View Full Version : Maybe I'm just missing it...

After playing SH5 for a few hours now, I have to say that I'm impressed overall with the game engine and some of the mechanics, although the new hud is a bit simplistic for my taste.

I realize that the point of not having many hud options is that the player is expected to actually go to each individual officer to issue commands, which is fine...

...except for the fact that you can't actually issue commands to your officers! Sure, there are abilities, and the token "how are the kids" questions, but from what I can tell, there is no way to do things like get depth under keel, specify where the deck gun crew should be aiming, order a cease fire for your gun crew, have the sonar operator follow a sound contact, or any of those more 'technical' commands without playing around in the cfg files.

What the hell, Ubi?

The functionality is in the game...I mean, it's ALL there, along with accompanying voice tracks and animations, so why the hell can't I ask my navigator what my depth under keel is, or order the watch officer to aim for the waterline?!?

Maybe I'm just missing something, but I think it's absolutely ridiculous to expect a user to spend time tweaking the game's cfg files just to be able to access a few of the commands that are absolutely NECESSARY if playing on a high realism level. Again, the functionality is in the game...why are you making us rely on modders to make it available to us?

I guess I appreciate that you have a lot of faith in the Subsim community's talents, but COME ON.

That is all.

Because the casual gamer, whom they are trying to entice with all the new features, doesn't need to do any of the things you said. Us Sim lovers want to do those, but to just blow up ships, none of it's necessary.

SH 5 has serious gameplay problems/bugs on release?

I'm shocked.

Pity those publishers force you at gunpoint to buy a game on release day...

I think the perfect SH VI would be LOTS of eye candy, and 1 BIG BUTTON that says Fire! meaning you just aim, fire, and watch the ship sink, how's that ? [/sarcasm] -.-

I think that's exactly what the next game will be like, and no jokes.

coasterdigi is right.

i've just installed it, played for about 2 hours and i'm wondering where half of the funtionality has gone, its really disappointing. its like with each version since sh3, we're losing more and more of it.

sure you can now walk around the sub, which gets boring after a few times, but the controls are really clunky and its not really enjoyable at all. trying to go up the ladders is a mission in itself.

i'm running it on xp, E8400, 4GB ram, nvidia 285 GTX, SSD. its very smooth but the gui is really unintuitive and bloody annoying.

I really wanted to love this game too but its all looks and not much content at the moment.

Close! Except the button would be downloadable content that costs and extra $5.99 each time you want to use it.

Guess what? From what I'm hearing we're halfway there with this arcade release.

But before you can use it, not only do you have to pay, you have to be online!

Man, you don't know what it's like to have a software developer abduct you at gunpoint and force you into your local Best Buy! :)

I expected plenty of issues at launch. I guess I didn't quite expect so much to be left out, that's all.

Off to the cfg files I go!

No no that must be a fake, it looks too much simulation-oriented. The real deal is here:

I couldn't have said it better.

Ubisoft left us Subsimmers at the Dock.

Just played my first mission the starting mission. The game is actually pretty nice. But its going to take a lot to get use to this I tell yeah. Its odd.

And I can't get my observation scope to stay down. LOL.
It also has that effect that I hated in SHV. You know the movie effect.. But I can't find a way to disable it. Didn't like it in SHIV and still don't like it in SHV.

I haven't played it yet, so I can only imagine. I would say many things that could be directly controlled in SH3 and SH4 have now been relegated to officers instead, and that these things should be moddable to make it play more like the previous titles. When I get my hands on the editor, I will post again.

There ARE a bunch of ommissions in the interface. Most of them I found to be minor so far, but you're right, the decision to change the interface irks me a little. I can't help but think "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" - six dials and a set of officer report buttons were a very good system imho and I miss them sorely now.

On the other hand it doesn't turn me off from the rest of the game, and I hope many of these features are soon restored - they really are needed.
