View Full Version : Another Auto aim question ? Long distance shots impossible?

Ok.
Night surface attack of a convoy with ring of DD's around it.
Usually I stay far enough away as not to be seen, but with the nw auto aim stuf, I have to be within 1800 meters inorder to guess where my torps will hit.
Is there any to pull of these shots or is it going to be a crap shoot from now on. Or do I just submerge all the time and lay in wait for the DD's to be all around when I fire.
Oh, I'm in the channel so a dive to hide isn't enough.

and on a side note,
has anyone been attacked by aircraft yet ? I seem to be invisible to them, thank God, my AA crew seems to be blind.
ha ha, blind. My navigator wears glasses, my #2 has an eyepatch, my deck watch doesn't use binoculars, my WO is always on the UZO, but never moves it....so what else to I get ? Deaf sonar guy ? One armed torpedo loader ?

can't help you with the first part, i don't use the Auto targetting.

As for the airplanes, i haven't been attacked yet.. but even stranger is that 90% of the planes that buzz me are at night-time LOL.

Yeah, I only played with auto in MP, but I did find it strange that the numbers go up to 3. Basically, outside of medium range, you're out of luck as far as cues - just make your best guess, I suppose. Granted, it's a fair compromise and for most situations where it's advisable to shoot torpedoes, you will be that close anyway.

And nope... so far the planes are blind. Might be an early war thing.

Yeah, manual targeting may be the way to go. I thought being a new game and all, I'd take the easy way out to begin with.
I feel sorry for the " wider group of casual gamers " this was supposed to attract.

Planes buzz me durring the day, low enough to make me run down the hole, but they never shoot, or swing back around for a run. :nope:

BUT any way, I tired to measure the distance between the numbers on my tops line and do a formula relative to the distance between the same dots on the ships line. If this = this, then this should = this, it didn't work. So I guess it's gonna be an up close and personal fight. Why take steam torpedos then, if you have to be within 2000 meters ? God I hate this....:damn:

If the number of planes buzzing me in the early war period while I'm trying to complete the mission off the east coast of Britain continues as-is but the game is patched so they all attacked me instead of ignoring me, I'd sure be dead, the way I'm playing now (staying on the surface during the day).

Either there are too many patrols for early war period (possibly the developers are accounting for the state of things early-war is by making the planes "act" blind and later in the war they will open up their eyes) or my expectations are wrong and I just need to stay underwater during the day while that close to the coast even in early 1940.

Planes are broken. It totally destroys your sense of belief when you see a plane lazily buzz by at 5000 meters and doesn't react at all to your presence.
