If that is true, and I'm definitely waiting for the early buyers to confirm this, then I'll be jumping onboard.

The Steam version is a download version...and as Steam states, their download version DOES require permanent internet access etc. There's no reason to believe that different download versions would require different DRM stuff.

I,m going for the pre-order. I ordered 2 games download once. Swat 4 and dangerous waters. The problem was that when i got a new pc i had to go though all the trouble to get a new activation and i was unalbe to play it till then. It does indeed say "no need to be online to play". Gotta be an error from Ubi since it's outlined everywhere else that a connection is needed.

Oh no, I am not buying this on steam, I don't care if it comes out earlier, no way, never again!

I pre-ordered AvP 2 weeks before it's release, and I got it a day early.

The problem was the download time was so insanely long due to all the people downloading it at the same time, and the fact that you have to download every single file, that it took me 3 whole days to download it, that was with my computer switched on all through the day and all through the night. This problem was made worse by the fact the download decided on eleven occasions to just stop downloading and start from 0%. :shifty:

I urge you all to not buy from Steam, just wait the extra two days and get a retail copy. It's quicker and doesn't make you want to tear your hair out.

Firstly I downloaded Napoleon: Total War via Steam and never had it slow down, but keep in mind the download % bar in Steam doesn't like large files as it will reset to zero, but this is a UI issue.

Secondly, #$%#%! I wanted the box and whatever hard copy manual in the standard US edition, but the Gold edition has those extra units and art work for $10 more.

With the download version I'd still get it faster than Amazon could ever ship it...

I'd like to point out that DW was always a DRM-free game. Yep thats real gold customer service from Sonalysts (their long term support on the other hand wasn't nearly as good though).
Anyway, I've never understood the reason for buying a drm free game on a drm platform. I suppose you could still find the retail release of DW for less than 10 $ nowadays. And no steam, no activation c**p anywhere.

And another question is this - can these additional pieces of in-game content from the gold edition be purchased outside the game? Or are those of us not able or willing to buy the gold edition going to effectively get a stunted, crippled version of this product?

I think that the gold download edition has some exclusive game art in downloadable form. That doesn't appear to be aprt of the collector's edition boxed version, but it's all different, depending on what version you get and where you live. A bit of a minefield I think.

You do know that steam allows you to backup your games onsite, and that you can reinstall them on any computer don't you?

(you still need a valid steam account to run the games on that computer, but I've put my own backups on a friends computer to save him doing the download, he just had to buy the licence then reinstall 'his' [my] backups).

AS I am not buying the game until they extract there heads from there UBI's.....:damn:

minsc_tdp
02-26-10, 02:15 AM
I wrote the shSpeech voice command module for SH4. That should sum up my interest level in subsims.

Here's my completely honest answer on the DRM situation.

I will do my best to not buy SH5 until the price drops to under $20 on Steam. That DRM doesn't really affect me since I have an always-on, very fast internet connection and most likely wouldn't notice the very rare drops that I do get. Comparing any game stutter caused by that to the general crashes and problems (such as Ghostbusters NEVER working) and it's really not a big deal.

But in principal, I can't condone boosting their sales and buying early is what will do boost sales most. I feel a need to punish them based on what they're doing to folks less fortunate than myself in the bandwidth department. But let's be honest, I will eventually buy. My goal is just to put it off. I've got better things to do than play a video game anyway, I'm older, I don't have the fanboy gotta-have-it jitters. I'm patient. I'll play it next year if that's how long it takes, I don't give a sh*t.

This DRM is an UBI call, and I don't want to punish the dev team for it too much by pirating or waiting until it's being sold at $5, since they're not responsible and the entire sub simulation PC genre is an endangered species, and no matter HOW BAD A JOB they do, if we want the product and we ever want more like it, we have to give the SOME real money after all.

My intention is to ensure their sales figures are worse than SH4 and that the DRM is the direct result. The only way I can figure out to do that is to wait to buy. I bought SH4 on Day 1, so even though I'm doing my small part, it will hurt them a bit.

Of course, most importantly, if they realize they made a stupid mistake and patch out the internet connection requirement of the DRM, I'll buy *that very day*.

