Indeed. Nice recap.
Thanks for putting it all ine one place, very helpfull >(
Well from my point of view we do have the following :
1. water is not looking like it was advertised by UBI in the first screen-shots
2.water colour at depth is bright blue but above is greyish blue. Wtf?
3. we do have an inappropriate atmosphere in the game
4.VERY but VERY weak AI animations
5. ...and god knows how many bugs
I will still wait for the reviews and the final version but i don't think there is time for major changes.
with these i don't thing there will be a need for Ubi's DRM to keep pirates at bay. The pirates will simply ignore it :)

Water colour and quality is probably determined by the users settings and the power of their PC.
Commenting on the shade of blue is really nitpicking IMHO.
Weak AI? Do you have a copy of the game?
Bugs? Do you have a copy of the game to back this up?

Anyhow good job by the OP that must have taken a while to put together :salute:
It also shows that there is indeed quite a bit of stuff out there so all the whining about not seeing pre-release info can be squelched.

Say, does anyone have that video of the player who purchased the game, then tried to start the game without an internet connection?
Because, Gosh, -- it seems to be missing.
Good idea for a post. I admit I did click with trepidation thinking it was just another bash sh5 thread. It was so nice to see a comprehensive list of all available data we are lucky to have.
Then someone had to take a big crap on it.
Nice.

"The more bugs, things in the wrong places, wrong colours and whatever else, the more fun to the modders, the wider the modding community will be. And the more we have to dig into the files, the more we will discover to create new things and make it all a lot better altogether."

I dont think, we are pretending everything is ok, We all know there are issues and that not all of us are happy with some of the choices made, However, I seem to recall there being issues with the stock sh 1 - 4 when they were first released as well, So I think we are just trying to be positive and look at the plus's of SH5. Im sure once the modders have finished with this sim it will be stunning, as am sure it will be very enjoyable when we first get it.
I admit Ive done enough of my own moaning when it comes to Sh5, manly regarding a certain --- , But ive made my choice on that and am now looking to the future, NO SH5 is not going to be the perfect sim we have all wished for. Yes there are going to be errors, Yes there will be issues with crashes, as there is on every pc release out there. BUT I am certain that once it is modded, its going to be the best SH version we have ever have. But this time im not looking at it as a sub sim, Its a sub Captain sim, Hence different ways of doing stuff, and for that alone Im excited.

1) Compare stock SH3 to SH3 fully modded to nowdays mods.
2) Apply the same effect on SH5.

OK better said than my long post, But Yes, Thats the point I was trying to make, Stock Sh3 was ok but Buggy, think we all can agree on that, Sh3 fully modded = WOW, Great sim
Stock Sh5 - Going to be buggy, but good, same as all pc games.
SH5 Fully modded = WOW Amazing sim.
Its gonna happen, Just going to take time. But when it does, Damn if its going to be worth the wait.

SH5 is almost as good as SH3 fully modded, as from what we saw so far. Great graphics, and less buggy then stock sh3 was.
SH5 after modded like SH3 was, there is really no comparison. Its just a whole new level of sim.
If sh5 is going to be greatly opened for modding like the devs said, there is virtually no limits on what we can do with it. We can actually make sh5 look better then sh6, way before its launched.

And thats the exciting part. OK until we get our hands on it and see if they are telling the truth about the modding we wont know for certain. BUT if it can be modded, as a starting base Sh5 is going to be great. After our amazing modders do their magic, Well It just might, Just might end up as that Sim we dream about.
As I said in my first post, we are not ignoring the faults, we know they will be there and yes there may be problems for some. Now is the time for looking at the positives, and there are quite a few.

Yes there is that issue, BUT the programmers have told us all that this sim is more moddable than SH3 and 4, OK we wont know if they are telling the truth until we get it, But Im willing at the mo to be postive with SH5. By all means tell me in March I told you so, But hopefully it wont come to that, and we will all be pleasantly surprised.
Yes, I hope they come to reason and use the resources to do a WORKING thing
1.) Build a content server
2.) Give the Modders access
3.) Have GWX SHV or such great MODs as DLC
4.) support your customers to the max!
Bind your customers with POSITIVE forces and NOT with restrictions!

