As commander of your U-boat, the crew's whole existence revolves around you, your decisions, and your skill. If you are not up to the challenge, you take the crew down with you.

Comments: "Passing thermal layer", this could be a placeholder. And no, I don't like the Sims though balloons either :O:
.
hmm, is that a U boat duking it out with destroyers? :P
and a nice video, thanks!

Yeah I didnt think the Germans could detect a thermal layer in these subs.
Also.....we have "thought balloons" ????????
Actuall I dont mind the balloons in place of yelling. Not a big deal to me.
I do worry about the other sub not diving though.

Yes....speak balloons.
Great Video thanks Neil, please bring us more !!
However one small problem, the first officer looks like he has his right eye closed - strange since his other eye is covered with a patch and while i am at it his Iron Cross is completely unrealistic.
Is that contact with the surfaced U-boat in the mission scripted or random?

There's a reason the other sub isn't diving. It is U-110... :03:

Another point.
The sighting contacts were being called out without the periscope looking in the direction of the bearing that was being called out.
For instance...the voice was calling out contact sightings 180 degrees away from where the scope was pointed.

Good point, that's pretty much how all the previous subsims worked, too. Like there's another guy sharing the scope with you. I guess next time I better swng the scope a quick 360 and we're covered.
I like the movement between Zentralle and conning tower. The periscop interface looks gimmicky. Was it not for D I'd buy based on what Neal has shown so far.

Neal...you say that the thermal layer comment was maybe a placeholder? Could you elaberate on this? What do you think it may be a placeholder for?
It has been awhile since I did any U-boot studies but I dont think that the U-boot force had the ability to recognize a thermal layer from inside the boat.
Ahhhhh.... the other sub was U-110. Gotcha now.

I also liked the vid and how you're able to move about the sub. Still not too crazy about the periscope view as I would like the view to be mainly of what you're looking at through the periscope. Good to hear you can minimize the map but I still would like the periscope view to take up more area of the screen instead of being pushed off to the side as I've seen in all the screen shots and videos. Thanks again for the vids and keep 'em coming!

Kind of disappointed to see how quiet and stoic everyone is when you order action stations. I thought we'd see guys moving to their stations or hear some yelling or something.

Neal,
We know that there are different views of interface for different difficulty level.
But... is another view of clockwises (speed, course, depth) like on SH3 and SH4 (standard, circle-shaped indicators)?
Of course I mean periscope view...

I think the periscope view can easily grow on me. It is pretty minimalistic and I like it more now that I've seen it in use.
I still don't like the little floating head in the periscope view and, I hate to say it, the water droplets on the periscope view still drive me nuts. That will take a lot of getting use to.
I notice the helmsman is in the control room. I thought that the helmsman was stationed in the conning tower in a Type VII?
The one eyed first officer with the one good zombie eye made me giggle.

It's U-110, IIRC this is the one that was captured off Iceland by the RN and pressed into service as HMS Graph. I believe they got an Enigma off of her. I imagine this is one of the scripted scenarios, and the object is to save her from the entire Royal Navy. So she is probably scripted not to be able to dive. Though at that range it looks like she is going to go down one way or the other in short order.

IIRC the HMS Graph was originally KM U-570, whereas the U-110 actually did sink while the RN was towing her away. Or rather was allowed to sink accidentally on purpose.

correct :yeah:
Right.
When you say the health bar is optional, do you mean the graphics? Or is there an "realistic sinking" thingy in the options? Because even if you turn the bar off, you still know the other ship has health points and after a bit you start to remember how many torps per ship you need. Which, of course, is BS. :yep:
And yes, I am aware that both SH3 and 4 had HP's on the ships, but I was just thinking that it propably would be a good time to, you know, invent something new? SH is starting to remind me of the OFP/ArmA series; OFP(SH3) new and cool, SH4(ArmA) better graphics not much new, SH5(ArmA2) better graphics but not much really new stuff in it.

:haha: Actually I meant if the British will sink it or cease fire at some point and try to capture it..
Come to think of it, the game mechanics probably don't have that many options, but who knows..
What would make an interesting scenario in a situation like this would be:
a) to actually have to sink the uboat before it is boarded,
b) be penalised if you sink it too soon and
c) having an increased chance of being detected while doing so ...