R-T-B

It's also on Stardock's impulse for those interested. Unfortunately, Stardock has the same DRM as anyone else.

Is it just me, or do read the word " unlocked " in Neals' post as suggestive that the DRM " feature " may be less restrictive than we have been expecting. Any possibility of this Neal or is my wishful thinking starting to show !!!
[ edit. Just went to the Steam site and I see that THEY use the term " unlocked " so that's where it comes from. Told you my wishful thinking distorted my understanding ! ]

Yeah, still waiting for mine. Guess they are extra careful with letting it go to early in case it gets cracked before release. It would be a big blow in Ubis face if it did.

Just a warning about buying on Steam (from my own personal experience)

If you buy SH4 on Steam, you only get updated to v1.3. They don't have the v1.4 update and there is no way to update it unless you buy U-Boat Missions (v1.5). The regular update (from UBI) doesn't work on the Steam version.

I had to buy UBM to get past v1.3.

So... if you buy SH5 on Steam, be warned that they might stop supporting the game before UBI does, leaving you in the dust when patches come out.

Exactly what bugs are those? We don't know anything about it yet.

Come on Steve you know better than that. In the history of the PC game there has NEVER been a bug-less game and probably never will be even with tons of mods. Chalk it up to human nature I guess.

But you bet your booty I'm going to be watching this forum like a hawk looking for its next prey....or seeing how many bugs SHV will have. :D

Oh, I completely agree. There will be problems, and they will fix what they can. That doesn't warrant calling it what he did. That implies it's not worth playing at all. I'd still like to know what bugs are so bad that it deserves that type of treatment.

No.

He mentioned that separately. He was talking about some in-game bug that he gleaned from the videos or something.

OKIE Dokie all is well now.

I'm German descendant but only know a few words Grandparents taught me.

Whew, thought I was going to have to take German speaking lessons there for a few minutes. :DL

Wonder if SHV gave out a warning curse.................OK,OK I'll think about buying it. Maybe?

Alright back on topic....now where were we?

OH yes SHV bugs. Well the bugs probably are appearing as I type for some of the guys already are playing SHV ( some of Europe's people anyway ) in a thread called " Got the Game today" Check it out. :hmmm:

I would have plumped for the D2D version, as i can store the game on my large USB drive. However, it is only available for purchase in the USA and Canada:down:. In Australia the retail version will be US$80 and the Limited Edition US$100 which sucks big time.

anyone know how much it'll be in UK on Steam please ?

was considering pre-ordering it on there if a good price - but there is no mention of price - just that its out in X days Y hours

best boxed price in UK I've found is about £22.90 I think :) so will probably go for that

prefer steam for convenience but not prepared to pay a premium

And that's precisely why I'd advise everyone to use Stardock's Impulse if they simply must have it digitally. It's a better service all around.

Did I mention that they have the gold edition? :)
Except that Stardock, like D2D (and I suspect Steam as well as they have not priced it yet), the digital dowload is not available to Australians.
We either have to order from overseas, which after conversion rates and shipping costs works out to be almost the same, we have to pay for the over-priced retail boxed version.
What gives with this?

Think ill stay clear of steam version for now, incase there is future issues with the large modding the community does here for its sims :D

I use steam but for this type of game I would rather not risk it with all the various changes one can make..

I must say with much sadness I will pass on SHV. I first have to upgrade my system, but I am not paying full price for a game I am actually renting. I rarely resell my games, but I should be able to, there are to many issues. What if I build a new computer, does the game transfer? Plus, I HATE the idea of being online when I don't want to be. My right. Pass...I am going to replay SHIII.:)

Even Neoqb took the complaints of it's players seriously with the online connection hassle for "Rise of Flight". Next update (1.011), due in a day or two will provide players the ability to play off-line. You will only need to connect to the master server to update your profile with regard to accomplishments, etc. Much better work-around:yeah:.

I suspect Ubisoft are going to be hit with a load of complaints come tomorrow (when "SHV" is released here), as early buyers may be hit with constant connectus interruptus. Call me a pessimist, but I won't be surprised:doh:.

