How should the subsim community best support its members who don't have internet ?

Seriously, DRM appart, SH5 appart, if you are honest with yourself you'll see that there's very little you can do with a PC in 2010 without internet.

I don't see the point of spending 1000$ on a PC, without having access to internet.

Is there some kind of Amish fellowships in the PC gamers?

Sadly this is a tough one, we should all buy SH5 to show Ubisoft there is great demand for the game, but that might also prove them right that their new DRM is working. Which wouldn't help those without Internet much at all.

We could all boycott to buy Silent Hunter 5 which might make them (if everyone did this) to remove the DRM so those without Internet can play as well. Unrealistic this will ever happen as I am personally going to buy SH5, hehe.

Perhaps we have came to a point in time that an internet connection is as required to play as having Windows XP/Vista/7 and a graphic card with enough muscles to handle the game. Right or wrong, this might be what we are facing...

Was going to vote #1, because it's mean but funny, but I don't want that one to get too many votes.

Was going to vote #2, because it's funny too, but I don't want people thinking I'm greedy, because I'm not.

Was going to vote #3 for the same reason as #1, but didn't for the same reason as #1.

Was going to vote #4, because it's the closest thing to a real option, but there are already petitions and polls just for that, so I didn't.

Was going to vote #5, because I wouldn't buy it as long as it has 'IT' anyway, but I don't have that option, so I figured that would seem greedy as well, and I think people should buy it if they want too.

So I didn't vote.

UBI have already committed the costs so will seek to recouperate their investment. If we dont buy, and make it quite clear why we're not buying then UBI will make its drm less restrictive, e.g a simple, yet equally effective, online node locked activation. There is absolutely no need for an online connection during single player play - and you know it.

Either UBI will drop the always online DRM or our community is impotent. :wah:

How can you be using the board here and not have an internet connection ?

It's 2010 and we got out of the caves some years ago. Internet connection is like a TV - gota have it. It's needed to get mods, download tools (for navigation and manual targeting fx.), sending images to your famely, watching NFL by stream etc. etc.

THOUGH im not a fan, supporter or spokesman for the demand of SH-5 to be online all the time durring gaming - it really sucks bigtime.

But i still put my money up front to show my support of the coders of SH-5, whom undoubtly did not think up the constant online connection demand. Imo. we are not helping our selfs by not buying the simulator, on the contrary - low sales figures will have them abandon U-boat sims and not use any hours on patches, updates or add-on's.

A low sale on SH-5 and a high sale on other DRM products (which they will undoubtly have with other titles) will not help a lot on getting rid of DRM. If we want that we should keep constant pressure on UBI through the internet media. Like magazines, Testing sites, organisationel Spokesmens and perhaps even have a look at legal rights.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on my copy and to go through all the options, gameplay and such on my own instead of reading a lot of assumptions on this board. To many here with an opinion based on guestimes and rumor. It clutters up the few bare facts that ARE usable.

Here in Europe you have ADSL + telephone by 40€ to the month, in my opinion is reasonable for the majority of people

I do in home work for a major computer retailer/services company, so I'd like to think I've got something worth saying.

Here in Upstate NY, it's fairly easy to find folks on dial-up. Just drive thirty minutes away from the capital. There's no cable internet there... there's little DSL. Verizon's DSL can be notoriously unreliable in certain areas. Satellite internet is a joke.

How many of those folks are interested in Ubisoft's games? Probably not many. Is it worth alienating these folks anyway?

Well I'll respond in the terms/context of your analogy......I'd like to think all of this community could be catered for, including the elderly and infirm.

That is how it has always been in the past regarding access to sub simming releases.

To further respond to this: It would be a shame if a certain part of subsims community (including very talented modders!) would either go extinct or have to "live in habitats" (e.g. SH3 and SH IV). I don't want them to become Subsim Dodos! Imagine GWX with a harshly reduced number of staff. :nope: Not caring for the whole customer base is both hurtful for the game as such and for this community.

Didn't vote because there is no option to suit me.

I am opposed to Ubis ill conceived OSP but am still buying SHV. Im sorry for people who dont have a good solid connection, but in reality - my refusing to buy the game will not improve their situation.
Thinking long term, if we all boycott the last exisiting Submarine franchise, there may not be much of a community left here in a few years.

:hmmm: I would expect a more intelligent post from someone like you. I did not have internet at home from 2003-2008. At the time I was moving around a lot because of my work. Of course I could use the internet from the office, but my boss didn't allow me to play at work. In the evening I went to internet cafes, but I couldn't install my games there either.

I developed Sh3Gen without home internet. I uploaded my mod from the internet cafe, to my own internet domain.

So I must have been complete ignorant, since in all those years without internet I owned several 2000$ PCs, played hundreds of games (which included patching and modding them with files I had ignorantly copied on USB sticks and external HDs). I also managed to do all my work, which included programming two pieces of software, again copying stuff on USB sticks? Why didn't you tell me earlier?

It's not always a case of moving to somewhere without Internet...
1... People have Internet At work... not at home , no need at home due to having it at work...
2... My buddy spends his summer at his cottage. It's a 4 hour drive. No phone, no internet... and on a rainy day, people play games on the computer.
3... Once you're more than a few miles outside of some city limits you're back to dial up. I know people less than 5 miles from me right now that don't have cable or hi speed.
4... Poor credit can screw your internet hopes....

My brother lives just 75m down the road and is on dial up. I can't just lay a network cable down the road and for some reason they won't connect any more neighbors to DSL.

When you get right down to it... I don't want anyone else to miss out on the game experience just because I cannot get decent enough Internet to support it....
I don't want the Game franchise to fold.... I don't want the Modders and the people who support these games to lose interest.... I may not always have bad Internet... I may move... But not likely for a year or so...
So, play have fun, and enjoy...
At some point either the game will become accessible to me... either by DRM removing patches or whatever... or it won't. If it folds before I get to it, then too bad... But not a reason for everyone else to lose out...
I honestly see this game being one of the most pirated games out there within a couple of weeks. Ubisoft has set themselves up as the current Holy Grail of every hacker/script writer/kiddie/you name it out there...
In fact, hacking/pirating it may end up being more popular than playing it....Wouldn't that be ironic....?
When it's all said and done, it's just a game... and like I said in an earlier post, instead of buying the game... I spent the money on something else...
