View Full Version : Question about DRM and modding.
Ok let's assume that the DRM thingy is here to stay.
If someone decides to mod SH5 where must his files reside? On Ubi's machines? If that's the case, I think it is funny to "pay" Ubi to do what could easily be considered "development - research", on which they'll have "officially" access to (as it will be stored on their machines). Isn't there an issue here?
(Subject not limited to SH5 or Ubi of course).

That is a pretty neat question.
All will be revealed in March http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
And don't think this is the only ethical or legal question that is likely to come out of this either. Despite the trend when it comes to shelling out cash, unless I get something in me hot little hands I'd not buying.

They will host modders files for our security and sell it after some time as addon or make that costumers pay for use it (files and servers ).
:D
Ubi wants you to enjoy playing with the great benefit of heads Ubi wins, tails you lose :D

The way the system works is that the savegame files on your local machine are sync'd up with Ubi's servers. I don't see how this would affect mod files at all. Also, the devs have said that it won't affect modding.

Ubi says updates are easier to do thru DRM. Won't those updates overwrite any file changes done by the mod?
That seems to be one of the biggest issues that I have with DRM with my verrrrry limited knowledge on the subject.

True. Wonder how many patches or incremental updates we'll see. It's always hell trying to get patches out of Ubi for a SH title, so I'm not sure how much that will be an issue.
The devs have said it's more moddable. Unless the new engine includes a MODS folder, and the updates stay away from it, it MUST prompt you for any updates or it will break mods.

there is no way to answer the questions we have until we can actually disect thegame and see just how it works but this will be known in about 3 weeks so then we will have something more then just speculation to work with

Wouldn't it have been nice though for an experienced modder here to have been consulted regarding how this is supposed to work?
Then, he could have posted and told us not to worry.... without in any way compromising any kind of NDA.
The big question is, wether the server allows modified save games to be uploaded or if it sticks to a certain template. The devs say it'll be moddable, but to what extent? Will gameplay and/or campaign mods mess the save games if the server only accepts certain template?
We must keep in mind that this DRM wasnt invented for SHV, but for the bigger sellers that are coming out, most of which are unmoddable if you look at the earlier games in the series'. :hmmm:

my personal "guess" is the game doesnt even work yet
think about it, no "real" in-game footage that could renew interest in the game
no images of any realism settings of manual targetting
no preview copies given to media types or neal to help promote the game
in my mind this could be because the servers arent even running yet so its not possible to play the game at this time so none of the usual marketting stuff above can be done. i just cant believe they wouldnt try to get some sort of good press at this point if it were possible.

With three to four weeks to go and the game not working yet does not bode well for an on time release.

i suspect its a delay in getting the servers up thing and not that the game isnt finished yet

Judging by this:
"PERMANENT INTERNET CONNECTION IS REQUIRED TO PLAY THE GAME"
http://silent-hunter.uk.ubi.com/silent-hunter-5/requirements.php
It definitely is here to stay unless sales prove otherwise.
How will it affect moding, we can't predict. My guess is that it should be as modable as announced...

Are you serious? :hmmm:
Don't you think that this close to release a test server hasn't already tested the basic functionality at the very least? :DL

I want to have my bag of popcorn ready when this place lights up.
The release date comes and goes and no SH5. :har:

The servers are tested during the community beta test of "The Settlers 7". This beta version has used the Ubisoft Game Launcher tool to write/read savegames on the Ubi servers.
No Beta, no copies for review, no ingame footage. Why?
Ubi forgot its servers password. Bwa haha :har::har::har::har::har:

Maybe Ubi doesn't have one?
