Got it just now. :woot: The cd/dvd. I went in to see if they knew when they'd have it next week, but was surprised to find they already had it.
I suspect it won't activate until next week; won't know until I get home later. Can access the manual though and am going to ignore work and look through it now.

Well, that's why I didn't mention, and won't mention, where I got it. I asked if they knew when they'd be getting it next week. The guy said they already had it and pulled out a copy. I was in the middle of saying I was surprised and that the release date wasn't until next week. So he was looking at his screen saying he couldn't see any restriction on it. Another guy came over, checked and said the same. I said again it wasn't due out until next week, but maybe it wouldn't activate yet. But they said they saw no reason they couldn't hand it over.
So if they made a mistake, it was an honest one.

Terrible in fact, snowing 3 days straight, honestly i had to keep calm when i got the call to pick up my games, i went to the store calm, saw copies lying on the floor, then started to believe it, paid for my copes bundled them up in my jacket and told them its not supposed to be out until March 2. They started going through papers, etc thinking they made a mistake. I know they did cuz they guy talked about street dates and release dates, he thinks release date has happened already and street date was March 2, therefore good to go.... LOL no. They fffed up.
My take is its end of month, they need to show numbers and why the hell not its a niche title, no one knows no one cares, so release, boom I get my copes they get my money and there numbers go up slightly.
Lucky day, good old silent hunter gods smiled upon me.
I can honestly tell you after my first walk through the sub, I'm blown away, I installed the german voice pack and it sounds awesome...
So pumped, got to play......

This is per all the DRM threads. The rumor is that if you lose your internet connection, the game will pause until connection is re established, or you get booted, possibly losing your progress in the game.. I know neal posted a video of it, but nothing happened. Heard later that it took 6 minutes before he was booted from the game. Long story short, from what ive read/heard, the game requires a CONSTANT internet connection, if it doesn't have one, it stops working in some form. Im guessing there's a timeout period before it does that .. IF it does that.
So if someone can confirm it does that or not, the local injun's will be either really happy, or boiling mad on the warpath. lol.

Well, I'm up and running. Been playing for a couple of hours or more.
I am not going to "review" or comment for now. In a couple of hours I've only been through the training mission and am just going on my first war patrol. I'm still getting a handle on the controls (and lest anyone think that infers that the controls are lousy, not at all; if it's taking me longer than others might take it's only because I'm hamfisted and slow with it etc. Running on the default settings for now until I get used to things. So sorry if it disappoints, but it would be totally premature to say anything other than the following, keeping in mind it's obviously in relation to my pc and my internet connection.
It looks great, runs smoothly, has nice controls (the ones I've used so far). I don't want to get into the DRM for/against thing; just that I've had no problem so far with the online aspect. No, I'm sorry, I haven't played around with disconnecting from the internet yet. Having too much fun exploring.
I've taken some screenshots (I think). I'll see if I can locate them as and when I stop playing and post them, which I'm afraid may be quite a while.

Can you find where to set the spread?
I have already figured out that you can set up hot keys np. Your standing anywhere hit the edited hot key and your at any station. Just have to edit the commands file like in SH4.
I cant figure out where my battery and fuel levels are...
I did disconnect a few times and nothing stopped. DRM isn't owning anything yet and I am screwing around with editing the cfg. So I am loading over and over, its one click on the Sh5 iconm the DRM loads in 5 secs your on the intro window. I already removed the intro movies though so mine goes right to loading. The explosions are sweeet!!!
Can you even play it? The servers might not be up until the official release date.

Now, I am not trying to scare anyone here, but I am almost 100% positive that I could always disable the adapter, even when a program was using the internet connection. But for whatever reason when I went to disable the adapter this time I got this:
http://i953.photobucket.com/albums/ae14/crashed97tsi/Silent%20Hunter%205/W2TF-1.jpg
So, I then pulled my cord at about 10:41PM, and went back to the game. By 10:43, this popped up:
http://i953.photobucket.com/albums/ae14/crashed97tsi/Silent%20Hunter%205/SH52010-02-2622-32-52-58.jpg
There was no opportunity to save your progress or anything, it just popped up with that screen. Also, when I popped the cord back in the game was the last thing to restore. My internet, weather connection, etc all game back first.
It is pretty draconian if you ask me. Luckily SH is really the only Ubisoft game I play.
Now as for screenshots of the game, I'll take some once I get used to it. It all just feels a little odd right now, the beginning is not what I expected.

