I uninstalled it reinstalled it and the upgradelauncher won't work. I keep getting a MFC71.DLL was not found.

Latest patch is v1.4, and after that there is U-Boat missions add-on which bringd the game to version 1.5.

That's what I used, the D2D download since after buying SHIV from D2D it was 1.0 - but the ubisoft site has the patches up to 1.4, then most mods here need 1.5 (add-on). Sometimes you just paddle through :arrgh!:

I went through the sub school, and I'm just puttering around outside Pearl learning the boat. Now going through the manual because there are key changes compared to III in how this game handles the crew, d/c, etc. At first I didn't know the early radar is automatic, jazz like that.

Be carefull about patches from other than suppliers. UB ok but when I rebooted computor i did not run a defrg and it did'nt load SH4 Gold could not use switches. Uninstaled and reloaded then ok. Lates patch 1.4. If anyone has a problem sometimes you will need to remove Gameshadow for vista. Game runs faster after defrg.

is it ok to install uboat missions over an unpatched sh4 or do all the patches need to be installed first?

u boat missions is a cumulative patch, so just install it and you should be good to go :up:
