View Full Version : SH5 Unfinished - I'll wait for a GWX type mod to fix it

I cannot fathom what the Dev's were thinking when they built SH5. All of the useful information and abilites were not just hidden but in many cases removed outright - And we're talking about features that were in SH3 and SH4 that they knew the community highly valued.
No ability to get depth under keel, no compass and rudder settings, no battery and fuel levels, no ability to change directions while keeping your original course settings laid in, no advanced torpedo settings, and the list goes on. Oh yes, and let's not forget bugs galore as pointed out in the SH5 bug thread. While I could understand them wanting to perhaps hide them in advanced menus to make it more 'consolely', the fact they are missing altogether is bewildering.
I sincerely hope that the GWX team or other modders will rise to the occasion and make this a playable game.
As for myself - I feel truly let down by the SH dev team because these decisions clearly indicate that they do not listen or see what the mod community does as a way to infer the highly desired and enjoyable features of the Silent Hunter series. I feel betrayed, misunderstood, and I can only assume they knowingly did so.
I am hearby uninstalling SH5 and going back to SH3/GWX and SH4 that have been made true gems of games. I'll check back on SH5 Mod progress in a year or so and see how things are shaping up.

I agree with your assessment.
But you're going to be waiting a very, very long time. That's how messed-up the game currently is.
Agreed. It is a bit of a stunted game at the moment.
If you are waiting for a GWX or TMO, prepare to wait a long time
On the other hand, let's not get too skeptical on that either. Both SHIII and SHIV had major holes plugged within a couple of weeks of release. Test versions of fairly major mods would pop up by late april; May saw the release of final (vanilla) patches and the first playable versions of 'realism mega-mods' usually came around June-July. :hmmm:

They have no choice but to fix this game.. Or they can hang up the SH series starting today.
The game has lots of issues. And it needs to be fixed. And from what I heard so far from some of the modders.. They are not touching this until they get some things worked out in patches.
This game needs lots of work. LOTS.

The best course of action for any Mega-Modders would be to wait and see what the first few patches do.
No point in spending time trying to fix or bring something back into the game that the devs may already be working on.
The devs work on features? What fantasy land are you living in? All they are interested in doing is tossing together some eye candy and making a few pretty teaser movies knowing they can win over us suckers with empty promises and release a game not 1/4 finished with what it should be. Knowing the mod community will come to their rescue and take the aborted fetus of a game they have turned out and give it life.
Sorry, I waxed cynical. I'm sure it will all be ok in the end.

Well, after purchasing SH5, I feel like I just had an expensive date with a beautiful, shallow blond babe. She was pretty to look at, but the conversations went nowhere. And I didn't even get laid!
I feel dirty and ripped-off at the same time. :88)

blame the ubi suits for rushing the devs and not giving them enough time.

Yep, good point CCIP.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a day one patch.

yeah, we had a day 1 patch. That didn't quite do it...
But it was same with SHIII. 1.1 in SHIII actually pretty much just fixed one graphics glitch (with the UZO); 1.2 came down fairly soon afterward and actually made some obvious changes.

Yeah, I just tried another 90 minutes of the game after about 2 hours last night and I give up. It really is an unfinished piece of work that looks like it was just slapped together with clearly no consideration to the mods and popular game mechanics in SHIII and IV that made those games great.
After recently playing two other sequels that were absolutely rock solid - Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2, this is a complete embarrassment for Ubisoft.
I'm going to uninstall the game for now to free up hard drive space and check back in about six months.
Major disappointment - I was expecting this game to be one of my gaming highlights of 2010.
Good luck to the mods! They're going to need it.... :yeah:

I come into extremely limited ammounts of money these days, i spent the better part of it to buy this game that will most likey be shelved for a few weeks/months before it can be considered to me as in a playable state, so i totally agree with you guys. Really tired of buying games in beta stage of development. :damn:

Yeah, I got the patch.
I consider it to be a pre day one patch.
I figured on the actual release date, we may get another.
That's what I meant by a day one patch.
Mind you, I could be wrong. It has happened before :DL

Our modders here are pretty sharp.
All their mods are jsgme. So if any future patches conflict out they can come easy.
As has been pointed out, the big mods probably won't surface until final patching is done.
CCIP ... Again saved the day as he did with SH4 with a keymap mod. :salute:
Now other modders are doing the same. :salute:
Just a reminder from someone who was here since before GWX. Initially, all supermods (GWX, NYGM, WAC, TMO, Monsun, you name it) started like a bunch of simple mods, made by various subsimmers, that were put together and made to work with one another. And those who knew how to bring them into the game themselves improved a lot their gameplay experience, long before the advent of supermods.
My advice, to all those who are waiting for a supermod before giving the game a chance:
Start checking the mods that already appeared for SH5 and those that are in the works, try to find what suits you best, and start building your own "supermod." Otherwise, you're up for a long wait.:shucks:
Yes, but also it's way, way too early to seriously commit to modding this game. I think we need to see some real work on the game's hard-code issues before it'd be fair to expect modders to really start pulling heavy weight. See, for me, in order to justify spending the long hours it takes to tinker and test modifications, a game has to be both enjoyable and promising. It has to approach an experience I want, and push me towards working at building that experience. I hope and pray that SHV will get to that stage.
I personally will discourage people from taking up any but the most basic modding work on this right now, while the ball should firmly be in the development/patching team's court.
