First off, hello everyone.
Been playing Silent Hunter since the very 1st one and a little bit of Enigma Rising tide thrown in for good measure. Just recently found out about Silent Hunter 5 coming out and learned about the u-boat missions add on so went and bought that as well.
I love the U-boat campaigns, Silent Hunter 3 was by far my favorite installment (Even if I can't get it to work on my vista 64bit system :( )
Anyhow, been playing the new u-boat campaign and a few things have cropped up that I hope you all can help me with
1: Torpedo Data Computer. Is there anyway to access the torpedo settings while still looking through the attack periscope? I tend to set my torpedoes to run deep with the magnetic detonation. On the bigger capital ships I also like to run a 0 or 1 degree spread salvo for multiple impacts in a short amount of time.
In silent hunter 4 I used to be able to access all this data right at the attack periscope, I've not yet been able to figure out how to do it on the u-boat campaigns though. Instead I've been ID'ing my target, switching to the attack map, setting the depth and speed, then back to the Periscope to fire. I know I can fire from the attack map but it just doesn't feel right doing it that way lo. Little complaint but during certain high stress situations the extra clicking makes it feel all the more stressful lol.
2: Officer Skills. Where did this come from and is it worth it? Don't get me wrong I like the idea of it but somehow it seems a little... Off to me. Better crew regen and lower fatigue on some officers? Not sure how I feel about that yet. So far I've been ignoring it and using the regular crew assigned to me and my ship, but sometimes I wonder if I'm hindering myself by not taking advantage of the skills.
3: Torpedoes and ship damage. Is there a list or something of how much damage each one does or the suggested torpedo for each type of ship? I've been testing out the various ones that are offered. Seems the standard steam powered ones sink a ship much faster then the others.
Last night I tried out the acoustic homing torpedo that works on both escorts and merchants. Tribal Destroyer chasing me after I sank the Fleet carrier. Dang thing took 3 torpedoes to the side to sink when I usually sink them with one of the Steam powered ones. Tried the wakeless torpedo on a lone Liberty Cargo ship and it took all 4 of them and only listed to the side on me lol. Waited with time compression on for awhile as it chugged along before finally I said heck with it and finished it off with my deck gun.
4: Finally, torpedo targeting boxes. I haven't played enough to test it out but I remember back in Silent Hunter III, with a skilled torpedo man and at a close enough range targeting boxes would appear on the ship in the recognition manual. You could aim for the keel, the fuel tanks or the engine room etc, etc. It was a nice little feature that I used quite a bit. Does that make a return in the u-boat add on or is that something that's been scrapped in this? (Hopefully it makes a return in SH V)
Apologies for the list of questions, I did try the forum search feature but I fear my Search-Fu is weak :(
Thanks in advance everyone and any help is appreciated
Conrad
Edit:
One last thing (I know stop me now) Is there anyway to get my crew to sound a bit more... Germanic? I guess is the right word? lol
