View Full Version : Have you actually bought SH5

Just a simple question, have you currently got Sh5 or do you anticipate owning it within the next week or as soon as it becomes available?

Just curious...

Anyone who mentions anything else (Dee-Are-Emm or Oh-Ess-Pee) will be sodomised with a chain smoking monkey with his fur spiked with hair gel...

If you're 'just curious' about that, PM me.

At least in the near future. I'm sure eventually I will get it within a year or two.
Right now, besides all the pretty graphics, I haven't seen or heard anything that makes me want to run out and buy it.
Of course, once some real reviews roll in on gameplay, I may have a change of heart.

The Thing That Shall Not Be Named is not really an issue for me right now. I'm pretty much on the fence on that. I haven't heard of any magnets falling off the fridge because of it.

I had it pre-ordered the minute I was able to and even though the DRM sounded bad I stuck with it. It's installed at ready to go when I get out of class tonight. If I tolerated Starforce, (and I blame it for killing one of my drives) then I won't let this stop me from enjoying a Silent Hunter game.

Correct. I was one of them but now my shipment from amazon is underway. Hope I won't regret it but most of the statements here give me a very positive feeling about it. Game looks good and the bugs wich are describd by now are not as bad as they were in SH4/SH3. Expected a lot more of them an a lot worse. Just remember the "A"-Bug for example.
To bad I have to write an exam before I can start to play. ;) Well, Ziggy you're not alone. :D

You're entitled to your opinon, but my opinion is that SH3 looks very primative compared to this. SH5 is far more ambitious in scope, sure there are a few teething problems, there always are, but with a little help from the Modders it'll blow all other subsims out of the water. I predict in one year that nobody will be playing SH3 and it's forum will be closed by Neal.

I think it will be the same story in terms of bugs and patches as SHIII and SHIV, but this game is at least much more modable than previous versions.

My plan is to take a wait and see attitute with the DRM, and consider purchasing the game in October/November of this year. :)

Although I was almost swayed by the graphics I've decided to wait a while but that could change. Bugs aren't really the issue for me; I've bought plenty of games that have been bug ridden to the point of absurdity and still enjoyed them. My issue is more to with the fact I haven't read a review by someone whose view I respect that has been anything more than lukewarm at best, and that unfortunately chimes with a gut feeling about the game that I've had for a while. There are several design decisions that I disagree with quite strongly and I'm just not willing to pony up the cash for something I don't really fancy.

Secondly, and this one just dawned on me a few days ago, I would much rather a return to the Pacific than another title about U-boats. Nothing wrong with the Atlantic. it's just that my simming heart is in the PTO just now and U-boats don't grab me the way they used to. It'll be back to Imperial waters to continue the adventures of Commander J. Erasmus Troy and the crew of the USS Greenling. They've had a few tricky situations in the past and it just wouldn't be right to abandon them just now.

Hey you lot.

I'm going to get it, if only because I feel the immersion is there. I'll be happier once TDC's and rudder controls are modded in, and a more historical interface, but then I think I realise why the developers have gone for a basic look for the existing UI. They wanted to remove the impression of you pressing things and make it seem more like you were giving orders to your crew to carry out. It's a sub-capt. sim, not a 'be all the crew' sim.

Am I happy with this decision? Can't say I am, but then I'm not cross either when a fine array of modders waits in the wings to work on this baby. I'm very pleased that they've left it so open for modification and tinkering. Eventually we'll get something very beautiful out of this, I'm sure.

Up until then I don't mind so much what icons I'm clicking or keys I'm pressing, so long as I feel like I'm there. Consensus of those who own it seems to be - on average:

Utterly ravishing to look at.
Interface a little baffling but workable.
Doesn't let you take full control of some aspects as SH3 did.
AI good to great.
Bugs are there but not game crippling and fixable.
Certain specifics are a little sloppy - no oilskins for crew (grrr!) recon planes at night...
Intentionally different from SH3/4
Manual is a load of balls, as are the instructions.

I find the last negative particularly ironic as this is supposed to be a 'break-out' game to hook the non-sim player. Way to reel them in with a completely inadequate manual and downright wrong key listings. Heigh-ho.

Overall though this looks a very promising title and I'm itching to buy it. I only want to know four things:

1: Is there a gramophone/radio and can I drop in those old war radio files? That was half the immersion for me with GWX, listening to authentic war broadcasts. It'll be doubly excellent when a new SH5Commander comes out.

