GALESBURG —
Howard Benthine was not even 19 years old when he killed another man for the first time.

“I grabbed him by his head and snapped his neck,” the 84-year-old said. “You know, you live or you die.

“It was him or me. I did what I was trained to do.”


ends with


Benthine faces cancer with the same attitude with which he faced war.
“We’ve had a hell of a good life. An outstanding life.”

No they're not. I have two students fresh from the Afghan battlefields and both of them are barely into their 20's.