Naah, the British sank U110 after they captured it to ensure the
Germans never discovered the capture of an enigma machine and (more
importantly at this stage in the war) the capture of code books for the
entire month.
HMS Graph was U570. they captured that because it's code books where
destroyed and the British where more than happy to let the Germans
think they had captured code books. Besides, Bletchly Park was now
cracking codes faster than Pirates crack SHV.exe.
British Naval officers just don't do Uboat-chic like the Germans do:

Great video Neal. It would seem to have dispelled some issues that were in question. The thermal layer deal has to go. Need German voices. Nice the health bar is optional. Looks workable to me.
-Periscope depth is 4 metres :o
-U-110 was a Type IX, not a VII :stare:
-Watch officer has only one eye and even so passed the KM qualification :nope: but since the navigator wears glasses, they probably were qualified by the same medic court :03:
-Battlestations sounds like US subs
-Periscope reticle historically incorrect ... again

Is SH5 still the same as SH3 or SH4, ie oldschool submarine simulation we all know and love since Silent Service commodore 64 times... or is it now some new role playing game arcade shooter for 12 year old mainstream kids?
Obviously I would like to continue the oldschool SH3/4 way, if there is any RPG extras and health bars which can be avoided/turned off, fine, I got no problem with that.
Any way to get rid of the stoopid outlines of the clickable characters and equipment? They really crap on the immersion and make it feel like a game rather than an experience.

Since you ask, I'm not all that excited about having to move from one compartment to another. I know most like this and that it was asked for, but an option to also move with a hotkey would be nice.
WSAD keys and I don't get along very well. If I have a lot of time, sure, ok...but if you need to RUN about to get things done quickly I for one may not be able to. (disability)

Having watched Neal's, alias Niel, alias Neil, alias Kneel, alias Jenny's latest in-game footage I must admit my scepticism dial is starting to move back towards quiet optimism, as opposed to out and out and despair – Thank you Neal for restoring the faith
Though I still have some reservations about the thing that must not be mentioned that begins with D! - I feel a little less worried about in-game disruption due to internet drop-out- though I’m still worried about save games – would love to hear from Neal if the real thing is actually less of a bother than the concept seems to those without access to the game.
A couple of niggles - I really find the thought, or speech bubbles extremely annoying and the eye-patch thing has got to go, either before game release or as a mod –
Question - Neal is there any evidence of multiple, interchangeable or random generated crew heads or faces – I cant help thinking that a player would get really sick of the same faces, boat after boat, career after career, campaign after campaign - Or could this be modded.
Can crew be moved by the player into different compartments – cant help but feel two guys dawdling their way through a reload, while another calmly looks on while he plays pocket billiards, and all in the midst of battle, does seem a little unrealistic. Would like to see some more folks in there doing ‘things’
Now for my real gripe!
Has any one noticed the lack of visible salami, random boxes, hanging fruit and stowed foodstuffs - the interior looks way too clean. You can't have a steel tube full of stinky Germans without rows and rows of greasy salami and hams - I know this is a preview, but, as a player with a keen interest in immersion I would like to know if this kind of ‘set dressing’ may be put in before release or if it could be modded later following release.
*NB My reference to stinky Germans should in no way be taken as a slur on individual Germans, nor Germans as a whole, simply a reference to the cramped conditions of submarines of the day –
At least in the context of a WW2 U-Boat simulation I would prefer my Germans to be sweaty and stinky and surrounded by the previously mentioned random foodstuffs including salami and Ham

Actually I do - they made a movie of it - The 300 – It’s about these guys, around 300 Greek guys - who attacked the Persians, (modern day Iran) with Salami - and won!
Who knows if the present day leader of Iran, Mr. Amadinnerjacket continues to develop the countries nuclear abilities maybe The Western powers should threaten them with Salami
But I digress - finding out the correct pronunciation and the presence, or absence of the previously mentioned cold meat products is of vital importance for those of us concerned about historical accuracy, immersion and game-play

Neal,
Can you confirm that the mechanics of the game change at higher realism level and not just the visuals?
This is mainly directed toward the visibility of the "health bars". Also, do you know what they indicate? Is it flooding/fire or is it really just HP?
Does switching between low/high have any effect on the mechanics?