2: Does your sub have the full crew of 40-odd, or just the 27 or so I see in the videos? Does the game make you think that the others are just rotated off shift but still on boat, or is history revised for a smaller crew? I don't mind if for performance reasons they had to scale it back, but I would like a feeling of people in bunks to make up numbers and stuff.

3: Do crew get injured or die and are replaced by suspiciously similarly voiced fresh faced types, like that bit where Homer leaves the bar and reappears as Guy Incognito?

4: Do crew still get thrown about and stuff?

It'd be great if anyone could answer me those. Ta.

So... do I think that this title needed more development time? Yeah, sure. But it's always been the case with pretty much everyone except games by Valve and the Holy Civilization series. (Except Colonization 2, that was guff.) I can't get mad at Ubi for their copy protection decision either, though I think it's a bad call. I'm just happy that some big publisher is supporting the sim genre, which is facing hard times.

I aim on boycotting all Ubisoft products, except simulations. Maybe one day they will wake up and realise that we PC gamers are tired of draconian measures, excepting with regards to sims, in which case they are Stringer Bell and we are their Bubbles.

I like to sink into a game like I do a book - and SH5 looks to be one that'll immerse me deeply. Can't wait frankly for Friday, even though it means beans on toast until mid-month payday.

Agreed.
The manual is, as you have said, a load of balls.
And the manual is outstanding in that it manages to be even less informative than SH 3 or 4.
I feel that a non Subsim type player would be baffled by this game, the manual doesn't even seem to cater to them.

Downloading now via Steam, reading reviews and complaints...nothing much has changed since I loaded Silent Hunter I 'Commander's Edition" on my C64, complaints about bugs and poorly developed code.

If SH5 is similar to SH!, SH2, SH3 or SH4, for the price of dinner and a movie I'll get hundreds of hours of enjoyment. Thanks to the guys at Ubisoft and here (God Bless the Modders).

While I wish the game were perfect out of the box I understand the complexity of creating a sim and forgive fixable bugs. I don't believe DRM's are the antichrist and if it stops anyone from stealng the game I can live with that (I realize that it won't stop most people who want to steal it but it may slow down the lazy, incompetent thieves).

I'm looking forward to playing it and I'm sure I'll be playing it when SH6 comes out

There can be no 'on the fence option.

I voted "Yes", because...

1. Even although my opinion of Ubisoft as a company has plummeted to an all time low I do believe Dan is a man of his word and will do whatever possible to improve the game as he did post launch with SH4.

2. The devs have also seen fit to give us a much more powerful modding tool which will allow our modders to get deeper into the game than ever before, to sculpt it into the perfect subsim.

3. If there is to be an SH6 then we must support SH5 look at what has happened because not enough people bought SH4 the US edition of SH5 received no manual and a the program got a protracted development time.

I voted no. Was about to buy it, then saw the DRM requirements. I like games to play while travelling and having to be online makes that impossible.

Having read more of the reviews, I also think the tethering is intentional. The limited number of subs and limted war makes this look like it'll be a DLC game. Want more subs? Pay. Want to extend the war? Pay. So think I'll wait till a DRM-free 'gold' version of the full game gets released. I don't like the idea of renting games by installment. :damn:

No, I am not going to whinge over DRM. Only a few times has DRM ever given me hassle.

I simply wait for Ubi to iron out the most annoying bugs, and I think I will board my sub and patrol the Atlantic a

Yes, I know that sims are comples beasts and bl.a. bl.a. Sure, its okay with me. DRM no biggie either, shame it was broken so fast. Ill support SHV - As long as you don't mind me waiting on you getting around to fixing it. Deal? Deal.

It's been awhile since I was last here but I've "surfaced" for SH5. In the past I spent huge amounts of time on the ludicrously long bug list for SH4: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=526203&postcount=450.

I pre-ordered SH5 a few days ago. I expected bugs but I'm a bit concerned about how many there appear to be. I am absolutely certain that Dan (elanaiba) will do everything he can to get them patched but a lot will hinge on whether his bosses (Ubisoft HQ) will agree to pay for it.

I am, however, somewhat hopeful about the fact at least some of the bugs mentioned so far are fixable by modding. Most of the bugs in SH4 were hardcoded problems. As an example Dan himself mentioned in a recent post that the front end interface in SH5 is easlily moddable back to the SH4 style.

I didn't buy it because of the online DRM and because the compass had to be modded in.:timeout:

If the online DRM was removed, however, I'd buy it just to support the series, unfinished as the game may be.
