you are referring to SH3Commander?

I think he means Sh3Gen (by GlobalExplorer). It analyses the campaign files and savegames and creates an intelligence report of possible enemy activity.

I don't know what the Gen is supposed to mean in the name but I've never seen it being used to mean 'General'. The word does appear in the menu though, but only in the 'not specific' meaning, not in the militaristic sense.

As for the greyed-out button, I can't remember having experienced it, but common sense tells me you may have forgotten to select a savegame of one of your commander profiles. Or forgot to provide the propper path to the SH3 game folder in the "General settings". ;)

My bet would be on 'Generator', since the button in question says 'Generate'.

@ Kimmers: You have to start the patrol, get clear of the harbor, Alt+Tab out of the game while it is running, and start SH3 Gen. It should work then.

I don't think the program works with Vista or windows7, at least, I couldn't get it to work.
When I had xp, it worked fine, however.

See: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=157841&highlight=SH3Gen

@ Kimmers: You have to start the patrol, get clear of the harbor, Alt+Tab out of the game while it is running, and start SH3 Gen. It should work then.

Sorry but you have to leave port and travel to a safe saving distance and save the game, then exit SH3 (or ALT TAB from main menu) then in the second field where it says savegame (in SH3Gen), you need to click the [...] button to the right and browse to your savegame folder and select the save you just made. Now when you do this, the Generate button should be active and it will then insert all the extra info into your game when you load that save. Remember that it is static and to update the info you will need to make additional saves and repeat the process for each.

One thing you could have done was hit the 'Documentation' button at the top of the program window in SH3Gen and you'd have found all this out but hey, guess ya didn't see it....

EDIT, I just copied everything from the programs quickstart guide:

[INSIDE SH3]
1.Start a new patrol (or continue and existing one) and create a save game once you are out of port. Remember the name of your save game.

NOTE: Sh3Gen creates backups of all affected files, but it might be good idea to always create two savegames if you are using Sh3Gen, so you don't run the (small) risk of losing your progress if there should be a problem with Sh3Gen. Not that this happens a lot, just to be safe.

NOTE: Don't save you game before you are out of port traffic, because otherwise on reload all static units in your proximity will lose their waypoints and sink. This is a known limitation of Sh3 1.4b and, unless UBI creates another patch, nothing can be done about it.

2.Alt-Tab out of Silent Hunter III.

[IN WINDOWS]
3.Start Sh3Gen to create your intelligence update.

[IN SH3GEN]
4.Click the button right of the entry "Savegame" and browse to your savegame.

If you have selected a savegame, the button "Generate" will become enabled. Click on it to start the generation process.

NOTE: It is not possible to generate multiple updates in succession. Therefore, before you can generate a new update, you must restart Sh3Gen. However, there is no problem if you restart Sh3Gen and repeatedly generate the files until you are satisfied with the resulting intelligence update.

5.Return to Silent Hunter III to continue your mission.

[BACK IN SH3]
6.Reload your savegame.

If everything went correctly, your ingame map will be updated with new entries, and your war diary will contain an intelligence report with the most valuable information. This data comes from SHIII's campaign files, so there is a good to very high chance that the targets can in fact be found.

Isn't that what I said?

Irish:

I think the major issue is that Sh3Gen tries to make new files and folders (for example it's own backups, and for that TatukGIS stuff) inside it's own application folder (in c:\Program Files\Sh3Gen if installed to default location). Vista and Windows 7 don't like it when applications do that. Because of UAC and security protection. Simply don't install it anywhere in Program Files and you should have no problems. I have mine (Vista home premium) placed in c:\games\SH3Gen and I have no problems. But perhaps you experience different symptoms. You weren't very clear on what happend to it.

Thanks for the note Pisces; I don't remember what the problem was as this was over a year and a half ago.
I'll retry again. If I remember, it had to do with net framework, and I had 3.2, but the program required 2.?
My computer instructions said I shouldn't install the older version or the computer police would come get me and make me listen to Bill Gates for 5 straight days.:damn:

You didn't mention saving, just ALT Tab 'while the game is running'.
