Well, we've seen lots of opinions on here of late and you know it doesn't matter what those opinions are. What does matter is that if you were a long time lurker, that you took the time to sign up and post your opinion. Welcome aboard to all the new posters who were long time lurkers, of which there are a lot! May your posts continue and enrich the community ten fold and inspire us with new opinions. For those that are still lurking, say Hi! Once you've posted once there'll be no stopping you.

Ok, enough reading. start writing, on my part.

Im a almost 30-year old swede who has had a crush for military history for ages now (funny actuall cause Im all peacefull otherwise, perhaps its because I was a conscript in the swedish military and I belive we can all learn something studying the past, to better understand the future). Wow, thats a long sentence right there....perhaps its because its late and I just drank halv a bottle of wine?

Ehhh, without further adue (sp.?) I want to finish my non-lurker-status with:
1) Das Boot was a great movie!
2) I sure hope SH:5 will work on my laptop without internet 24/7! And I hope the game will add something more than just eyecandy and a static interior of the submarine. I saw the 'secret' sub-walkthrough, whats with the really depressed crew? Is that beta? Or should I as the kaleun pad their backs once every hour? Or had their french girlfriends just gotten their hair unwillingly removed by the resistance? Many questions linger, only the complete earthshatteringly review will bring us closer to the truth!

By the words of my beloved mother: natti natti

Neal has been riding them hard since he got the game. He's playing 24/7 and not let the crew rest since he got it. Constant diving, torpedo loading gunnery drills.

I was present while SH:3 was launched. I can remember some of u guys talking about submerging your feet in cold water to amplify the 'atmosphere'. Why not remove the time accelerator and not shave for
3 months? And your IRL crew-compartment should never se the light of day, live like a wampire. Imagine having absolute no privacy and getting depthcharged 15 hours straight while you cant do anything but try to cope with it?

Come to thing about it, why are we so fashinated about all this? 30000 submariners died a horrible death and at least as many on the allied side. Normal guys like you and me (no, mostly a lot younger) and they were only doing their duty to the country they loved (most were'nt nazists, but they were duped. Not really. When I look at the stats and see 200 'Captains' and 800 'Stowaways' reading the forums, I think "Who are all these people?" Don't they have anything to say?"

Then one pops in asking for help, and never posts again, sometimes not even answering the answers to say "Thank you".

I love talking to people, and if I'm in a conversation just knowing that there are dozens of people listening in, who may or may not have something worthwhile to add, makes me depressed. Maybe some of them don't have anything to say, but I'll never know, will I?

Nothing at all negative about being a lurker. I was one here once and am still on a number of other forums where my fat fingers haven't had the inclination to run away with themselves.

As to the fascination I'm not sure what drove me into subs. My Father was Navy but on Aircraft Carriers so I always had an interest in all things nautical. I guess when I was younger subs seemed cool because they could get around without being seen.

The historical side has always been an interest of mine and reading and learning about how things worked, why they were done and the motications behind the history as always been interesting to me.

Yeah, "lurker" in general usage in English does have a somewhat negative connotation. Not sure it's the same online, as "lurking" on an internet forum usually serves a useful purpose. It's really the only way to get a "feel" for a forum and its membership and code of conduct and in my experience most of the time people appreciate someone doing that before they start posting.

Anyway, I imagine everybody's done it - not every forum is one where you feel inclined to join in the conversation. Sometimes you just want a bit of info, and once you get it, you're satisfied and don't need to come back. I've lost count of how many such places online I've registered with over the years... no doubt most of them no longer exist!

Come to thing about it, why are we so fashinated about all this? 30000 submariners died a horrible death and at least as many on the allied side. Normal guys like you and me (no, mostly a lot younger) and they were only doing their duty to the country they loved (most were'nt nazists, but they were duped. "Man" may never change, but certainly individual people can and often do.

I don't know know why I personally find u-boats, etc., so fascinating... other than that, like you, I've always been drawn to history and military history in particular. Studying martial arts has made me even more interested in the "warrior" aspect of human experience, while at the same time giving me a way to express that same part of myself in a constructive way... and it's made me a much more peaceful and easy-going person in my life overall, much less likely to react with aggression when and where it's not absolutely necessary.

And like you I saw the movie Das Boot and was mesmerized by it and I think that experience made me want to find out more. Never thought I'd end up subsimming, but... there you go. :D

hmm, I still remember when I chopped lurkers as a paladin in Ultima Underworld I+II (published by the great Looking Glass Studios). but SubSim wouldn't do that to the "stow-away" at all, I guess.

was lurking myself for 2years when I had issues with SH3 stock-game. only when I tried GWX for the first time (3months ago) I felt the need to come out of the dark and to thank the people who created this brilliant work.

