX mods,
and I added the NewUZO mod at the end (NeuUZO_PeriV.2.zip) to have a simpler and nicer UZO/Periscope views.

Install a clean copy of SH3, then GWX. Then install SH3 Commander, use the patch I gave the link to. Tell me if you have a file or few files that are a problem for applying patch and I probably can upload you the good files somewhere so the patch does apply properly.

I'm also having problems with mods. I used Steam to download SHIII and as far as I know I'm patched to 1.4 but when I try to install GWX mod it says it detects a mod in my SHIII folder and I should reinstall a clean install. But it is a clean install.... sigh..

I thought I'd say Hi as well. I literally just purchased SHIII about an hour ago from direct2drive. I look forward to meeting you all. I know absolutely nothing about naval combat having been with flight sims for years....and just returning back to those after about 6 years. I figured I want to try something that is different and will let me command a vessel.

I have SH3 and SH4.
I prefer SH3 to play submarines, more fun.

I started with SH2 and going from SH2 to SH3 was incredible,
because instead of 2D screens I was getting 3D crews around
me, that got frightened and such under attack :)

I suggest you install SH3 then patch 1.4b
Then GWX and SH3 Commander. It's a must have.
SH3 commander adds crew transfers, you can change the fatigue
model for the GWX 8h one (far better than the base one from
the game) and seasonal waves (bad weather in winter really becomes
bad especially inside the sub when roking around in a type II !)

Thanx for the welcome. I've downloaded the GWX3 files and the Sub Commander files. Now to go through and get started installing and doing the tutorials. I checked it out just a bit last night. Wow it was pretty neat sitting in the conning tower and being on the ocean. I think this will be much more fun than I realized.

Also How do I put sub commmander on with the gwx.
SH3 Commander is its own program and installs itself to the Program Files folder. It works outside of the game and lets you control things.