Cowboy, maybe you could pull your head out of ubisofts hind end and think about this
February 2012:
"Ubisoft Management announces that they will no longer be providing free support for the playing of Silent Hunter V. For a small monthly fee, you may continue to play Silent Hunter V on a subsidiary's network servers or YOU MAY UPGRADE TO SILENT HUNTER VII for a one-time fee of $49.95. Ubisoft regrets this decision however current economic models prohibit the further continuance of player support directly from Ubisoft. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Thank you,

Looking at Ubisoft's history; I suspect they'll just disable authentication down the road. Both Far Cry 2 and Silent Hunter IV got patches to remove the disc checks, as well as server authentication for new game installs. To do something like above will only be bad news for them; it won't actually increase sales (anyone wanting SH VII will buy it without that kind of pressure) and generate a public outcry without any benefit.
I suspect at this point you're frothing at the mouth to say that this DRM is doing the same, but it's not, really. Piracy is (or at the least is perceived as, but probably really is) a major problem for developers, and they suspect this DRM will help protect their investment and sales base. It's not the best solution for any of us, but we'll need to let them try it and see it won't work, then they can try something else.
Also, the server doesn't get used to do any processing; it's just a handshake. Your computer will continually send messages asking for a "Hey are you there, server? Is this game registered?" and the server will say "Yeah I'm here the game is registered!". That takes up a bare minimum of bandwidth and server cycles. That said, you might see them stop offering the savegame-cloud storage, as that will eat up very real space. Remember, the goal of DRM is to limit the impact of day-zero/one piracy (and month one); after that it has a much smaller effect on things.
/rant
So this looks pretty damn cool; I rather like the new moving-about-the-sub thing they have going on (actually seeing it in action in some of those videos). I joined the series at SH4, so having that kind of immersion would be really neat. I also like the conversation concept, as I don't think I'll feel so much like a one-man-crew, which gets a bit tiresome in SH4.
I think I'll need to grab me a new VGA for this though, and maybe a new CPU/Mobo to eek all the bells and whistles out.

After the first handshake of "Am I legal?" that answer isn't going to change, therefore it doesn't need to be constantly asked. Once you're 18 you're 18+ forever. :) I'm cool with a one time online reactivation. Even having to do that on each computer I install it on. But this.. bah.
If their servers aren't there to redundantly declare you legal then you can't play. I've been spending a lot of time on Ubisoft's website today and 3 times pages timed out. That's three times my game would have stopped. How that's acceptable to ANYONE is beyond me.

Ubisoft's forums are horrible; the server keeps bombing while I try to look up IL-2 mod threads :(
I used to push the "their servers will be stable, stop being silly" angle but their website performance has not been stellar of late. We'll see.
I don't disagree with your point, and I could survive with a single authentication -- or even a system that has to have one authentication a week (or month or what have you). The threat of having my games bomb because Comcast hiccups is an annoying thought, though.
I don't know how it works, but I'll be that once the Scene figures out how to forge one of those handshakes, they'll forge them all and the point will be moot. It will be really interesting to see how long the DRM remains uncracked.
On another topic....
Has anyone seen the API for modding? I know people were saying this is supposed to be wildly moddable; I'd love to know if the system has been revealed yet, and what our modders' thoughts are.

Its probably rather simple to cheat the drm :D
All one needs "maybe" ;) is to use apache server on your client and re-route the check to your own server :D
The problem with this is not the being able to do it, but the farce everyone would have to go to installing apache etc and making sure it was all running right..
As I said its not hard but just annoying..
I know this method works for server authentication ive seen it done on other games/applications.. its just wether people want to bother to make the work around.

the screenshots showing all the dialog mode boxes popping up due to lost internet connection and all are pefect sources of information! Doing a DUMPBIN on some files will show which ones are using the windows API dialog boxes (along with other useful info). Then those files can be searched for strings (probably unicode) using your favorite disassembler (but more than likely they will obfuscate the file(s) and make it a little more challenging :yep:). Then those addresses can be searched for references. Then...well eventually if you know what you're doing then ET doesn't have to phone home anymore ;)

Full german voice acting is in the game, but you can't choose it as an in-game option - you have to choose which voice files to put in when installing.
However the german voice acting sounds rather fantastic to me. Leaps and bounds above SHIII. The sound design is much more thorough this time, and while mods will help it, it really will help the game's immersiveness a lot as it is.
