View Full Version : Down the Throat

I set up for a night parallel submerged torpedo attack on a large convoy south of Truk. Had only one high value target in the middle - a large modern tanker. Had plenty of time to set up and nail a solution and I was waiting for the tanker to drive into the shot, and wouldn't you know the lead tin can somehow gets a whiff of me! Starts pinging! :o Now, it's kinda rough out - windy and noisy as all getout on the surface - I'm at all stop and under silent running :o. So, I raise the scope and swing it to the destroyer who's coming straight at me - zero AOB - at about 800 yards.
Now, I'm PO'd! :stare: I quickly input the bearing and approximate range into the TDC, the PK already running, and shifted to the attack map. The AOB was all wrong, as was the speed, but I spun that spread dial around and launched a spread of three ahead of the SOB. Got two hits and down he went. If newbies on the forum could post attachments, I'd add a screenshot of the DD being hit :03:.
Now, of course, the convoy's alerted to my presence. so, I used a tactic I learned on the Whale, dove down to 250 feet so my screws wouldn't cavitate, ran down that tanker at speed and popped up to periscope depth and made another snap shot from 450 yards with 3 and got my intended target anyway. Dove back down to 280 feet at ahead 2/3 and went on my way.
Perseverence pays, gentlemen.
Nice shot!

Lucky sod!
Last time I got a succesful down the throat was when I played SH1!
I've never managed it in SH2, 3 or 4!:wah:
Guess I'll have to start practicing!
Mike.

I love DTT shots. Just set speed to zero, bear to 0 or 180 from the stern, same with AOB, ..just straight shooting and pray for no duds. Only problem many of the DD's in TMO take 2-3 torps so gotta hit two.

Unfortunately, I can't run TMO - I can barely run the sim at all. I only have half a gig of RAM and I have all of the graphics options turned down to minimum. I am running RSRD (just added the patch) and a few other mods, but even then I have to keep this machine of mine squeaky clean to get usable frame rates. I run it in hard mode - difficulty level of 73 - and I'm having a ball being a boat driver.
BTW, just what do I have to do to be able to post attachments?

I have a single core Opteron AMD, dates 4.5 year back since I built this machine. At first I had a gig of RAM and couldn't run the game at all. Then I upgraded to 2 gigs and the game run just fine. But when I added additional gig of RAM the game now flies on full details. Even volumetric fog which was FPS killer for me while back.
Thus I would recommend you to upgrade your ram (DDR is very cheap nowadays). The easiest way to get the most out of your SH4. ;)
As for posting attachments, do you mean images? If so, just copy the image URL (address / link), and put it in the envelope (right next to the quote option) when posting. You should get something like this: *image URL (address / location)*. I hope this is what you meant. :)

Trying to add an image here (that DTT shot). Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain...

It worked!! Thanks!!
My machine has an oddball type of ram. If I can find it at all, it's $450 a gig (crying)...

I had a PC that requried some wierd ram like that. The PC was old. You're better off buying a new system when you can than waste that on ram.
Heck, look on Craig's list or some other site. Pages of used PC's. I bought a nice gaming rig for $200. Just check it out before you buy, but that's the way to go. It was an AMD 6000, duel core, had a 9600gt, that I upgraded and 4 gigs of ram, lot's of fans, good motherboard, nice 19in mon. My son uses it now, but pushes almost anything out there.

I'd love to do that. I am, however, trying to live on Social Security Disability Income only. I have fibromyalgia, chronic depression and PTSD :-?. I have hopes of something breaking loose later this year, and if it does, I'll be building a supercomputer.
Meanwhile, I plod on laying waste to those GD Nips. 280000 tons last patrol :D.

DTT shot is one of the more difficult(esp in TMO) but fun shots to accomplish. In stock I remember they would just run right at you in straight line, fire from 600 yards or so, pretty much assured youll hit an done torp took them down.Unfortunately TMO DD's have super bows for some reason so fire two fish usually and they usually do the trick.Although firing shot when they start zigging while coming at you instead of strait line can prove difficult at times but doable.
My favorite was I basically encountered what Wahoo did in Wewak Harbor in Jan 1943 which was the first successful DTT shot by US subs....lone DD patrol, I infiltrated submerged, fired at the DD and missed, it came at me, didnt zig like most in TMO did, fired when DD was at 550 yards and closing, then headed the short distance to bottom.BOOM i heard(external view disabled) came back to surface and raised scope, DD was on fire and sinking:haha:
Note:I placed a lone Shiratsu DD in Weawak Harbor via the ME, in case i ever wanted to try this in campaign when i was in the area.
