Well to be honest, at this moment and time, you can run XP and never upgrade your OS. XP, after the patches and services packs, is a solid OS with features that cater to "most" PC users and gamers. Yeah you dont have the fancy Direct X 10/11, but SH3 runs DX 9 so we are good.
I have been playing this game for under a month and I can tell you that I will keep playing for a long time. I may even just use an old server pc laying around in my basement just so I can run XP and continue to play this great game.

A great many years into the future I hope.
A great many years into the future I hope.
Without a doubt!
It is the best U-boat game available with GWX and SH III comdr installed.
The only complaint is with UBI not figuring a way to have wolfpack attacks.
Even my ancient CAoD had great pack attacks.
But this is old news.:DL

Thanks to last year's netbook craze, Windows XP will be supported on a limited basis for at least a decade, IIRC. Well if not, just keep a legacy computer for yon favourite classics like some do.
I'm on a 5 year old core duo PC and it still does manage to run titles like Fallout 3 with decent FPS, so I'm not complaining. Little need for me to upgrade to bloatware.

This sim is a keeper and when my PC is ready for the Davy Jones locker, it will be replaced to be sure, but this PC and OS and sim will be kept in mothballs. I should have retained old PC's for other sims as they could have been part of a 'legacy gaming room' in the house!! a PC for each legacy game. :har:

People have complained that Aces Of The Deep and Silent Hunter 1 won't run on XP. Some folks suggest DosBox for that problem. Some suggest just buying an old computer for $10 or $20.
What I'm saying is that ten years from now you'll be able to pick up a PC that will run SH3 for very little money. Or just keep the one you have when you buy your next one. I see not problem here.

Don't any of you OWN your OS ?
This is such a no-brainer I wonder why it's brought up on THIS website. :har:

keeping an "old operating-system" to play SH3 for long into the future seems mandatory to me. XP turns out to be the best gaming platform for me. though I had planned to install a new rig in order to be able to play SH5, I postponed the buy of new hardware as I won't be connected to UBI permanently.
therefore atm I stick to my single-core system and be happy with it. :D

Someone should reverse engineer it, or adopt the concept to a open source 3D engine.
