The Polish games site "Gram.pl" has a 3 page preview of SH5, read the "googledegook" translation of it here (http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=pl&tl=en&u=http://www.gram.pl/art_9wfiGu4_Silent_Hunter_5_beta_test.html&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&usg=ALkJrhjxREUfngNFUf76YCjR-uVlpugAAA)

SH5 is reaching new, uncharted levels of realism. :arrgh!:

Well the translation is pretty bad but this build looks like a real FAIL to me. The gun crew underwater is straight from SH-3. Did SH-4 do this (I never owned it)?

Yes, it's a major complaint in SH4 as well.
But SH5? Hey, you wanted to see flooding in the submarine, didn't you?

Thanks for the link.
The google translation is hard to follow but the reviewer mentions many historical mistakes, graphical and AI issues, overall quite a few bugs. We expected those anyway :DL
I just hope sooner or later they're patched and mod tools are very very capable.
He also mentions, "No way to shuffle the crew around", I'm hoping this is not the case. Because the one eyed pirate wasn't at the CR, and there was a new face there :06:

Me??? I never wanted to see it. I just wanted it simulated in the damage report. I wanted them to focus on the simulation part of the title not the graphics. I lose.

Same here, actually. I didn't mean you directly, I was writing generically to all the folks who say they do want that.
I'll take AOD with modern graphics any day of the week.

To me it is quite not understandable to send preview versions like this to the press... I mean... who will buy a game which is half finished?
To me the new approach of RPG elements looked quite interesting but some things canīt be oversighted.

When you send previews to the press, it backfires.
I mean honestly, its the press, thier job is to change thier articles till it sounds good.
I won't read anything from the press, unless its neal stevens, cause he could start a publishing company based off the stuff we write.

Actually, previews have to be conducted on the unfinished versions of the game, but a responsible journalist should not post a bug list or play test report in a preview. He can state the overall state of the build, but should stress, it is an unfinished game build.

this is the great new fully dynamic campaign, dude...no reason to be scared.

i am more scared of an autistic crew, muted and frozen in repeating moves...

Major error: A screenshot showed a map of northern europe, where "Norway" was a label placed over the country of Sweden. Tsk. :timeout:
The country label "Norway" really must be moved more to the left, just beside the coast to the Atlantic ocean.
Also, I think the country label "England" should be changed to "Great Britain", because it includes Scotland and Ireland. I suppose that even this might be wrong. The people who live there ought to know what is correct though.
I thought that this screenshot looked very nice, with the background included.

Understatement of the year!
The last 3 games i bought just sit on the shelves, the buggyness of modern game development is horrific. I hear the death toll of the PC Game industry:nope:

It seems the whole 'dynamic campaign' stuff turned out to be a set of scripted missions, a-la SH2.
I recall the producer of SH3 saying he wanted to have a campaign setup similar to this. After much protest on this site it was changed.
Sadly it appears that this has idea has not gone the wayside. Canned missions suck

Where exactly do you get this idea from? This question came up several weeks ago, and Dan answered that this campaign would be truly dynamic, with the enemy actually able to respond to your actions. How does that translate to "canned missions"?

Yeah, apparently it seems that the average internet person may possibly look like he can usually whip generalizations out of thin air. As a rule.

It's not safe to hope for the best without preparing for the worst, Neal.

"Hope for the best, expect the worst, and take what you get with a sense of humor" is my motto. Well, one of them at least.
But criticizing something that has been categorically denied by the lead developer? I'd still like to know where you got this "information" from.

Are we talking about the same thing? Cuz I'm talking about a computer game.

Yeah same thing. When I'm huddled in my bunker after the collapse, you're damn right I want my computer games with me. And plentiful means to protect them from those who foolishly failed to prepare.:yeah:
I purposely used "seems" and "appears" because I'm not sure. These are the impressions I am getting from what I have seen.
What exactly does Dan mean by dynamic? Same map with different spawn points, shipping routes? How many, how big is the map? The Atlantic? Local region only? Do I have to start with the same mission every time? You may be okay with certain design decisions in this regard, but I may not be.
I have a lot of questions and few answers just regarding the campaign and mission structure alone, never mind other issues like obvious bugs. These screens raise more questions for me and a lot of concern.
And yes it's a preview build.
I'm sorry you feel that I'm dumping on the game in my earlier post. That wasn't my intention.

Well, since you are privy to information we are not, maybe you could clear up some of this speculation instead of continuing to make vague statements. ;)

If I was making a submarine game that included that branching campaign picture meaningfully, it would mean that I would have each box be a "scenario." Each scenario would differ by the traffic both random and static and where the player was situated. I would allow the whole world to be in use since that is the easiest situation to code for; same chess board, new moves.
If I would hazard a guess at SH5's reality I would say it is probably a "branching tree of SH4 like patrol-worlds." Something like "you start in 1st flotilla in 39 and if you do well you move on to l orient in 41" or whathaveyou.
Also, I think the country label "England" should be changed to "Great Britain", because it includes Scotland and Ireland. I suppose that even this might be wrong. The people who live there ought to know what is correct though.
lol, yeah I know I few "Scots" that will be pissed off that their Country is now called "England" on that map lol......

Me too. Here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162005
That was a God Awful review. It seems they were reviewing a Beta version of the game, and still listed the bugs that most likely have been (hopefully) dealt with for the final development.
This was not helped by the lousy translation (though it was head and shoulders better than the ones Google gives me for J rock lyrics)
But frankly I don't think this review is worth the paper it would have been written on. It didn't even really finish.
Did anybody even notice that the boat in dock is a type VII A? I think that is pretty impressive.
The dynamic campaign pic did cause me to pause, I can only hope this is not some damned scripted thing like Sh2. That to me would be steps backwards.
