A lot of folks have made a principled decision to not buy it with DRM. I don't think previews or mod discusssion will sway them. If the DRM goes away, they'll happily jump on board.
The nitpickers, I think, are a relatively small bunch. I think they'll likely will go ahead and buy the game anyway.

i bet the people on the Titanic said the same thing when they watched those silly people get into the lifeboats just because the ship bumped something.
EDIT: I'll answer here since the thread has moved on, by nitpickers i mean those who question things and not just ignore them and only see things they like. another way to describe nitpicking is to notice what isnt done correctly

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. By 'nitpickers', I mean the folks that greet every screenshot with cries of "epic FAIL!!" Do you mean to say those folks are ones seeing things clearly and taking to the lifeboats and those trying to see the positives are the ones foolishly going down with the ship?

 As we have seen over the years here at SS, the creative juices just can not be stopped. It will not stop with SH5. SH5, although arcade like, has the most potential for modding (per the developer) and DRM is not forever.

02-17-10, 08:46 PM
That makes sense. It may have to miss x number of checks in a row to trigger whatever timeout process this has. At least that indicates that a momentary loss of connection doesn't boot you off.
Odd that the AC2 reviewer had a different experiance. I'm glad tho, unlike us, the twitch gamers actually matter ($$).

My guess would be that the game checks every x seconds for a connection. The AC2 reviewer unplugged his at (x-1) seconds, and Neal unplugged his at (x+1) seconds. No proof, nothing but speculation here.

I didn't see Neal sign in (although admittedly I couldn't make out much of the blurry screen). :hmmm:
If Neal didn't sign in, then he does not have the full DRM/OSP.
FWIW Settlers 7 behaves much like Assassin's Creed. So it seems odd to me then that SH5 would be substantially different to what Ubisoft is telling us. Or more to the point, it seems odd that Neal's copy behaves differently than what other previewers have experienced with SH5. :hmmm:
Honestly, I'm not sure what the demonstration proves, other than that Neal's particular preview copy plays fine without internet connection. Indeed, in much the same way that bugs in preview copies are usually not reported (at least by Neal) as they are not considered reflective of the final product and thus potentially misleading, I think copy protection behaviour should be suppressed for the same reason.

A demonstration of magnificent marketing from UBI.
We don't know what kind of protection the game has, we don't know the real requirements and how it works.
The explanation from them: "We don't want to give the hackers a head start"
For one thing they're not called hackers, they're called crackers. And don't be so funny, those kids will discover how the system works in a matter of minutes, no matter if you give them the tiny bity information you have. Security by obscurity. It has never worked. :nope:

Yes, that is possible and I tried really hard to make that very clear in the info about the video:
This video demonstrates the game being loaded, and then cable disconnected, The game continues uninterupted. This is a preview version, and I have been assurred it has the same OSP as the final version. However, when the game is released, I will be reviewing a store-bought copy as well as the review copy sent to me by Ubisoft, and if the game behaves any differently, I will add comments here and in the Subsim forums, as well as my review. It is not my intention to coax anyone into a different point of view about DRM (not in YouTube, anyway). I just wanted to report it as I see it.
A demonstration of magnificent marketing from UBI.
We don't know what kind of protection the game has, we don't know the real requirements and how it works.

Indeed, and thanks for letting us see the result. I'm beginning to wonder if it checks once on sign in, and not thereafter. The connection being used to verify on load, and then again when saving your games. But as you say, until the retail product is available, we don't really know what their system does.
If Assassin's Creed 2 is anything to go by though, I'm worried. It uses the same OSP (apparently), and several previewers have said that it instantly kicks you from the game when your net is disconnected.
Yes, that is possible and I tried really hard to make that very clear in the info about the video:
You could use Fraps to record the login or start-up of the game and then switch to your external camera view showing the disconnect in progress.

Thanks, producer :haha: But Fraps does not record anything for me until a game starts. Of course, I may not be using it right (likely), or it could be that by using a legit and paid for version of Fraps, I am missing some of the neat features to be found in the millions of illegal copies. :O:

See I'm just confused, and that's not good.
Some SH5 previews said, a message box came up on Internet disconnection, and you had to save and drop to desktop.
You demonstrated a minute of disconnnected play.
Assansins Creed preview said much more grim stuff.
So what do I know? I know a connection is needed ok, but how critical is it for SH5 to continue playing. Can an hour of disconnection be ok? What happens when the application says "ok enough disconnection", do I get to save? See lots of questions :DL Oh well we wait...

Download what you need. :yeah:
Captured this Yahoo page using "Capture".
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y116/oleman/YoNeal.jpg
A very useful tool sometimes. TheCapture camera icon is shown here as a "Camera Flash" on the task bar ( third icon from left ). Normally the icon just looks like a camera. When you boot up your computer the "Capture" icon is located with the other icons on your desktop, just click on it and it will stay ( until reboot or you remove it ) in bottom task tray.
You may pick one of his newer ones as mine is from Win 98 and works like a charm..........If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :arrgh!:

Very cool:yeah: You know, you can dismiss that PT Boats banner if you choose, by clicking on the red X.
Well, I have thought about Win 7 but I will probably wait until Win 9. After all, XP is only 10 years old, and it still works perfectly, specially with all my old games.
And I hear migrating from XP to 7 is sheer work.

I can't speak for installing Win 7 on a machine that was previously running XP, but my new rig has Win 7 on it and I haven't run into any problems, aside from the SH3/Starforce deal. I just went and spent the $10 to get the Steam version of SH3 and all is well. All my printers/cameras/etc work fine.
7 takes a bit of getting used to, but it's fine by me so far.

