Just received my "Limited edition" SH5 from Amazon UK including the official guide which turned out to be a very nice full colour hardback notepad size recognition book, unfortunatey they have chose have the illustrations of the ships in a portrail orientation spread across the two pages, result where ships have funnels/features amidships the funnels/features are not visable due to the spine of the book, another silly decision.

I just received mine too.
It's actually quite a nice CE and the box is good quality.
Unfortunately I am off work today and I have promised to take my 3year old son on a trip on the trains as he is thomas the tank engine on the brain.
So SH5 will have to wait until later.

I have the collectors edition and it came with both the hardback book and a PDF :)
I also made a pdf of the huge map that was in to.

Hi guys,

Mine has literally just arrived. Collector's edition from Amazon UK.

The hardback book is a nice touch, shame I can't play it now. I have to leave in about 30-minutes as I'm away for the weekend...

Oh well, Monday will come around soon enough!

Interesting to hear what's actually included - thanks! The recognition manual sounds good, in spite of the book spine problems.

It makes the waiting a little easier. Amazon only posted my copy late on Fri 5th, despite my pre-order being made some weeks back. Pretty disappointing really - might write them a note! Not like their normal excellent service.

Maybe I can borrow Phoenix's copy for the weekend? ;)

Depends on where you get it. There is a bonus DVD, but this is a Documentary in some places and the game's music score from others (that's what I got).
This is the Collector's Edition I got in Australia:

Herodotus: Was the official guide a Hardcover recognition manual, as per what the Brits got?

Yes, same image on Amazon UK, so it should be the same as in Australia.

I find all the CE variants a bit confusing and unnecessary, though!

looks like a paperback pamphlet in the image, hence wanting confirmation.

was going to order it from amazon uk myself as its 1/2 the australian price (just returned from 6 years in wolves), but they wont ship it to oz dammit.

I'm going to order a copy of SH5. I'd like to get the collector's edition, but it appears to only be available in the UK. Could someone tell me if it is region locked, or would I be able to run it on my US machine?

Thanks

@ Seamanstaines

LOL nice name..... reminds me of the Captain Pugwash Myths

Roger The Cabin Boy

Not a request or order!

http://static.squidoo.com/resize/squidoo_images/250/draft_lens1564492module4116779photo_pugwash_tom.jp gFun and inventive it may have been, the Cabin Boys Name was Tom, he was the most heroic member of the crew, yet rarely was he allowed to take the credit for being the hero of the hour.
Master Bates

http://static.squidoo.com/resize/squidoo_images/250/draft_lens1564492module4116780photo_pug2.gifNot actually the name of the Black Pig's Master, though of all the characters his real name was close and could easily be twisted from the actual Master Mate.

Seaman Staines

http://static.squidoo.com/resize/squidoo_images/250/draft_lens1564492module4116781photo_pug_willy.gifA gain another smutty suggested name, though no one would actually be able to tell you which of the 2 remaining crew members this referred to, so I'm guessing this was Willy, mainly due to his shirt pattern!http://www.squidoo.com/captain_pugwash

No, it is a hardcover book (I think the image shows an early rendering).
The game manual is of course soft cover, and is not shown in the picture (nor is the metal case it all comes in).
I was disappointed with the map, though as it is not as clear nor well presented as the map that came with the "SH4: CE".

well aint that something.

You gotta buy a freaking collector's edition to get a paper manual and a map?

I think US/Canada is the only country where this is so, probably due to the fact that SH4 sold so poorly (50 k units) there. Interesting that almost twice as many Americans bought a U-boat sim than a game about their own boats.

Could someone scan a page from the book to let those of who don't have the CE see what we are missing? UBI might have sold me a CE IF they had bothered to post a sample of the content, but no, that would never occur to them I guess.

I'm sure the problem with it is obvious to all but the UBi marketing guys eyes! Not sure how many countries are getting the printed version I know it's only PDF in the States/Canada thankfully I live in the UK where we are still deigned worthy of printed matter however flawed!

Thankfully the UK version also includes the PDF so you can get the whole picture there.

In case you haven't got DarkWraith's SH4-style UI mod, I highly recommend it, here's the link:

Thanks for that, some great mods coming our way, especially since the devs are helping explain the new in-depth tools to our talented modders, hopefully a bright future for SH5.

This sounds like a nice touch. :yeah:

Tangible things like this will sway "fence-sitters" into buying instead of stealing. I'd like to see more things like this in the future... maybe an Is/Was calculator, an AOB calculator, and a period-specific map of the area showing shipping lanes, etc. Maybe a hard-copy of the U-Boat Submarine Commander's Handbook (http://www.hnsa.org/doc/uboat/index.htm), revised to highlight the parts that would be particularly useful in-game.

Those things would probably only cost pennies each to mass-produce but make the retail version much more desirable to people with questionable morals.

The Uk edition (a printed hardback) of the "official manual" has 112 pages
pages 2-3 Historical context
pages 9-13 crew bios
pages 14-15 pics of crew members
pages 16-25 pics of playable U-boat with short desciptive texts
pages 26-99 ship recognition stuff
pages 100-109 arnaments, pics of guns + short descriptive text
pages 110-111 pics of torpedoes in game

I'm not sure if PDF comes with non collectors version.

Same with the Australian guide.
The interesting thing is that German ships have the German Swastika on display yet it has been removed from the game. Gaigin did this with "Wings of Prey" then enabled it in a patch (via Yuplay) for those countries permitted to display it.
In any case there is now a Mod to do this.
