View Full Version : Free movement vs. locked stations

I was expecting to really dig the option of free movement throughout the boats, but I had no idea that we wouldn't also have the option of snapping to stations with hotkeys. Is anyone else finding this to be the worst change with SH5?
I can deal with screwy targeting and confusing UI, but the fact that I can't give orders to my deck crew to attack a ship for me is pretty ridiculous. Walking from station to station at 15fps (on a Core i7/280 machine) and doing everything myself is just obnoxious -- not to mention unrealistic.
Maybe I'm missing something. Is it even possible to give orders for your crew to use sonar/attack ships/etc now? Or does the captain really have to run around and push every button himself?

You can bind things to keys and I'm pretty sure they work from anywhere. The problem is most screens your mouse will be in 'movement' or 'map movement' mode which overrides key presses sometimes. It's all very annoying.
Than again, traveling the high seas for days at a time while resting on the net cutter was always a dream of mine, now fulfilled!
Where is the realism of being able to go from one station to another in a split second?

Giving orders. I sorly miss being able to giver orders anywhere!
I was always interested in how they did this exactly:
So you can't order a change in e.g. speed or course without walking up to the officer at the controls ? That would be weird. But on the other hand, there where all these digital speed readouts on the screenshots, are they used for input as well ?

I believe you can use the dials, IIRC, I saw a video where someone set the depth using the dial. :hmmm:
It's not so bad, and im already used to it. Will only get better when we can get some of our crew orders back.
You always have access to the navigation map no matter where you are btw. There's also a flyout attack map. You can plot on it while still looking through the scope, it's pretty nifty.

Yeah. How is it realistic for the captain to run around and do everything himself?
Is it possible to have your AI crew handle gunning? If not, that really sucks.

Dude, turn your shadows all the way off. You should be eating this game with that rig, there appears to be a problem with shadows and nVidia cards.

I agree with your post in general, but I've funny; I have the opposite issue with the deck gun, it seems to be manned and in free-fire mode at all times, so that when I lock up a ship with the binos, they're start blasting away at it. The order to un-man seems to be completely ineffective, too.

I have not been able to figure out how to tell my crew to fire on their own. The entire system is convoluted. I was hoping that a system similiar to SH3/4 in which you press the button but your guy walks there for you and you could still free roam if you like would have worked better but that feature is not in the game. I find the lack of AI on your own sub to be the most disappointing thing so far. Who knows, in the following days when people get used to the BS commands and get used to it we can get some people who are overly excited to work on it fix the annoying nuances of the game.
Glad I dont use nVidia cards anymore. My rig has graphics maxed and is chugging away at great frames :)
:arrgh!:

Not doing everything, but the captain should be able to give his orders from everywhere. Like telling his crew to dive, change course or whatever.
Using the dials that are around in almost every corner would be viable solution, I guess.

I have no problem using the dials but, first problem is that they all need to work. They don't. The compass on the bridge in not functional. The second problem is that in SH3/SH4 the compass was also a tool to tell your crew to set heading to XXX. As of now we have no option to do that.
If I had working compasses in all places they should be in the boat, and a way to tell the crew to set a certain heading, then just using the modelled gauges would be great.
For Deck Gun:
You have to use Binoculars, aim, and hit spacebar. Then the crew will begin firing on that target until it is destroyed and move on to another target. I dont know about AA, I am hoping that is just fire at will. I really don't want to have to sit up on the bridge and try to target the planes coming at me.
Personally I really like having to run around and give order's. It can be a hassle but no one you need to talk to is far from the control room. So far I enjoy talking to crew, hopefully we can get some good writer mods to make interesting new convos too.

THAT would have been nice!

Yep. That is an order that has survived through SH3 and 4!
