Just installed the game, system checks stated all was well for the graphic settings. Went in game and checked what was ticked...all max except AA. Thought I'd test the FPS and lo and behold..only 17FPS in the sub.....so much for the game system recommendations. Running a q6600 at 2.9ghz , 4 gb system ram at 900 and a Gforce GTX 260 overclocked with 1.8Gb onboard ram.
Ah well, guess it will just sit on my HD then and back to SH4 and Op Mon ....:(

I had the same issue, with just about the same specs as you until I turned off the shadows completely, then it shot up to 60fps in the sub and 80 outside (which is still odd, should be the reverse).

What drivers are you using?

Come on m8... you think they can predict/test full compatability between all possible makes and models of CPU, Graphics Card, and RAM in all possible combinations?

REALLY? :-?

And did you check to see if there were any driver updates before you wrote it off as a game issue?

And do you know with absolute certainty that it has nothing to do with other background processes running on your computer?

And did you try simply turning down the HDL/Shadows - its not the best Graphics card...

:hmmm:

New drivers are out today and have been reported to fix fps issues as well as overclocking :know:

I agree with most of your post, but c'mon, the GTX260 is certainly good enough for this engine.

Ive been gaming for over 13 years mate....:) so I know the script. How about I sell you a car, does 56miles to the gallon...but you have to push it the first twenty and then you'll get the full mileage ;)

Ok I'll give you that - it's not "bad". I've got a GTX 285 which I love personally and I have 2 friends who bought 260s and new regret not going for something better.

They complain about having to turn AA settings down.

I think you're just being a little harsh in your assessment of the situation. :O: This is more a case of push a Shelby Cobra 100 yards and it's yours...
You're darn right I'm going to push that car 100 yards!

I had absolutely awful FPS when I first started playing it. Just turning around was a slide-show. I have a system that far exceeds the specs so I was quite surprised. (Although the installer only seemed to detect 2GB of my 6GB of ram!! :stare:)

I stuck with it for a bit and by the time I was heading back to base on the tutorial mission thingy it was running smooth. Every time I have played it since, including re-doing the tutorial it has been fine. For some reason that first 15 min ran like sh*t.

Well the devs had always said the biggest reason they took the shadows out of the previous games was because they require alot of horsepower, but im surprised to here that even your setup cant push more than 17 fps hmmm, thiers new nvidia drivers out by the way might want to check em out as people are saying they get good performance increase with em:up:

Half Life 2 has shadows and that game is 8 years old! What horsepower?! The game needs optimising and hopefully the new Patch has improved things.

Exactly. You can find shadows in pretty much every game these days and some (like ArmA/A2) have huge areas with craploads of shadows.

tutorial mission thingy

tutorial? am I missing something, all I have are historical missions or the campaign.

On the FPS thing, I am not sure what is the issue, I have a E8500, ATI 4890 (cat 9.12), 27" monitor, play w. max graphics, no AA, but the fps never dips below 40 even in a crowded harbour.

....a GTX 260 should be good enough for full bells and whisles up to 22`` Monitors....Even GTA 4 run on mine with 35-60 FPS.....

Surely is different when you sit before a 30`` Monior....

a good test would be lower the resolution because this lower the hit on a card...if the problem persist I would point to a driver issue....

Sorry, I need two days before I get the game....can not test now with my GTX260...

Well, I don't know if ARMA2 is the best example, it runs like a ballz on even a high-end machine.

The first mission of the campaign, Invasion Of Poland, is the tutorial:yep:

I should point out that in my case, shadows are only causing a problem in the control room and when I'm staring directly at the radio dude. On the bridge, with everything maxed at 1680x1050 (and yes, high AA) I get about 40-50 fps on the high seas. So I'm thinking there's a particular shadow shader or light source that is gagging on my machine.

I'm using 191.07 drivers, planning on trying the new set tonight, but I'd take reports of a massive fps increase with a healthy dose of skepticism. I've never seen such a dramatic illustration of placebo effect as when a new driver set is released.

With shadows off, the game frankly looks pretty good still, and fps are through the roof (80 fps on bridge, sometimes over 100 interior).

When performance sucks, the first thing to turn down is always the shadows. At least that makes sense. :yep:

But looking at the shots, interior shadows don't seem that complex. Weird it's taking such a heavy toll. :hmmm:

Yeah, turning my shadows off made my performance go from terrible to pretty damn good. :DL (It's a fairly old machine!)
