I won't write a review, but here's some information:
When I woke up this morning, the SH5-dvd had arrived. However, I noticed that there was no cable-tv/ internet, so
that was just typical, hehe. A view hours later the net was back, and I was ready to fire up SH5.
(The game did install without internet connection.)
- install with english or german voices
- choose qwerty or azerty keyboard layout
- total installation with english voices is about 6.1GB
- Seems like you can have your own custom poster-picture, this is found in the CaptainPicture-folder
- there's a mission editor

- Various FPS on my system, from 10 to 50, so I have to turn down some stuff and tune it. SH4 worked fine with everything to the max.

- The keyboard-commands (e.g. walking) can't be changed.

- Can't turn off the highlighting of objects.

- Discovered a couple of bugs, like clicking on men while you are in the captains lug, through the walls, and also clicking on the bed next to the captains lug, takes you to the captains bed. And sometimes going up/ down the ladders, you are not in center of the ladder, but you go to the side of it.

Hopefully this will be fixed. It could also be my gfx-drivers that's not up-to-date.

Haven't found the poster/picture I wrote about earlier, so I don't know if that is an upgrade-option or what.

Haven't had any trouble with login to the server/ connection so far.

be nice if Ubisoft seen their release date was botched by retailers and just offer the game now for download from their site, D2D, and Steam...

This sort of thing is not unheard of. They ship out copys to the retailers with instructions to not put them out until such and such a date.

Of course the retailers have 'friends' and... welll... this is not uncommon.

There was indeed some crucial information needed, especialy about DRM. But now it's time to enjoy the game for those who have it, and for waiting (just a few days) for others.

Crew: I don't know if there something with my eyes, but I counted different number of crews several times, 24, 25, 26, hehe, but it's around that number :)

- Red lights: you cannot control it. And at night, the red light is in the entire submarine.

- I also discovered some more walking-bugs, but I guess they belongs in the bugs-post.

Overal good framerate, but it drops down to 10-14 in control-room, so I still have to turn down some effects.

Speaking of crush depth and implosion.

I vaguely recall reading (or was it perhaps while watching a movie) that on implosion, the air get compressed and then the gases ignites and turns into an exploding fireball.

Any expert opinions on what happens when a submarine implodes at great depths?

That's called dieseling and happens when you compress air in the presence of a fuel, so unless you have a fuel leak (air has to be mixed with the fuel), then it won't happen.

When the hull starts to fail due to pressure, the hull deforms from a cylindrical cross-section, which is the strongest cross section, to a cross section with a flat part, so further failure is rapid. The floor adds bracing along the cross section of the hull, so the failure point is above or below the centreline. It's ceiling meets floor time in the blink of an eye, with the crushing pressure of the weight of sea at that depth.

Yeah, it's instant. I saw a special once a long time ago that explained it.

Basically, if you were in an area that did not crush for some odd reason the water would just appear all around you instantly.
One second you were dry talking to someone next milli-second you were underwater, the pressure is so great you can't exhale to scream,
you just black out, that's it.
It still scares the living Sheri out of me.

I recall reading about explosive decompression a couple of years ago. It was a news article about an accident aboard a oil rig in the North Sea area (roughly).

Iirc, what happened was that a diver decompression chamber aboard an oil rig had somehow decompressed violently, as the chamber door had accidentally been opened or breeched somehow.

I noticed details about how the few people inside perished. Iirc, the ones close to the chamber opening experienced fatal explosive decompression and the bodies were mutilated so to speak. The ones deeper inside the chamber had a different complication, with the pressure squezing the fat in the body into the arteries, turning the blood into goo if I understood it correctly.

I believe a couple of people right outside the chamber opening died as well. Don't know what happened them.

Thinking of the crush depth implosion event, I suppose that the people inside would experience some kind of fatal complication and not simply drown. It all sounds so trivial until one get to learn the gritty details. Having said this, I have no knowledge about what might happen on a imploding submarine.

