View Full Version : Help me get back in SHIII
Hi all, with the recent release of SH5, I regained interest in the sub sim genre, having been an avid fan of SHIII back when it came out.
I probably played a hundred of hours, I even managed to figure out full manual targeting and played with 100% realism etc, now though I've forgotten almost everything.
I remember having numerous mods installed, even some bad-ass measurement tools which included patterns and overlaid figures to help with calculations and stuff. I also had lots of gramophone music to the likes of lili marleen etc (which is one of my favorite songs ever).
I am severely disappointed with SH5 and will wait at least 6 months to buy it(if it's fixed enough) so I thought to install SH3 again meanwhile.
My question is, what are the best mods/tweaks available now? I have long forgotten everything I used.
I am installing GWX 3.0 but I want to know what else is there, also how do those campaign generators work? Are they not too much hassle?
Thanks in advance!
GWX 3.0 has about every bell and whistle you'd be looking for.
If you never had the opportunity to play GWX it makes SH3 a whole new game. So you've got plenty of replay value left.
Funny you mention it, I just started a new career in SH3 a couple nights ago. Ahhh... feels good to be back hunting in the Atlantic.

Hi kabex, welcome aboard! :salute:
There are so many great mods available for so many aspects of the game that it really comes down to individual preference.
When you get GWX installed you will no doubt find that it already comes with a number of great mods for you to experiment with.
The best place to start for additional mods is probably here
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=cat&id=1
in Subsim's SH3 Downloads section. You may even find as you browse that some of the names ring a bell, and find mods that you remember using and liking before.
There's also a forum specifically for mods here
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=195
where new releases are announced as well as works in progress, plus many mods have existing threads that you can check out for info or to ask questions of the modders themselves or others who've used them before you.
If you are going to be using mods the best advice I can give is to download and install JSGME, a mod enabler that will let you install and uninstall most mods to your game folder without the need to go in and manually overwrite or add files to the various game directories involved. You'll find that program in the Downloads section.
Also a nice addition is SH3 Commander, which lets you manage a lot of game/crew/career options and launch the game from its own interface with your preferences already in place. It's also available from the Downloads section and has a dedicated thread in the Mods Workshop forum.
If you find you have questions about specific mods you'd like to use, just post them and I know folks will do their best to help you out with the info you need.
Happy Hunting!
Thanks for the quick response, I am going start playing with GWX right away and take it from there, see if I need any more tweaks and start searching for them. If I run into any trouble I'll make sure to post here!
Anyway, I am assuming it's going be nigh impossible for me to start with 100% realism, so I am asking for good tutorials on how to do manual targeting and all that... I remember watching many videos on youtube and reading dozens of pages of tutorials and pdf's in order to manage 100% realism years ago.

I just posted a quick 4-5 step primer on Fast-90 for a guy in the SH5 forum based on my SH3 experience. Probably a good enough memory jogger for ya. :salute:

GWX 3 doesn't have the map tools I was using before.
Basically if you clicked the measurement tools it would bring up fancy radial tools and stuff to help with calculations, anyone know what I'm talking about?

Nevermind, I found exactly what I am looking for, it's called OLC's GUI, haven't found it yet but I found the video tutorials and this thing is pure AWESOME.
I am watching it in order to get the hang of it, I looked for it quickly but couldn't find it, I'll do a more thorough search after I have comprehended it fully.
Thanks.

Some of my favorites that I can't live without:
SH3Commander is always a must have! I also highly recommend PT's Sound pack - it adds ALOT to the immersion  Racerboy's flags look fantastic as well and his SH4 Effects will blow your mind. Rubini's Exhaust/Waterstream CombiMOD just looks cool. :D And I'm pretty sure they're all available in the DL section...

Hi Kabex,
Since you're running the GWX (the best mod if you ask me) I would advice you to give the "GWX 3 - Rafael DSK GUI" a try:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1380
Looks good and works with GWX.
Though it takes a while getting used to the pop up dials in scope view you'll find all the tools you are missing.
Besides - I'm not sure if the OLC GUI works flawless with the GWX.
As for sound packs - I like the Thomsen's Sound Pack.
Hope you'll like these ones. I do.
Here's a list of the mods i use

Go sink 'em!
These are all great suggestions, hate to ask more of you but could you also provide links because it's a mess finding stuff in here.
Anyway, I installed OLC and it works perfectly, it's an awesome tool IMO.
Don't know if there are better ones out there for manual targeting (determining angle on bow, target course, distance to target and target speed specifically).

Really?
I thought the download section was pretty well organized and searchable.

Yes but I'm pretending he's been on extended shore leave and just got back on the boat.
:O:
I should probably let Cookie actually bake the cake mix before I eat it, I understand that burns off some of the alchohol content.
