I use SH3 Commander to load my game. Every so often I'll click "Manage Crew" to see if I want to change anything. Usually I don't, but one thing bugs me:

When I look at my officers, there is always a line at the bottom of the list of suggestions that reads, and I qoute:

"It may be time to replace this officer so that he can gain command of his own U-boat."

Is this true? :06:

I am stuck with wondering if Carlewitz, my trusty Watch Officer supreme, will be "given command" of his own Uboat.

Every captain started off as a Fanrich (cadet). You yourself were a 1WO until your own kaleun recommended you for command. Sooner or later they have to leave the nest.:sunny:

"The cage sure looks awful empty, don’t it Pa?"
"Yes son, it sure does. But... don’t the trees seem nice and full?"

Oh, Andy Griffith Show... is there nothing you can't do?

Okay, so if I promote my beloved Carlewitz he will indeed participate in the Grand Campaign? I mean, Carlewitz is the man, but if he doesn't do anything else in the game once offboard then what's the point? :wah:

I promoted most of my original crew away, I've got at least 3 officers now commanding their own boats while I kept one (The least experienced now a vet) for myself. Gives me a good rotation of new and old hands on my boat. Makes me feel like a real commander.

*waves buh-bye to Carlewitz*

I lose too many officers to U-boat tranfers anyways. At one time, I was stuck with 1 Leutenant, my engineer, and 4 fanrich's, who either specialized in flak or gunner. Lets just say it was a very crappy patrol, made it back to base with about 20 nm left in the tanks. Sunk only 3 ships, for about 25k tons. Curse fail crews.

I've been playing it safe, as with any new game. I will try my next career with "take yer oatmeal as it ah sez it is, not as the dawgspit yer wants!".

My thanks to all. Please, anyone else, post as you wish. This is educational for all n00blets.

SH3Commander won't let you promote sailors to petty officers or petty officers to officers but the game will. So you can use SH3Commander to promote within the ranks and if you have realistic crew transfers on and one of your officers gets transferred, use the game promotions to up one of your petty officers to an officer position and move the other ranks up, filling the lowest gap with a new, fresh out of training sailor.

That way you can keep all your original crew and nurture them up to their own boats, provided you live long enough.

...my beloved Carlewitz...
If you're using SH3 Commander why do you still have one of the stock names?

No matter, I just hate those names.:dead:

@ Sailor Steve

Danged if I know, brother. I click a button in SH3 Commander and the game loads up with some alterations that I like. :)