It's actually illegal for them to be releasing the game early like this, and the stores can even get sued pretty bad by the companies for it. It's not like Ubi is holding the game back -- just that some places aren't paying attention and drop the game before release date. The reality is that most places (especially big chains) are probably not going to release it. Don't blame Ubi because half a dozen stores in the boonies can't read a release date :P

This means that the pirates have a hold of it, I'll bet, which means the new DRM is already being put to the test. It had better be damn well worth it.

I'm one of those people who got to benefit from Canadian stores releasing SH5 early. Envy me! :DL

So far my experiences have been pretty positive, though I've barely scratched the surface. Here are my initial observations.

The graphics are very impressive. The water feels very real, especially when walking on the deck of the u-boot.

The beginning of the game starts, as you know, with the war being declared. It's a cinematic intro, somewhat reminiscent of Das Boot. You quickly sink some ships as a tutorial and you're on your way.
One flaw is that people don't move out of your way when you walk around the boat, as seen in the scripted scenes. It's not a huge issue, as crew are usually standing out of the way, but some, like the engineer, are in the middle of the corridor and you end up "clipping" through them. This ghosting does take away from the feeling that you're really there, so for immersion reasons I hope a suitable move-the-hell-out-of-the-way animation is patched or modded in.
Interface-wise, though I understand where people are coming from when they want it to be period-looking, it's not really a big issue for me, and it seems relatively intuitive. Though maybe I haven't dug deep enough yet.
The HUD at the bottom left serves as a easy shortcut for setting depth/speed. With the ctrl key pressed, the HUD changes to allow for a more precise setting (ie. specific depths instead of periscope/surface, and specific speeds instead of slow, flank).
The crew's voices sound less robotic. Less unnatural pauses between numbers ala SHIII/IV

Here are some screens. Anti-aliasing is off (turning it up requires a game restart, and I didn't want to waste the time). My FPS, as you can see, is excellent, but is strained somewhat in the control room. (My system is Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 4 gigs RAM, Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216, Win7 x64). 1680x1050 game resolution and high graphics settings.

So far, the rpg part of SHV remind me a bit of the B52 Mighty Eight simulator from Microprose.

So far, the graphic is really the biggest improvement from the previous version.

This awesome upgrade of the game , can someone tell me if this extends to the damage model ?

In one of the video releases where a merchant with what I can only discribe as goal post riggs with cranes ( don't know the correct term ) but the frame work over the holds , when the ship was hit moments later his whole rig came sliding off the ship in one piece, liked it did in SH3/SH4.

Was this just footage from an early version of the game or is the deck damage model more or less the same as previous games.

Thanks ...

EB Games. Their computers say it's released, which means that as soon as they have stock they'll sell them.

EB Games. Their computers say it's released, which means that as soon as they have stock they'll sell them.

It's available (confirmed) in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. Probably in other EB locations too. And it's actually $10 cheaper there than at Best Buy :D

Confirmed at EB Games in Lévis (Québec city area)!:woot:

Confirmed 50$ (10$ cheaper than amazon.ca) (Neal is gonna get the 10$ I saved!)

No more PC games on shelves, got to ask it (they got it in a drawer).

I shouldn't have spent time here this morning.:damn:

1. Is it true about permament connection? Do you need this or you can disable this. And where are the saves keeping? On your machine or somewheres in net abys? :woot:
2. Do you need run trough the whole u-bota to each station to give simply order: reload torp... or go to the battlestation?
3. There is a bell (periscope depth) or siren?

How many of these threads have you read?

Yes, you need a permanent connection. The saves will be at their server and on your computer.

2. Do you need run trough the whole u-bota to each station to give simply order: reload torp... or go to the battlestation?
No, running through the boat is eye candy only. You can give orders just like in previous games.

3. There is a bell (periscope depth) or siren?
In one of the many videos you hear a bell.
