Just curious - I hear constant reports that nvidia cards are getting poor framerates inside the boat, while other people also note that it's the shadows that do it.

Could this be confirmed? Just wondering since I think that's an important issue to bring to the devs' attention if it indeed exists. I'm running it on an ATI 5770 and the frame rates are just fine, and oddly the interior is actually better than exterior as far as frame rates go, with or without the shadows.

I think this is clearly a bug and needs some attention, nothing a patch can't fix

What kind of video card do you have ?
14-17 fps is on medium/high quality ? , interior/exterior/bunker ?

Im getting about 20-25fps in the control room. That's the compartment that hogs down my card.

Everything maxed at 1680x1050, with full AA
With shadows -> Exterior: 40-60 fps, Interior: 10-15
Without -> Exterior 40-60 fps, Interior 30-130 ( really dependends on compartment)

Drivers tried: 191.07, 196.75

Other specs:
GeForce GTX260
Q9400
8 Gigs RAM
Auzentech Prelude
Win 7 x64.

Newest drivers shadows turnned down to half way.

Get a little laggy inside control room everyonce in awhile.

Outside is pefectly fine though. Seems to need to optimize the insides to me some more.

Yep, running everything at max, including AA, at 1280x960 but shadows disabled: smooth as silk.

Enable 1 notch on shadows: looks slow and jerky, control lag.

Seems like it's constanly rendering the whole sub interior as soon as you go down the hatch, instead of just rendering what is visible.

People asked for shadows, and they got 'm. But you need to turn them off for a playable experience. :rotfl2:

E8500, ATI 4890 (win xp, cat 9.12), 27" monitor, 1920x1200, max settings w. shadows but no AA, fps never dips below 40 either inside or on deck, even at the beginning of the Narvik mission.

8800gts 640 here, i tried the newest nvidia drivers last night but it really didnt seem to help...Im still getting the framerate jumping around 30-70 fps...Command room 10-20fps... Though I did notice one time I loaded the game up the studdering stopped but came back the next go around....:damn:

I just turned them off. I don't miss them. The lower frame rates weren't so bad as the stuttery mouse movement. Was making me feel a bit nauseous. Running 1920x1080. Got everything but shadows at max

One comment, the final game was a huge improvement over the preview in framerate. Optimization for the win.

I also noticed a wierd 'sticking' when looking at the middle of one of the torpedo racks in the bow compartment. No characters or shadows in view, just literally the texture. It's 100% reproducible and literally feels like the mouse is physically sticking to the pad.

AA slider half way.
Shadow slider half way.

In the CR it slows down to high teens low twenties.
Everywhere else high 20's, low 30's.

Smooth enough to play well.

AMD X2 4800
Nvidia 9800GT
WinXP Pro SP3

I was surprised at the smoothness, played the St. Lawrence river single mission. Driving rain, rough seas, plenty of pitch and roll and the frame rates are smooth on the CT!

Happy camper!

GTX250 here and no issues with frame rate and shadows. Smooth as can be.

Things are pretty swimmy/laggy inside the sub for me. When I get home I'll post my stats.

Nvidia 9500

High except shadows to 0 (I think)
AA to half

I still see shadows but they are kinda crappy shadows(Who really looks at the shadows while they play). With shadows max, same as everyone else. Turn shadows down and it runs fine.

Same here. Nvidia 8800GT OC 512. With everything maxed and AA half, and shadows off, it runs with decent framerates. Turn on any shadows at all it becomes unplayable. Might be time to upgrade:hmmm:

Win7 x64 / GTX295 / 196.75 / 1920x1200 / bells & whistles on :)

Framerate is a bit pokey inside the sub with shadows on, much faster with them turned off.

Well, it looks like we have more-or-less a unanimous consensus, must be a first for the Interwebs.

There appears to be a problem with shadows & nVidia cards.

I am also using an 8800GTS 640mb. Couple things I have noticed regarding this issue. It is definitely related to shadows and the reason ATI users don't experience it is simple in theory but difficult for NVidia to repair. If I had to guess I would say that DX is attempting to render the shadows and instead of allocating the proper number of pipelines for this, the driver is assigning too many. My card's fan kicks up which confirms this theory.

They are passing DX9 instructions to the GPU, and ATI's is handling it properly but NVIDIA's is not. I debugged for a long time last night trying to identify the difference, but unfortunately without an ATI system to compare I gave up trying to find it blind.

PS, a realtime debug log of DX output goes by so fast while playing that if you manage to read one line I commend you.

Guys -

Keep your eyes on www.nzone.com (http://www.nzone.com) for "BETA" Nvidia driver releases. These are often 2-3 major revisions ahead of WHQL drivers and often fix tons of issues without having to wait for Microsoft to "certify" them and give them a WHQL label.

Win7 Pro 64, GF8600 here. Latest drivers.
Runs nice on max, only the engine room and interior areas close to it make it slower.
Better without shadows, but still not as good as in bow compartment or "outside".

Thanks for the feedback, hope the devs paid attention. Indeed I can confirm from the other side that on ATI cards, interior performance is in fact noticeably better than exterior. Which points to a compatibility issue for sure.

Without any shodows all maxed out 70-120 frames under any circumstances.
With shodows, everything on max 10-20 frames, and jittaring water, Especially slow in Control Room
With shodows, everything on low 20-25 frames, and jittaring water, Especially slow in Control Room

9800 GTX here.

Have 15-25 fps with shadows on. 40-60 with shadows off. running AA halfway on it's slider.

If i close a few doors, i get more fps.

Mine is choppy when I'm in the sub, shadows are on the lowest setting. I'll report back tomorrow with results from turning them on and off.

Do we want to report this to Nvidia or wait to hear from the devs?

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit
Core i7 920
Geforce GTX 285
Driver 196.21

Try the new driver (196.75). It's slightly better and gave about 5 extra fps in control room. I have same system as you :)

Dual GTX 280's here. Shadows misbehave (act glitchy) and perform very badly under SLI. Turn off shadows, and all is well.

Probably a driver issue.

got the game i can confirm performance is terrible for nvidia users running a good card here GTX260OC version.

=control room massive frame rate hits?
=external is very glitchy in performance

dev team need to address all round frame rates for nvidia users.

not to turn this into a ATI v. NVIDIA issue, but it looks more and more like a NVIDIA driver issue.

I spent some time testing the FPS on my system last night.

I have a E8500, ATI 4890 (cat 9.12), 27" Dell WD monitor,creative X-fi fatal1ty soundcard, 2 gigs DDR2, Win XP pro sp3.

running at 1920x1200, max graphics, shadows on, v-sync off, no AA.

Inside the boat the fps always hovers between 60-80 and never goes below 60.

Out on deck in the ocean, fps again between 60-80 even when looking at shadow of boat. Boat shadow is rendered correctly.

The lowest FPS I have seen is 35-40 when on deck leaving harbour in the Narvik single mission. That scene is heavy with scenery and friendly AI ships.

I have never seen any slowdowns with explosions, etc.