Normal guys like you and me (no, mostly a lot younger) and they were only doing their duty to the country they loved (most were'nt nazists, but they were duped.

I am one of the most pacific person you can think of.
But there is something glamourous about that U-boat craze.
The Germans, who were proud warriors and also were a technologically advanced nation, had an impressing range of weapons.
Even if we humans are mostly pacific in nature, there is still a warrior part in ourselves that can't help but shoot at an enemy,
- an enemy we think is responsible for our troubles -
and that we fear will invade our countries, loot our goods, rape our women etc..
(behind the smokescreen, we can see that we are also carefully being brainwashed in believing this by politicians/corporatists :hmmm:)

Hitler gave germany their pride again but his real agenda never became public). Learn from history, man never changes but hopefully were are more aware today

As i am an avid reader of alternative history, i would say i must agree.

- But it's like walking in a minefield for the man who dares to question this matter... -

One important part of making war, is the control of information...
and i would say we are all more or less 'victims' of this kind of weapon. :yep:

Sometimes i tell myself i should have a respectful thought for those
guys who courageously died (for real) in an horrible war that allows me
today to enjoy these games in front of my PC screen.

I've always liked simulator games. Began with flight sim (Airbus A320) and geoff Crammond's Grand prix on the Amiga. then i dicoverd Silent Service 2 and have been hooked on subsims since... :yeah:

I do play other games but they just dont last, I soon get bored and always find myself returning to my favourite simulators.

My top 3 games that I play regularly are :-

Silent Hunter 3 (GWX3, SH3Commander, Hitman optics. (100% realism, no map contacts).
GTR2. (I would play at 100% realism, but dont have a steering wheel and its imposible to control with gamepad without help options).
Flight sim X. (every setting on realistic).

We spoke earlier in the other thread. In 30 minutes we got 50 viewers, I care not about one reply and most members are sleeping currently. I will also ring their bell during waking hours. I am Subsims greatest "pop up" financially, and the only financial "pop-up."

If Neal gets only one donation it helps support SUBSIM.com so he can continue to fund the SH5 forum, as all the horse**** that forum produced never paid to feed the cattle.

Nope, there's nothing negative about the term, just one of those things that came to pass I guess. Like SailorSteve said, for every poster, there are 5 or so readers and more heads are better than one. I'm sure most who read the posts have an opinion, one way or the other and possibly has a great solution or suggestion to a topic, but we never hear it because it doesn't make it to the forum and stays trapped in their thoughts. Welcome aboard! I'm sure a lot of people would be very interested to hear about those experiences, if you'd care to share.

Well than its my turn I think. My name is derblaueClaus from Germany and I have been a lurker (till now of course ;)). I registred once to the Forum to download the excellent Trigger Maru-Mod. Your first post in three years. Thanks for posting and welcome aboard. I am the chief of the boat currently but used to be an officer. I have emotional issues I deal with which led to my downfall....
This is a great forum, and a professional one at that. You can receive all the assistance you require by asking.........Your experience also shows us that you have a lot to offer our members......

Welcome aboard "Mate", and the chief really ain't that tough, but I'll be lookin' you up in the payline.......:salute::salute::salute:

Thanks for the warm welcome and yes of course I would like share them although I have to admit that I was very, very young at this age and therefore don't remember everything very well from that time. Its a pity i cannot ask my grandfather anymore as he died 10 years ago. :(

Well I was gonna make a joke about everything being bigger down under...

No, no.... as an Aussie myself, my favourite reference to 'down under' was following Sydney hosting "World Youth Day" (apparently only for Catholic youth, so an odd term, and nice of our government to cough up a lot of $$ for it).

Anyway, the reference was on a t-shirt, with a picture of the Pope and a map of Australia. The slogan?

The Pope touched me down under

There you go: top that one..... :har:

p.s. ironic that a thread about lurkers is largely filled by people with 32,498 posts per year.....:D

Greetings all!

I've been lurking on the board for a couple of years. I know it's a shame...but I figured it's time that I finally take the minimal effort of registering.

I've been playing subsims since Aces of the Deep, and have fond memories of spending long hours playing that game on my first computer!

A couple of you guys need to talk to your IWOs -- too many of us sneaky types are getting by you! Maybe he needs some new binoculars hehe.
