Ok I was going to ask if the type VII even had an echolot in real life, but The Google told me yes.

"U-574 (Type VIIC) was stated to use two kinds of echolots. The one used in depths up to 300 metres, graduated in metres, indicates directly on a depth gauge, is operated electrically, and can only be used vertically. The second echolot has no limit for depth; it operates acoustically, and is also capable of being used vertically."

From watchinig movies and reading books (Tom Clancy) :D I have learned that a modern submarine might ping a target to get its range, but the sub would in the same process reveal themselves to others listening in the area.

So I am wondering if both of the echolod mentioned here, would disclose the presence of the submarine to others when used to get the depth under keel value.

Made me doubt and you made me sure
One step forward and two steps back
Nobody gets too far like that
One step forward and two steps back
This kind of dance can never last

yes it would but it was used when you werent around ships to detect you or if they already had you located you might use it to sit on the bottom without "hitting" it and sinking yourself

it wasnt done willy nilly and think of it like surfacing, you make sure its safe before you do it like in setting up an attack, before the enemy is in range, you locate where the bottom is so if you need to go deep to evade after the attack you know your limits

I gotta admit, i thought it was ridiculous to have a hydrophone operator that might cry... but now I really can't wait to ruin his day and have him bawling for home. Hope that doesn't make me a bad guy... :D

Danke. But I feel I must share some of the credit with the navigator's bum, which I've always considered a source of great inspiration. :O:

The instrument you referre to I believe is called the echolot (sp). It is an device that is operated by THE NAVIGATOR, not the hydrophone operator.

On the boat it is located above the navigator's position and looks like a black dial with a white concentric ring.

The device was like a small active sonar set, but pointed down. There was no head set like the ones found on the hydrophone set. Instead the instrument fired a ping straight down, and measure the amount of time it took for a return. Then a pointer in the circle would orient itself to the determined depth under keel.

All U-boats had this.

Key point, it was used by the navigator, not the sound man.

it appears to be an undocumented key, CCIP has it in his keyboard command mod in the SH5 mod forum.

Question: I am using ddrgn's keymap mod at the moment which maps depth under keel to SHIFT-N. it works because I can clearly hear a ping, but I can't seem to find the depth somewhere. any ideas?

Try restarting your campaign. What you should hear the guy reporting, the ping and see the report `depth under keel is XXX meters`on your message screen.

Uh, shouldn't this work without restarting the campaign? Not a very good sign for modding if it doesn't.

They had charts back then you know. Why doesn't the map show it or press a key and it shows depth at the cursor or a number tucked away on the screen that shows deph at cursor location.

I dunno, I always figured that since the necessary equipment was actually on WWII uboats, that's how they did it then, with the Echolot, so it's something that's reflected in the game. I don't know that they even had accurate and complete depth charts for all the bodies of water they operated in.

In real life I would expect the sounding to also be used as navigation tool which can be checked against the charts in order to help determine position. Just like an altimeter is helpfull when navigating on land in hilly areas. They didn't have any INS nor GPS back then :88)

The physical device is located in the control room. You might be able to read the value directly off it instead of reading the chat buffer.

You should get a vocal readout as well as figures in the message window.
