I was wondering. If you do the med campaign do you have to get through the gibraltar straight to get into the area operations? Or will you just change base like in sh-3.

For permit me to remark, i shall not risk my boat and my crew squeezing through such hazardous straight, with a man prone to tears :wah: amongst such tight groupings of contacts. :shifty: I shall be most sincerely concerned if you should be so circumstanced, as not to be able to undertake the execution of such a transfer, :nope: before my passing to the med!!! gulp  Good Day.

A loooooong time ago some info was given that you would be able to "unlock" new areas of operation. If that still holds and we are not talking about unlocking new quick missions I'd guess you unlock the med theatre by something and then have the ability to start from (a) port(s) there.
That said, even if we assume this is true for the final game (which is a pretty big leap given the age of that piece of info and the ammount of actual info we have on the game) the act of "unlocking" the above mentioned "new areas" of operation might be to break through Gibraltar. Would make sense. But I wouldn't bet on it.

After you get downed by charges, and after 40 hours of repair in the straight of gibraltar, you will surface.
During the surface manouver you'll get the special cry ability "not yet Kameraden, not yet".
...and the mission will always end with a massiv aerial attack while your home in port. Only the nazi cook will survive that onslaught of liberty.
On topic: It could be a nice feature to squeeze past gibraltar but I doubt it.
