Distance Q in SH5 ? How High are you off the Sea when standing watch on top of the coning tower ?

If say 20ft then according to the chart I read online , your horizon is about 5.2miles away. So if we see ships on our horizon then according to that scale they can be no more than 5.2 mile from you.

Given that is the case , should the models of ships on our horizon not be bigger ?

It says if your standing on shore (your view point) and your eyeline is 6ft off the ground , then the horizon you see is 3 miles away. Ive seen ships on the horizon from a beach and they look a lot bigger than what you see through a periscope in SH games.

Do you think the scale of ships is correct SH series compared the the uboat and men or should they be bigger.

You forgot a very important thing in you calculation... the ship's height.
Of course you can see ships that are farther away than 5.2 miles. It's just that you can't see the waterline of the ship anymore because that is below horizon.

Not my Calc's it was taken for a scale on the web , but anyhoo of course as you said depending of the size of the ship you could see it further out, but my main point about it was , should the ship models not be bigger. Stand on shore and look out to sea and if there is a large ship on the horizon which would be according the the scale anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 miles out you can clearly see them with the naked eye. But in SH a ship the same distance away look like specks on the horizon or slightly bigger.

Bigger compared to what?

size is relative. If you made everything in the game 100x bigger, everything would still look the same.

this is important but IMO a very technical detail sort of thing and i think its something that could and should wait until after the game is patched so the functionality issues can be addressed first

I think when Kaluen says height of the ship he means the enermy ship your spotting not yours.

EI the horizon might be such a such a distance but the ship might have a height to it that you did not calculate that you can see.

And to be honest if your going to make a thread about this, then you have to include SH3 SH4 too. They all do the same thing. :rotfl2:

About 500 T2 tankers were built during WWII and they could still navigate the "Canals" (Panama and Suez)

The Max tankers of today are forced to go the "around Cape Good Hope" route.

Big is relative.