I am willing to bet that blue bar is for flooding, and red bar for HP. This way we will get more variety in sinking...

Yeah, when the Destroyer on the left was bearing on the sub with full speed, it really looked perfect, huge bow wave and the screws were kicking up the sea too. This realtime wave generation stuff is very cool.

I hope it is flooding/fire. I really, really want a realistic flooding/sinking system.
A ship sinks because it loses buoyancy, not because its health bar reaches zero.

Too nitpicky or a lack of attention to detail on part of the developers?

Not too nitpicky at all. It shows a sloppy eye for detail and detail is what makes a good sim. :nope:

Attention to detail, or the lack there of, came to mind during one of the first SH5 videos released when I heard the American style "Awuuga, Awuuga" diving alarm on a U-boat. People mentioned it and said it was easily modded.
True, but shouldn't it be correct right out of the gate?
If that detail is lacking, what others are lacking? It seems the more we see of the game, the more these little details come out. :damn:
Still on the fence about the game though. There is a certain amount that can be overlooked. We shall see.

Neal, can you use the arrow keys ( < > ) to move the periscope instead of your mouse? your mouse movements were kind of jerky where a smoother turn would be of the arrow key left or right.
Is there a way to slow down the arrow key like "Shift + arrow" ( left or right )? Think there was in SH3 but SH4 got left out ( I think )?
Anyway good show :salute: but UBI has to bite the bullet or no sale here.

If there is a keyboard equivalent for turning the scope, I have not found it. I wish there was, I don't like using the mouse either. Especially when I am trying to keep the scope trained and enter TDC variables.

My bad on that as SH4 uses left/right or up/down arrow for periscope ( & TBD ) for normal speed, ctrl + arrow for slow, shift + arrow for fast.

Well actually, turns out, as TH0R commented earlier, the DDs signal each other even in SH4. I'm mainly a SH3 driver so thought this was a new feature. It sure adds to the atmosphere of the game.

Great videos Neal!
Thanks!
Lots of people on this community is very concerned about the game, thinking that it will be some sort of arcade shooter or worse (and some...sorry guys...exagerate!!!). But for what I have been seeing it will have all the realistic options that we came to like.
I understand Ubisoft's position regarding the eye candy and other things (auto TDC and ships health bars) because they want a broader audience for the game. After all, money goes in on development, and money must come out of it.
But I believe it will be a great game. Just the fact of being able to walk around the sub, the fact that you are looking down from the command room and being able to see all the way down to the torpedo room past the radio room and other compartments...makes, to me, a great immersion.
And if the game is moddable, better yet. And I believe that Ubisoft will allow it, otherwise they know thet they will lose a great hardcore community which is very faithful to this series, and from a purely commercial point of view, I don't believe Ubi would like to lose this public. More over that they are now trying to broader the audience.
So, come March. Let's buy this thing and have hours of fun.
(and if not, let's mod it. Best example ever: SH4..from boring to glory in just one overhaul)

I understand you. I was in the same situation with SH4. After much thinking (and reading through the forums :D) I finally installed Trigger Maru Overhaul.
Its a whole new game. It's amazing. I regret not having installed before.
TMO will make your life both harder and easier. It does not have some of the the same functionalities as of SH3 (i.e. clickable characterers), but it adds a lots of functionalities and it makes the game more realistic.
I don't know which version of SH3 do you have, but if you want to play as an U.S. skipper, super mods are the way to go.

And that's not because of any lack on SH4's part; it's because of the lack of 'extra' mods. GWX struggled for some time against the charge that it was only an eye candy mod. They have long proved that that's not true, but what sets GWX apart is the eye candy. Most mods in SH4 have fixed most of the problems, but it still hasn't been given any special treatment in that department.
SH4 is the better platform, which is why I still play it. It still needs that extra touch.
