Light a cigar, pour a brandy, read a book and relax while Ubi tries to connect you to the Game Boss. :D

get wasted then you see permanent smoke screen.. cigar or no cigar :rotfl2:
no seriously, did they say anything about it?

i mean, sh3 is great, sh4 is good, but playing without smoke screen that was important or even the most important part in naval combat, it is a bit silly?
then it is the wind? then the sea conditions?
fuel consumption, flanking the convoy, got caught in ship battle but cannot see s..t because of the smoke screen.. then some ship accidentally gets blown away because the wind blew off the screen.. and you realize in the dark its your team hurting.. etc.
ideas ideas.. you know all that stuff you imagine when you read about those battles..
any news abotu stuff liek that?
or just plain march..

The AI would be able to see through it anyway...

pour that brandy in your monitor and you will see the most realistic smoke screen ever, complete with smoke smell :D

I've read a few books on the subject, and I don't think I've ever read of a submarine laying a smoke screen.

I also don't recall ever reading of an escort laying a screen to hide a convoy from a submarine.

I wish I could remember where I read this, but there was some mention in a book about a sub or U-boat slipping away in the diesel smoke of its engines.

Though if you're a sub and your engines are smoking enough to provide you some cover, I'd think something was wrong with them.

i recall something about the combination of diesel smoke mixed with light fog masked the escapae of a uboat but my memory is fuzzy

I would also think that a submarine producing that much diesel smoke would be easier to follow, not harder. Harder to see from behind, yes, but easier to keep track of while waiting for reinforcements.

I read it here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=1212101&postcount=29). If it was mentioned in "Iron Coffins" and "Das Boot", then it must be fact.

The AI would be able to see through it anyway... You can perfectly well design AI that ignores contacts on the other side of obstructions. Games don't have to be SHIII where battleships spot you through mountains.

Not a UBOAT story but in Richard O Kanes book CLEAR THE BRIDGE he mentions enemy escorts attacking the cloud of smoke with guns left by his diesels, instead of the acutal boat.So it helped save the Tang when under fire.

it was so sad that the AI couldnt see any land and ships would run aground all day long.

i even used it a few times to cheat by getting spotted on purpose to let them run aground coming straight at me then i was free to do whatever i wanted while they just sat there.

they could see other ships but not a huge island? come on UBI i hope you fixed that this time.

If Silent Hunter is moving more to an add-on/DLC model, there's a greater chance of these sort of improvements than the sequel model. With add-ons, the orginal game benefits from the new funtionality and bug fixes of add-ons whereas they don't with sequels.

In Janes F/A 18 ships would sail right up to the land, and then just keep plowing on over it. I once followed a destroyer half way up a mountain.

:)

OK.. I didnt even consider submarine in the smoke screen story.. but that would make the game more real..
and it would be useful for some mods..
but, yes.. I am talking about something "far far away from the galaxy" in terms of ai when you have ships smack into the island.. :)
and from what I ve read so far that sh5 is going to be a bust.. better to delay it and make it better than to release this "if I heard it it might not be true, but damn, if it's true, it's bad" thing
