hi to all members here including neal i was wondering if anyone would be offended or upset if i bought and tried sh5 i mean i spent over 650 dollars to upgrade my computer for this game and ubisoft pulls this drm thing well we are going to need some people here to analyze the game so to speak and i was wondering if you would all nominate me to try out the game and give an honest feedback on all of it and i have been here for a long time im setting up a pole, vote how you feel there will be no hard feelings no matter what if u all say no then thats what i will do
lt commander lare
Don't worry about it dude. Despite the negative hype a lot of us are going to buy SH5, myself included. I'm not going to feel guilty towards the subsim community, nor should I, and nor should you or anyone.
I'm abstaining from the vote because there is no option to say it is your call.
I've made my call. You have to make your own and should not let pressure from any group sway your convictions.:salute:

neal has already said he is buying it to give us all an unbiased informative review of the game.
do what you want to but there is no need to do it for the community to get info about the game.

I'm with Tarjak. Don't ask others to tell you what to do. Make up your own mind.
Adding to what Webster said, there will be many who will buy the game, and they will talk about it. What you do is up to you.
I would politely ask that you start using punctuation in your writing, though. It makes it much easier to read.:sunny:

i mean i spent over 650 dollars to upgrade my computer for this game and ubisoft pulls this drm thing
That really ruffles my feathers when I read things like that. People spent a lot of money before knowing about DRM, some found out they can't even play it. Anyways...
Like others said, make up your own mind. Remember Neal will also buy and review it as soon as he can.

Full stop
A full stop is used to mark the end of a sentence.
A full stop is sometimes used to mark a short form of a word such as an initial.
Also known as a 'period'.
http://s3.hubimg.com/u/125538_f120.jpg
Comma
A comma is used to mark a pause between different items in a list.
Use as a pause or an interval.
A comma is often used to separate two phrases within the same sentence.
A comma is used to mark the beginning and the end of a phrase which interrupts the flow of a sentence.
http://s4.hubimg.com/u/125539_f120.jpg
Question mark
A question mark is used at the conclusion of a sentence that asks a direct question.
It is not used at the end of an indirect or reported question.
http://s3.hubimg.com/u/125542_f120.jpg
Exclamation point
An exclamation point at the end of a word, phrase or sentence to indicate forceful utterance or strong feeling, such as surprise or rage. It can also follow an order given to someone. Also called an exclamation mark
http://s2.hubimg.com/u/125549_f120.jpg
Brackets
Brackets are used to separate a comment or phrase from the rest of the sentence.
The bracketed word, phrase, or sentence may amplify the meaning or be explanatory. Or it may contain a remark or passage that departs from the theme.
http://s3.hubimg.com/u/125550_f120.jpg
Hyphen
A hyphen is used between the parts of a compound word or name (to join two words that are normally separated) or between the syllables of a word (especially when divided at the end of a line of text).
http://s4.hubimg.com/u/125551_f120.jpg
Semicolon
A semicolon marks a longer pause than a comma to indicate a major division in a sentence. Used to create a more distinct separation between clauses or items on a list than is indicated by a comma. It separates statements which could stand as sentences on their own and are usually of similar importance, but are not linked with a conjunction.
http://s1.hubimg.com/u/125552_f120.jpg
Dash
A dash is used in place of a semicolon to mark a pause in a more dramatic way - to create an abrupt break or pause in a sentence or hesitation in an utterance.
Two dashes can used instead of brackets to separate a piece of information from the rest of the sentence.
A dash is written very much like a hyphen. The difference being the dash is longer, and has a gap on both sides of it.
http://s2.hubimg.com/u/125553_f120.jpg
Quotation Marks
Quotation marks, also called Inverted Commas, are placed on either side of words and the punctuation that goes with them, to show that someone has spoken or of a text directly cited.
Quotation marks can be put around a word or phrase to make it stand out from the rest of the sentence.
Quotation marks can be written in one of two ways "either" - 'or'. "Sometimes this way is used to show speech" and the other one is use to 'draw attention' to a word or phrase.
http://s3.hubimg.com/u/125554_f120.jpg
Apostrophe
An apostrophe used to indicate the omission of one or more letters. It can be also be used the same way with numbers. For instance to denote a calendar year: instead of 1998 it could be written as '98.
An apostrophe is used before or after an 's' at the end of word to show who owns something. When you use its to mean the owner of something you do not write an apostrophe.
An apostrophe also shows the plural of a number or letter of the alphabet, or a word which does not normally have a plural.

