View Full Version : New Q&A + 5 out of 7 unique skins
17.02.2010
Will it be possible to improve the diving methods for example in previous versions of the game one could hardly change depth at low speed while with use of the ballasts one actually shall be able accelerate the depth change without increasing the propeller power.
The “diving officer” logic in the game actually uses more ballast or compressed air when depth changes cannot be achieved easily by dive planes – like for example when there’s not enough forward speed. However, direct control to the ballast tanks is not given to the player in the release version of SH5.
Are the 7 extra skins that come with the collector edition only available in the Campaign or also on Multiplayer?
The customized ships are only available in the Campaign and they are non playable. They act as elite AI units in the dynamic campaign (including the U-boats).
By the way, find below a sneak preview of five of the seven exclusive skins (3 submarines & 4 ships) coming with the collector:

Sounds perfect to me. Thanks for posting Thor. BTW where did you get this from?

Now we see the skins stuff from the collectors edition... not even playable, such useless stuff... probably the only thing worthy in that tin box will be the maps. Other than thar... :nope:

This is how it was in every SH. You could slowly change your depth when stationary, the almight "diving officer" logic at work I guess.
It'll be a new thing when you can order, "keep forward ballast tanks half full, so we can dive much quicker in case of air attack", or balance the boat with aft ballast tanks, we're flooding fast in the forward compartments!..

Look on the bright side, at least they're not marketing a collectors edition with:
EXCLUSIVE CONTENT!!!!
+5 Torpedoze of Almighty Explodiness!!!
Ancient Mariner's Cap of TrueSight!!!
Doenitz's Favorite Soup Recipe!!!

Oh, I see. Now the original question makes more sense to me.

Do you mean that we should feel satisfied in knowing that Ubi's only going to bring a game manual and a so-called "official guide" (that we all should get :hmm2:), the game's soundtrack (that anyone's actually able to extract from the game files if needed), a few skins - that will soon be available for free (even though that will be in an illegal way :hmmm:) - and iron box to those of us who're gonna spend 20 € more buying the collectors edition of the game ? :o

Yeah but you get an iron box. Mine will be plastic. Come on, it is all worth it! I think.....iron box....well....no so much....I guess.... But yeah, you get an iron box. Personally I think the skins for the special edition is not warranted. Extra actual material like pictures or better map, etc. is.

I read this (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/special-edition-article) a couple of weeks ago. It's a good/interesting article about special editions, and seems sort of relevant to the discussion.

Being a modeler myself, I would have modeled the wells for the anchors on that Nelson BB ship, abit more rounder. :hmmm:

A little paint and some decals and I have a Collectors Edition case and crackers to eat too ! :p2:

and anchors are always rusty :yep: from being used ya know .
Can u imagine how many people here would have bought a collectors edition for extra cash if they had included plastic slide rules for working out firing solutions and other data. Another version and another wasted opertunity.
Sometimes i think publishers never listen, if they are gonna bother with collectors editions then why dont they actually include stuff that we really want.
Perhaps Silent Hunter 6 lol

Interesting, thanks for sharing. I usually avoid SE/CE, unless it's a good deal, and unfortunately SH5 is not. I picked up SH4 CE on release for around £17.00, now compare that to the £30 for SH5 (reduced from £39.99 on Amazon UK). The funny thing is, the SH5 CE contains nearly the same content as the SH4 CE, yet is almost double the price!
It's a pity, I would probably have picked it up for £17.00, DRM aside it does seem like an interesting game. But I'm not paying £30, not with all the uncertainty about their current system. If and when the price is reduced, and if and when we have more info on the game itself, then I might buy it. But not before.

It's a fact of gaming life these days that publishers always produce 'exclusive' versions that offer nothing more than a few different skins.
They do it because there are always enough idiots out there who are far more interested in how it looks than how it plays.
There's a plethora of them for Empire Total War, for example. They sell a few 'elite units' with new skins while failing to address the glaring problems with the game. The real joke is that modders have already created a bunch of extras units for free.
When enough people will pay money irrespective of quality, quality is the first thing ditched in favour of quantity. Why? Because quantity is easy and equates to $$, while quality is difficult and unnecessary with an undemanding market.

There's probably a very small contingent of people that:
1.) Play the game hardcore enough to warrant use of a slide-rule
2.) Can use a slide rule
3.) Want a slide rule

Excuse me for being confused but, the term
"skins" refers to skins=coatings (as we all know) or skins=ship models?
I am asking because I want to deside what to buy. The collectors edition costs some 75E while the plain 39E. This is too big a diffrence and needs a very good reason!
Thanks!

EDIT: I thought coatings...but this is not what the second Q&A on page 1 implies...so now, I have no idea either.
If they're models, it could make modding tricky - not everyone will have them...that may create issues in campaign modelling. :hmmm:

I'm fairly sure 'skins' in this sense means new graphic schemes for the warships, e.g. if you see a destroyer and it's got a green camouflage, instead of grey, then you know it's an elite unit.

Those special skins don't look so cool, they should compare them to stock I guess. Pluss most ships only had certain paint jobs at certain times, so I can skip the entire CE forever.
I can even imagine ingame advertiseing now,
Your Walking the docks and guy in a long coat walks up to you......
"Pssst...Hey....You.....You want the new Type IX ?
It's yours for $19.99, Cammo paint scheme is just $2.99 extra.
I'll even through in Bernard for free... just visit UBI.com for details."

I want a slide rule :yeah:
although i never used one, but if it was included in the game (collectors ed.). Im sure there would be instuctions on how to use it.
and if your one of the people that isnt hardcore, wouldnt want to learn how to use or wouldnt want a slide rule then you could buy the regular version. me i'd def buy the collectors edition if it had things like slide rules and other tools that would make your game more realistic.
Or even red light bulb, life jackets, buckets (so someone could throw water at you. lol) etc. :har:

It would appear that the US & Canada will get a "gold edition" in the form of a downloadable purchase containing the 7 ships/skins & a pdf version of the "official guide" via the ubistore (http://digitalstore.ubi.com/178/9213/product/Buy-Silent-Hunter:-Battle-Of-The-Atlantic-Gold-Edition-Download)
The official guide according to the blurb runs to about 110 pages.
On the subject of price in the UK Amazon recently dropped the price from £40.99 to £30.99 which is not too bad for the colectors edition, especially when you consider the original Silent Hunter released over ten years ago cost £50 on release. I think we must be prepared to pay a bit more for our niche genre games these days. PC games are still much cheaper than their console cousins.
