I admit occasionally I still like to play a decent team sport simulation, or sports in general. Every once in a while I reactivate my copy of Top Spin (1) despite some things that kill my nerves in it, and I would love to have a decent ice hockey simulation or basketball, the problem is for PC there are none. the only team sport that seems to get decent simulated representations, is football (soccer for our US fans).

There are two lineages. Pro Evolution Soccer by Konami, and FIFA by Electronic Arts.

I played one or two FIFA titles 8 or 10 years ago, plus the special WC edition for - 2002, I think. I also played PES 3, 4, 6, getting the titles for cheap money and second hand - after all, this genre is no priority gaming for me.

I always considered PES to be superior. It was more a simulation, while FIFA always seemed to be more a hectic arcade game. Sometimes the replays made me believe to watch a TV live coverage of real things going on.

However, there always were some things that kept me from staying with PES for a longer time. From the referees over bad goalie AI and harsh differences between difficulty levels, to certain characteristics of player handling, especially in defensive game situations.

It'S been a long time I tried my last PES match with version 6. However, I ordered a very cheap copy of PES 2009 now, for less than 5 Euros (that was the reason why I did). I read the game gets attacked for being "too slow". I assume that is exactly what I could like, I do not want a hectic arcade game, I want a reasonably paced simulation.

However, on German Amazon site, and others, I read that for the 2010 versions of both titles, many people seem to think that for the first time ever, FIFA has surpassed PES in it'S very own typical characteristics, making it the one football simulation that actually is better paced, more realistic and less action-orentied, than any earlier title. They say that FIFA 2010 has taken command of all the characteristics that in earlier years made PES the better football simulation, and that it has the better gameplay now.

Your opinions on this old debate PES-vs-FIFA ?

From what I understand, the latest FIFA titles have reclaimed superiority from PES.

Can't say from experience, but that seems the general consensus among the fans. :hmmm:

Two days with PES2009, and I love it. This is, finally, the team sports simulation that I wanted for years. Highly playable and accessible, complex in details, physics and realism, nice graphics, and finally, finally a playing speed and pace that matches reality and leaves me the opportunity to actually tactically think out my moves instead of just acting by reflxes. The AI also is very nice.

For those 4 Euros I payed, a steal. Best team sports sim I ever played in the past 15 years or so.

Servus Skybird,

I find PES superior in many ways. However, the version I find best is either Winning Eleven 9 (released for PS2, I'm not sure what PES version this is), or the Wii version of PES. Now, I know what you're thinking....Wii is only for kids right? Well, I don't think you'll find a better game of football than on the Wii. Check this video out to see how much control you have on the pitch:

As you can see, it is exactly the same simulation as the other PES/Winning Eleven series, but you use the Wiimote to drag your players around the pitch, making plays, passes, etc. Notice how he clicks on a player who doesn't have the ball, and drags him into open space? It takes a while to get used to, but it's so much fun. I find that this simulates the real game far better than any other version.

Not before yesterday I discovered the legend-mode, where you play one player only, your alter ego. This and the changed perspective, putting you low and pretty much right on the field, always looking at the opposite goal/ball, is completely new to me in the way it is implemented here, and makes a lot of fun. Very immersive.

Too bad that I cannot get any of the Bundesliga patches for PES 2009 PC anymore, all links for the two different patches there are, are dead. I'm just about the logos, names, and shirts.

I do not consider getting PES2010 which has licences for the German clubs, since it is faster again. But the slower pace of PES is exactly what I like. I alos read PC players bashing the 2010 version, but hailing the 2009 version, and 6 (which i also knew, but I like 2009 MUCH more, it has cured all objects of criticism I had with 6).

I have no console here, and I do not consider to get one again (I had a PS1 very long time ago). Interesting handling concept on the Wii, nevertheless. I wonder how it works witch dribblings 1-on-1.

PES has been going down, but having said that I still find myself preferring PES because their gameplay is simply still more realistic.I can't take FIFA seriously if they insist programming the ball on the invisible string. It's like they've never played the game before.