Thanks for taking the time to show us this stuff. When the connection was restored, did the game resume at the point where it left off or did it require you to reload from a save?

It resumed where the game left off, but to be honest this crap from Ubi is doing something totally unacceptable. Out of curiosity, I shut down the game and tried to disable my adapter with everything else running. This is the result:
http://i953.photobucket.com/albums/ae14/crashed97tsi/Silent%20Hunter%205/W2TF2-1.png
So, the Ubisoft Cloud DRM is not allowing me to change a setting in MY COMPUTER. They are effectively taking control of that setting on my computer whenver their program is in use.
This is a BIG BIG deal to me, I've actually stopped playing to research this issue further. None of my other programs do this. As you can see from the screenshots, Steam has been running in the background the whole time.
I'm getting what I deserved for not doing more research. At least its supporting SH5 I guess.

Sorry to hear you weren't aware of it. It's been a bit of a hot topic here. We do appreicate you letting us know how it works. I'll quit pestering you now and let you get back to your game.
The game resumes when connection is restored, without losing your progress. That's a big relief.

I'm going to withhold my opinion on the info you've given, (cause i fear this may have already hijacked the thread to hell and gone), but am only going to say, thank you for taking the time to look into the issue for the curious.
hmmm
I just played the first mission in the campaign, i started, saved my game, unplugged my net, 10 seconds later im bumped to the main menu, saying retry when connection is established again,
but there was a choice at the top to continue mission, i click that 10 seconds later game is reloaded to the same point i left off, i save the game again, and continue on without plugging the net back in, finished off the mission,, relugged in the net and here i am

Yup, all the objections are not for nothing... but I digress. What do you mean exactly it's not allowing you to change your settings?

Thanks for the info Crash.
I've never before done this, or even cared enough, about DRM measures to not buy a game. Starforce did piss me off once I learned what it did, and by then it was too late.
Until I know more about how Ubi's DRM is handling my net connection, I will not buy this title.
If Ubisoft are listening, I reserve the right to control my hardware, not you. You want to prevent piracy, that's fine with me. Sail the high seas. Just leave my computer alone.
I get the same problem with the network adapter, i cant disable it when the DRM is running, when off I can

Yup, all the objections are not for nothing... but I digress. What do you mean exactly it's not allowing you to change your settings?
If you look at the screenshots, specifically the taskbars in both, you will see what programs are running when I attempt to disable the connection. The first one, where windows give me the message about not being able to disable the connection, has Steam, Hardware Monitor, Fraps, SH5 and Ubisoft's DRM thing running.
The second screenshot is all the same programs minus SH5 and Ubisoft's DRM thing. The connection disables without a problem. You may have to zoom out the screenshots in order to be able to tell.
Since I have never been denied access to disable a peripheral on this machine since I built this computer is leading me to believe that this DRM is taking over that connection when it is running.
I hope I am explaining the problem so you can understand, I took the screenshots to help out.
Edit: and it is my pleasure for testing this, I am glad I did. I may never have discovered this issue otherwise.
Edit 2: I have to go for a bit guys, gotta run some errands. I will be back later tonight and do some more testing with the DRM.

I am using that method, I just never did this with my dual monitor setup before, which is making the screenshots very long. I am going back through and deleting that and resizing the canvass in paint. Hopefully, that will make the screenshots more readable
And no, Steam has nothing to do with Silent Hunter 5. I just happened to have it running at the same time.

Need some Wireshark and TCPView action to see what's going on. Wireshark to understand the frequency and volume of traffic to the Hive, TCPView to understand state of TCP connection(s), and if you can kill the connections, and if the game re-establishes them automatically (likely, but slow; would be nice to know how fast it comes back). That last bit about killing the connections manually is to see if they are "unkillable", which I've seen on some apps on occasion, but not being able to disable your NIC is harsh.

