Ubi can offer a Diamond edition and I won't buy it with DRM.

I presume you do know that 'gold edition' means the game has reached its release state? :D

I'm more concerned with where this thread "may" possibly go.....:-?

"Gone gold" means it's reached it's release state and been sent to the manufacturers.

However, in this case Ubisoft is selling a "Gold Edition (http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/53280/Silent-Hunter-V-Battle-Of-The-Atlantic-Gold-Edition-Announced)" of SH5 complete with Draconian "constant grip" DRM, 3 unplayable U-boat skins you might possibly see, 4 "unique" ship models you might happen to bump into and some PDFs of a guide of some sort for $10 more than the $49.95 rental fee for the basic game. It's basically the Collector's Edition for the US without anything collectible.

That's 'gone gold', a bit different and refers to the CD master. I've always thought of Gold editions as generally coming out much later in a products life cycle and often package the original game with whatever expansions have been released. It is a little strange to see one pre-release. I suppose they can call it whatever they want.

I see this one includes a 'strategy guide', which in the old days meant 'the manual'. I've thought for some time the regular release will include more of the pamphlet type manual so as not to be so intimidating to the casual gamer.

I do believe that the author of the article in question might have made a mistake and mistook the 'collector's edition' (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/1121062387/m/2881074728/p/1) for the 'gold edition'. But I may be wrong.

Thanks for the link.
I'm tempted to get this one rather than ordering through Amazon just so I didn't have to wait for delivery. The UPS man is such a tease. But ordering through Amazon supports Subsim. Decisions, decisions...

How interesting. I'm looking at a box that says "Silent Hunter 5", and on the top in big capital letters it says GOLD EDITION.

And the link itself says "direct2drivecom/9213/product/Buy-Silent-Hunter:-Battle-Of-The-Atlantic-Gold-Edition-Download"

I don't do digital downloads unless it's Steam.

It's probably since you're viewing from outside the US, the Gold Edition is US/Canada only.

Or it might have to do something with the internet 'filter' here at my university. Facebook, YouTube, GameSpot and similar pages can't be accessed. I will have to look at the link when i get home.

So in other words, they are now calling the collector's edition - the gold edition.

Going with Steam is Helluva lot better than this DRM/OSP crap as it provides offline play.

I've never had a problem with digital downloads. I get all my Matrix Games titles that way and bought several through GOG.com and Gamersgate. Gotta keep backup copies, of course.

It looks like the Gold edition is a downloadable version of the collectors edition, minus the stuff that can't be downloaded.

I'd like to know how the "Gold Edition" (usually the main title plus the addon(s)) will be called in the US, now that they called this ... thing Gold Edition already.

Except for the part where they claim I'm outside of their support area, right in the middle of the US of A! I tried to download UBM, and it took me weeks to find out that they think I'm somewhere I'm not.

No, I don't like downloading full games anyway. Extra add-on stuff, sure. But I like to read actual paper books, and I like to look at the game box once in a while. And the manual, except they don't give out too many of those anymore.