This game will unlock in approximately 1 day and 12 hours

I just hope UBI will do the right thing and make SH5 DRM free with the last patch, just like they did with SHIV. When no more updates are being made for it, then most whom play it already have a legit install.

You know, as much as people like to beat their war drums about Ubi, they did removed the copy protection from SH3 and SH4 after they were in the market a while... :hmmm:

Not touching this turkey if Steam is involved. They suck. I had major issues with Steam with another horrible steam-related product; Empire Total War.

I'm not going through that again.

Australia can only digitally download via Steam or Gamersgate (every other site is region-locked). The game is, however in stores. I pre-ordered from EB Games (a splurge), but it won't be delivered until tomorrow...they screwed me on this one as it is in their stores, and has been for two days. With regard to Amazon, once conversion and shiping rates are brought into the equaition (not to mention the 10 day delay) it just isn't worth the angst. We don't have an Amazon.com.au...one day hopefully.

...

This is how my favorite developer of all times "Bohemia Interactive" handles it. Even ARMA 2 is DRM free now  Sweet!

...

Anyone here has an idea if there is a list on the web somewhere with games that have their DRM/protection removed by patches? I would like too see it, because I didn't buy many games because of their protections and if they are removed I might reconsider (plus, the price now is much much smaller for many of them since there are already a couple of years since first release). I know gog has a DRM free policy; I like to check their offer often.

Thanks!

The latest patch (1.011) for "Rise of Flight" now allows you to play offline:woot:.
You only need to connect to the master serever to upload your profile accomplishments while playing offline (missions, stats, kills etc) and for MP. It was the biggest request from the players and the Devs listened, as they always do. It is not so much a patch as a whole revision of the game. They are in constant contact with the gamers (via the Forums), as most of them play the game themselves online.
Makes a big difference when the Devs and beta-tsters are that hands-on.

Damn... I hadn't been following SH:V development close at all, but I was excited to fire up steam today and see it listed.. then I read this...

A PERMANENT INTERNET CONNECTION AND CREATION OF A UBISOFT ACCOUNT ARE REQUIRED TO PLAY THIS VIDEO GAME AT ALL TIMES AND TO UNLOCK EXCLUSIVE CONTENT.

Ok for that reason alone there is no way I will pay today's price, I will wait til it hits the bargain bin... then I read abit further....

UBISOFT MAY CANCEL ACCESS TO ONLINE FEATURES UPON A 30-DAY PRIOR NOTICE

Sooo.. what will I get from the bargain bin? a coaster?

UBi treats legit customers like we are all the criminals... had enough of them.

They won't be seeing any more of my money, SH IV was the last..

corporates don't bail out from merchandise. they sure will make a "From the people who brought you OSP Including all 23 Patches. Buy now!." Edition. 9.99 (like SH3 is now). deal!

Ubisoft titles do have reputation for dropping in price faster than any other big name Pub.

I was so excited to see a new Silent Hunter was going to be released. Then I read about the DRM ...

Also, do I understand correctly that this is what they will be doing to all their future products?

If so ... bye bye Ubisoft ... I'll find fun where it is.

I learned my lession with SOE and SWG. I no longer believe or trust any of them. I don't trust them to be there tomorrow, so if you can't sell it to me to use without outside crutches then I just flat out won't buy it.

[I wont buy anything that is on Steam ... they can keep out of my comp. Looks like Ubi might be joining their ranks.]

Steam or the DRM is not stopping me from buying this. All the complaints and bugs in the game are turning me off.

I have zero worries about buying through steam. Been using them for years and pretty sure they are not going any place soon. You have the option of saving to disk on any game you download. You can always download again, when something gets totally out of wack. With cable connections its a no brainer..no lines to wait in..always available.

Everyone is using this stay connected thing these days..last few games I am playing have it..RoF(which at least lets you play offline mode now), wings of Prey, Bad Company 2, heck I buy only games that have multiplayer in them anyways. I guess they want to make sure they can patch and sell DLC content to you as quickly as possible.

Obviously its not a piracy thing, they crack this stuff to quickly. So expect this in all games these days or get a console.. which by the way, will be connected to the internet to play..;)