Thanks for giving us the heads up, I've been trying to decide what to buy the next month. It's been Supreme Commander 2 or SH5, and well after what you have posted the only reason I would ever buy SH5 is to crack their god damn drm even if I'm no cpu expert, at least I know sniffing but I guess they do use some authentication protocols which will need more advanced stuff than sniffing.
Funnily enough, even though this might and above might have been above forum guidelines. I might actually buy the game if it does get cracked, I mean even Ubi themselves resort to cracks, look up Rainbow Six Vegas if you want to know what I mean.
Thanks

Using the forbidden "C" word here? TWICE?
Neal will bust your @ss!!! :DL
If the game gets cracked, it merely serves to show how pointless the DRM was in the first place.
If it doesn't get cracked, then Ubi actually has an argument.

There are many types of cracks, some I love!;) some like in my wall I hate!:yep:
I also hate piracy, but cracks are not in anyway piracy!:yep:
Maybe not always piracy, but they can be used for it, which is precisely why they are illegal.
Not saying that's right (the "illegalize everything because of one illegitimate use mentality), but it is what it is, and I think we've said enough.

Like the above, laughed at this one =P
Well ubisoft themselves have clearly agreed that cracks are good, like I said look above at the rainbow six vegas thing. If anyone doesn't want to bother with looking it up, ubisoft had issues with drm in the game and instead of using their own patch to fix it, they released the piracy group Reloadeds crack as a patch.
I can honstely say I had cracked every storebought physical gamecopy I had installed a few years back, I just hated CDs.... constantly having to swap them blah blah. The last few years it's been different however, the last game I bought from a store as a physical copy must have been WoW or Oblivion I'm not sure if I can find any other PC games around my house from 2000+ actually that have a cd.
Of course I have bought 50-150 games or so from digital stores, and yay I rarely need to crack these since there's no damn cd from the start =P. I can say that I did crack a few securom and tages game because the god damn drms were causing issues with other software. Cracks solved that problem.
I've been playing SH games since the 2nd one I think or it might have been the first, such a long time ago. This is actually the first time I'm not going to buy a copy, but yes a crack removing the ubidracodrm would make me buy it. For me cracks are a way of solving nuisances that those developers seem to think will sell more games.
If someone who buys a game and cracks it to make it work better gets hanged out then that's just sad. Sure the eulas and crap do say that you can't modify anything in the damn game but yes like someone posted it was either:
1. My cat
2. I was intoxicated and was not fully in control of my actions
That made the nasty eula go away.
I'm a software developer myself so I do hate piracy but I also believe that fighting it with drm is the most stupid way of fighting it. Think of who suffers from the drm?
1. Legit customers
2. The crackers who make the pirated games
(less than 1% of the games are not cracked in a year), statistics pulled out of my ass. I do know a few games that didn't get cracked within a year of release and most of them did have a really crazy drm online activation and so on. But the biggest reason for not getting cracked was probably that they were niche games from the start.
3. The company itself for losing money on implementing drm
Well that's all I can think of, nr 1 is the biggest and nr2 is the smallest which is why I think drm is stupid beyond recognition.

This further means that, somehow, Ubisoft managed to break their own anti-piracy rules and, at the same time, commit piracy by stealing the crack (because, honestly, I doubt that the two groups worked together on this). A very, very funny situation which will probably be remembered for a long time by the gamers' community - and we must admit we're really curious to see how Reloaded will respond to the whole deal. Just imagine how hilarious the following headline would look in the newspapers: "Cracking group sues developers for stealing crack".
I didn't knew this. What a foolish strategy.

Thanks for the quick Answer, mmmm thats sounds like what I was worried about, though im guessing, if you keep pressing arrows, that it moves 1 degree each time, and if you press SHift Arrow, like Neal stated, then thats hard s/board / Port then 0 to amidships.