And I hear migrating from XP to 7 is sheer work.LOL, I hear you, felt the same way for awhile. But I've upgraded two machines from XP with no issues at all and very little work, a 3rd from Vista and my laptop from Vista also. If you have the newer hardware it really blows XP out of the water. My gaming rig- EVGA 790i FTW, Core2Quad Q9550 @3.83, EVGA GTX295 191.07s, 2x150gb WD Raptors, 2x200gb SATA, 8gb G.Skill DDR3 1600, OCZ 700W PS, HP DVD-RW, Onboard sound, 32" Sony Bravia XBR, Win7 Pro 64bit, Tai Chi watercooled case really benefits from the extra ram and the multicore CPU with a 64bit OS really can't compare to what XP had to offer. All IMHO of course but I don't regret switching and haven't run into any issues with any of my games so far. For older games I've run all the Total War series, UFO:ET, and IL-2 is still played 3x/week with my squad and they all perform better than I remember with XP. But I'm a tinkerer when it comes to computers and like a challenge every now and then. :D

I recently upgraded straight from Windows XP (sp3) to Win 7. It was a tremendous pain in the arse and I nearly blew a blood vessel... until I figured out how to make it easy.
The OS is extremely sensitive for some reason to the type of DVD used for the install. Use the wrong format, and fail - it is quite maddening.
If you burn your ICO or install files onto a DVD+RW, you should do just fine. DVD+R format may work. DVD-R will fail.
Once installed, Win 7 is groovy. You can ensure backwards compatibility with a simple right click - including XPsp1, XPsp2, XPsp3, Win 95, 98, NT, 2000, etc.
Dangerous Waters works fine. SH4 works fine. I like the new OS.

agreed, but i do have an issue or two with win 7
i have a habit of swapping out my desktop image about once a week so its something different but with win 7 every time you change your desktop image it resets all your window color and transparency settings and it removes your screen saver too so you have to redo all those anytime you change the desktop. its total nonsense to have this happen because they all have nothing to do with each other.
you also have no way to adjust the amount of space used for system restore or be able to turn it off to clear it in case of viruses or leftover crap in old restores. i can live without control over the size of the restore files but i should be able to delete old restore files that might have sleeper viruses in them at my control and not have them perminently saved until one day when it finally gets removed or replaced.

Anyway, some small things point that this is a beta version. The release version will have some of them fixed (not all bugs of course) and the crew will be more talkative IMHO. Other than that, promising stuff in there, lots of opportunity for modding too..

Actually you're wrong, FRAPS does capture desktop video if you have the latest version and select "Monitor Areo Desktop" it will work fine. I just did it to make sure I was remembering correctly. I'll post it if you don't believe me. ;)
Tested this on Win 7 with SH4 and it still doesn't work. I was using the older version of fraps and DL'ed the latest.
With the Monitor Aero desktop selected it does a good job of recording windows activity. When I fire up the game it only captures the loading scenes and nothing else. I can still record the game footage without Areo selected, but the 2D menu's are still not recorded. Bummer.

Not sure what you're trying to do. This was initially about capturing Windows desktop activities and thus my posts about how to do it and as the video I posted shows, it does work for that just fine.
I'm assuming you're talking about in game? What menus are you trying to have recorded in game? Can you explain a bit more what you were trying to have recorded? I'll see if I can reproduce the same issue once I understand what you're trying to accomplish. Thanks.

It was all about Neal signing into the game online before he tested disconnecting the cable modem. He used a web cam and it wasn't a very focused shot so I suggested using Fraps to capture him doing a log-in but this doesn't work in 2D menu's, so there is a blank area we cannot capture when recording activity from our PC.

Forgive me but I do believe I had the correct answer in the first place. All Neal has to do is D/L the Capture program ( you know, the little camera icon on the task bar? ), click on his SHV icon to get game started, ( maybe click a pic of his desktop first to start with), then if UBI asks for info all Neal has to do is click the camera icon again for a pic which will tell us what UBI ask. WHY the movie part? All that's needed is a still pic.
If his game starts with no UBI interference ( He can click a couple of still pics of beginning of game if he wants. Still no movie needed. ) then we will know something is fishy because didn't UBI say each time you started a game you needed to log on?
Then ( after ending the game ) just to prove a BIG question use your web cam ( or whatever ) and unhook your Internet cable ( Doesn't modem have a rocker switch?? ) then again click the SHV icon and see if game starts.
I'm very curious as to these answers.........aren't you?
Wasn't trying to cut you down, just trying to solve a recording problem.

Got it. Just tried it out and see what you mean. I was able to record my desktop activity, then SHIV loading up and the couple of brief intro vids and then when it started to load up with the initial main screen where the red bar scrolls across showing the loading process it stopped recording.
Until it gets updated to hopefully fix this minor issue there is a simple workaround, turn off the recording and then turn it back on. Yes, you'll have two separate recordings but you'll want to use WMM or VirtualDub to compress the .AVI(s) anyway. I made a quick one illustrating what I mean to show you how easy it is with very little loss of video time, though I lost more than you really need to as I wasn't quick with the finger when trying this out. ;) Yes, very poor quality with no editing whatsoever or transitions added. Just put it together and uploaded it in 10min. and it shows. :D Actually it took longer counting the upload time to YouTube... but excluding the upload time, from start to finish it was a total of less than 10min. to record FRAPS and compile with WMM.
I'll post the link once it's uploaded.

Do the crew say anything, ever? Or is all interaction done via the Captain through "point and click"? :hmmm:
I mean, it looks purdy, very purdy, but it just seems, I don't know, hollow, because the crew (all 27 of them by my count) ignore me/look through me/chew on the railings and generally don't say anything at all, not even an "hello Kaleun" or a visual nod (even the order to silent run was just a text message).
Or is this covered under the "preview only, unfinished feature" etc and so on catch all?
