I wonder, how the timeline is for the game. There are still 3 weeks to go. So, what is the actual state of a game, three weeks before release?

some ideas:

- internal betatesting this week, bugfixing -> 2/22/10
- compiling of final data next week -> 2/23/10
- data send to dvd factory next week -> 2/24/10
(-> final demoversion send to gamemagazines?)
- dvd are produced and send to retailstores -> 3/1/10

The Moderators here are keenly looking forward to the first two weeks after the game's release. If you haven't made a donation to subsim lately, March will be the time to do it.

More entertainment value than Tiger Woods and TMZ put together. :D

Nah, I think the game will be arcade like but the modders will be dreaming up new things for it. If things like pressing the A key creates a crash, then there will be some problem. At this point, a wreckless first couple of weeks after release is the norm. :D

I'm thinking it must have gone "gold" by now, or has to this week, to prepare for manufacturing. Although you'd think that would be an announcement on the website. I have a little experience in software game development--you need at least two weeks after "gold" before it is on the shelves. The fact that they've provided a solid release date would almost ensure it's gold already.

Gold--meaining beta testing over, RC's (release candidates) created and tested, with the final RC chosen, which becomes the "Gold" build. The only possible changes at this point being to the readme.txt and such.

Well if you want a serious answer, it would be that the silence from Ubisoft regarding a game with a release date about three weeks away, is deafening.

My own personal opinion is that this game is in trouble. I don't think it's ready for release. I don't think they have the online element working properly, and I certainly don't think that they have 'Beta Tested' it in the real sense of the term.

What should be written on the DVD case is not 'Permanent Internet Connection Required', but rather.....'Caveat Emptor'.

I think that if we don't get the "gold light" before the end of the month, we ain't getting it on March 4th. There's still 18 days for that though, plenty of stuff can happen in 2 weeks and a half. :yep:

All Respect to TDK--

I disagree--but I guess we'll find out soon. It seems lately, IMHO, especially with simulations--it's simply NOT WORTH IT, to disclose information to the fans, as it invariably blows up into an absolute time-wasting, responding to questions, defending this and that, etc.--taking away from the GOAL which is to finish the software development cycle. Not sure if the ratio is the same as in flight sims--but people that care about such issues (manaul TDC) are, unfortunely, a tiny fraction of the audience, and it doesn't make business sense to cater to there needs, necessarily--especially as far as keeping them informed goes.

If there is communication with the "public" it has to be done just right, I think. Matt Wagner did a great job, IMHO, on the development of DCS: Blackshark (I'm biased, as I lent a hand proof-reading some stuff). He was VERY careful what he announced to the public, but managed to keep announcements coming (and good announcements, not a bunch of already known, assumed stuff). He got burnt once or twice, but overall, he managed to keep the fans informed, and not cause too many flame wars. Guess what topic did create a problem? lol, starforce.

Anyway, it's nice that a SMALL dev team/production can successfully communicate with its niche community via a "producer" type role (Matt's role, among others). Ubisoft could learn from such things. As the release date approached for DCS: Blackshark--Matt himself spent ALOT of time creating videos of using the various systems of the ultra-fidelity simulation!! Forget about a simple bulletpoint announcement saying "Manual TCD available". If Matt was at the helm, he would have created a freaking high definition video, with voice-over, covering a complete attack on a convoy using the manual TDC.

With 3 weeks to go I bet the master has already gone to press. But that doesn't stop the devs releasing a day 1 patch via their downloader. Which is one of the few advantages of their unline DRM system. Of course Steam manages that without having to be online to play.

Dates of course! It always throws me when people use decimal points where they shouldn't.

So, are we supposed to guess the numbers? I think the answer is 42.

Oh I'm sure your way is the proper way in... er... U 48? Anyway I'm only saying, here in the UK I think most if not all people only ever use a decimal point as a decimal point, whereas on the net I see it used as a thousand separator by some people (e.g. 10.000 = ten thousand ) and as a date separator by others, and it always confuses me. There are other symbols that can be used to avoid confusion, so why don't people use those? 10,000 and 10000 are both correct and neither are confusing. Similarly, 02/08 and 02-08 are much more obviously dates than 2.08. Anyway, I didn't mean to go off on some rant about it and I doubt there is an official universal "correct" way :DL

Tomorrow, they will tell us the donkey is a zebra
Day after tomorrow, the donkey bites them in the arse.
The following day, theil paint more stripes on the donkey and tell us it's a great benefit as the donkey will be online.
The next day they'll tie the donkey to a line.

On 04 March, the donkey will bray
Hurray, hurray it's D Day! Which stands for Dreadfdl dreaded DRM, Disaster Day.

There it is, your answer to all you need to know :smug:

ISO 8601 covers that, including using "." as a date separator.

See also here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_stop#Mathematical_usage).

You'd think that would be standardized. There's too much room for confusion there.

O.k. in germany the , is what is your decimal point. So to avoid confusion here, we use the . as date separator and even a thousends separator. The latter one gives me confusion as well, in english forums at least.

I should imagine everything is finalised, discs are ready for shipment and all systems are go or will be by next week.

I do share your concern though over the lack of the 'gold' announcement :hmmm:

Thanks for that link. I've seen other people use the 'full stop' in that fashion, and assumed (correctly, it turns out) that it was done differently by different cultures.

I actually use the period, as well as the 'day first' method of dating, in my patrol reports. I've seen some real ones, and that was the way the German captains filed theirs. So when I'm gaming the war starts on 1.9.1939, but for me today's date is 2/10/2010

It is more and more obvious - that timing was aimed to torp GWX4 and sink it befor it "goes gold"... to clear it away - from SH5 Atlantic path.
They planned that DRM shock long time ago... and last thing they needed was GWX4 in a full strenght and gameplay in Feb2010.

Trying to push into market an online-arcade game, against finished and patched GWX4 would be "mission impossible".

That part of timing is effected brilliantly - after that, nothing really makes sense... including "gold" date with "unknown" sim-gameply, options screen, rough seas,... etc

I have never understood the whole gold thing anyway.

But Napoleon total war went gold Jan 22 or so and its being released the 23rd of feb.

If SHV is not gold yet or close I don't see how it could make it in three weeks. But someone once told me that a game went gold once 1 week before release and was on the shelfs the day of release. So who the hell knows.

In the days of Steam and D2D I have no idea what Gold exactly means now either. It used to mean that a 1.0 version had been finalized so that the material (CDs/DVDs, Manuals etc) could be produced and shipped. The amount of time that took literally depended on who they were paying to print the books and make the discs.