It seems like EB Games in Canada has the wrong date in their computers, they handed SH5 over without hesitation, the guy said "oh, it released a few days ago" :DL

Spent a couple hours with it. Most of the fears ( other than DRM ) most of us have been concerned about are unfounded in my first impressions. We can still control things pretty much as in previous versions except DIFFERENTLY...Some things more intuitive, some less..Make no mistake, there are annoying little struggles to make happen what you want to happen. ( Still can't get the observation 'scope all the way down! )
Bottom line, IMHO, there's a lot of playability here once we adapt to a somewhat different approach to the sim..but a lot of the changes are based on former version wishlists. The devs have given us more content, however, if part of their intent was to widen the appeal to FPS arcade crowd, it's minimal . I'm sure there aren't enough rivits or the right colors here and there but I served on British "A" boats which were VERY similiar to the VIIC and I'm not distracted enough by those elements not to say this SH version makes you feel more part of something that happened in history......

Some people also said that there was only few bugs/giltches from their first impression.
I'm really looking foward to confirm if all this is really true. If it is, it's really gonna make me chuckle...;)

Hmmm... it seems like its getting released early in Canada more then other places... I might just have to find my wallet in this mess of a room, and go out on the hunt!:arrgh!:

Because your are looking through it, get off the scope then close it.

How is the server thus far as far as up and down time, being that we have to be connected to the internet the whole time? Granted population may be low at this time but am curious.

Ok, here is an update for you on the whole DRM thing. The game plays and ran fine when my internet connection was up. So, to test the whole DRM thing, I went to go to disable my ethernet adapter.
Now, I am not trying to scare anyone here, but I am almost 100% positive that I could always disable the adapter, even when a program was using the internet connection. But for whatever reason when I went to disable the adapter this time I got this:
I would like to get my hands on the xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx . Anyone care to share? I'm not buying SH5 due to the DRM btw.
You're not going to be posting here much longer either if you keep on this track. --NS

This baby will need a lot of work to truly live up to the DVD on the left, but I am very optimistic. She's looking fine and running stable.
Any info I can help clarify?

Hi CCIP,
can you confirm this by own experience, please?

I haven't tried disabling the adapter and frankly I don't see why I would do that while playing a game, but yes, this is true. Ubisoft's game launcher is a separate, resident program that is active all while the game is playing and takes up about 16mb RAM and a single (I think) network port while running. It generates no network traffic most of the time, in fact almost none at all. It closes and leaves the system memory the moment I close the game.

please keep in mind there is a line you should not cross when discussing the DRM protection and getting into details about how it works. posting anything about loopholes or work arounds can get you banned.
just a friendly reminder to be carefull with this topic

Don' t get me wrong please. I am not interested in any technical information anyway.
It is because of this:
On the board over there an "official" named BB_ScriptError (I don't know him at all, so blame me ) stated the following:
http://forums-de.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3431013487/m/9581067538/p/2 in German language
"Hallo zusammen,
Roughly translated:
"Hello at all,
before rumor goes on here:
None of the system settings are changed, no drivers or hidden programs are installed.
Especially Windows is not touched to take control over the rights of the user dealing with the LAN connection."
That's the case why I am interested in.
Edit: Just for the record: I do not support pirating!

This is also some kind of rumor. As it looks to me, BB_ScriptError doesn't even have a copy of SH5 running.
The question is whether SH5 uses a seperate protocol rather than TCP/IP. Maybe one of you who's already playing SH5 can answer this ...?

It has to use IP encapsulated packets to get them from your machine across the network to UBI servers. That's Layer 3 traffic.
For Layer 4, it might be using TCP (most likely) or it's own protocol, which it would have to install to your computer. There's no reason they would just invent a new protocol. They are doing all the authorization, encryption and other communication in the Application layer. So I'm betting business as usual, TCP/IP under the hood, with their own application data...
Them preventing the disable Network Connection arises suspicion tho, looks like a kind of driver level software at work there..

Q: Why does the Ubisoft Game Launcher stop me from disabling my network connection?
A: The Ubisoft Game Launcher does not stop you from disabling the network connection. However, Windows does not allow you to stop a network connection that has an open encrypted connection. This is a feature of Windows, not the Ubisoft Game Launcher.

Now that makes perfect sense.
True, this couldn't be a 'feature' invented by UBI, as the very same message showed up before and not in context of a game.
It'd still be interesting, though, whether UBI uses a standard protocol or not ;)