It's a pitty this drm issue. the game looks promising.
If the devs speak it right then sh5 will have:
- Better flooding of the ships.
- Multiple parts of the ships can break.
- Adds to the interior and crew managment a lot (the first person view,
press in sh3 shift-f2 and try to walk around and you can see how nice this feature is).
- Graphics of course.
- Much better campaign.
- Wolfpacks.
:hmmm:
My copy of SHV is still in preorder and still can't decide what to do.
I was looking out for this one but I don't wanna support Ubi with this OSP thing.

Imho, you can cancel and wait... that is wise, suppose sh5 is full of bugs etc, if not then you have oportunity of buying later after reading reviews comments etc. They don't make a discount for pre-ordering right?.

Guys, nobody here should ever be intimidated by the opinion of other members. If you want to purchase the game then purchase it. And if you want to give feed back on the game, then feel free to do that also.
The purpose of myself and others complaining about DRM is not to influence others in terms of purchasing choices. We are simply expressing an opinion that some share and others don't.
This is not a trade union. Anyone wishing to purchase this game should do so with no feeling of guilt. For me, not purchasing it is a point of principle. For others, DRM is not a big deal.
That's the circle of life. :)
I haven't checked my punctuation or spelling, so I apologise in advance, Steve. :DL

Don't worry. At work I am frequently surrrounded by Master degree holders whom I consider to be depressingly close to illiterate.....
Here are a few words from an acknowledged master of the language, George Orwell:
It is rather the same thing that is happening to the English language. It becomes ugly and inaccurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. The point is that the process is reversible. Modern English, especially written English, is full of bad habits which spread by imitation and which can be avoided if one is willing to take the necessary trouble.
He wrote that in 1946 (the bolding was done by me). It's an extract from an essay 'Politics and the English Language' (http://www.orwell.ru/library/essays/politics/english/e_polit), and I use that quote as exhibit 1 when someone tells me spelling/punctuation/grammar don't matter.
I think that essay should be included in every English curriculum around the world, especially for his simple rules for clear writing.
OK, off soap box...

Another vote for the "do what you like" camp. I will not be bullied, pressured or otherwise intimidated by the purchasing decisions of others, no matter how much the messages put forth in some member's signatures would like me to be.
I will not tell an individual to buy or not to buy. However, everyone should know, Despite my dissapointment I'm not buying.' This damned trickery Ubi wants to use to eventually charge us a service fee to finance servers, etc. doesn't work with me.
If enough of us stand firm, Ubi's plan will fail. We are not alone. Because of the DRM launch we're up front. Lots and lots of gamers out there will also vote with their wallets.

@ Steeltrap: Thanks for the Orwell reference. I had never read it, but his own illustration about 'dressing up' language reminds me of one I came up with a long time ago:
While it is theoretically true that one may direct a quadruped of the genus equus to a nearby source of liquid refreshment, it does not necessarily follow that one may coerce said equestrian to partake thereof.

If they dont maybe i will change my mind down the line but for now some of the other members here are correct we need to wait I mean but for other members that want to buy the game I think thats great because they can provide feedback on the game and let us know how it is I guess its just dissapointing that ubisoft did this because this is the only game I was interested in this year thats coming out

As a long time MMORPG junkie I know this all to well. New game/expansion is about to be released, hype is building up, some vacation is planed and before you know it the big day has arrived. You happily install the game/expansion and try to log on to the server to register/upgrade an account just to have a lot of timeouts. Then you manage to do that and wait for the game to patch and then finally you just have to wait for the server to come back up from the latest crash. This might go on for 24 hours or so....

ubisoft hasn't turned us down when we requested things like an entire sub to run trough and all those things we would like to see.

I canceled my pre-order. Been down this road before with a couple of other titles and it just is not worth the headache. If I am paying top dollar for something, I want to be able to use it WHEN I WANT.
In the end, everyone has to make up their own mind. The group cannot make the decision for you. It sounds like you have put a lot of money into building your machine around this title. That is not a small expenditure. Sounds like a tough call in your case.

Realistically, one copy ain't gonna make a difference.
It might convince the rest of us to put up that much more of a stand against OSP, so Ubisoft might just relent that much sooner, so the rest of us can get along with putting money in Ubisoft's pockets.

I don't have nearly information about the game to even begin to think about buying it or not. The actual facts of how the game series is improving are very few and far between. All we know is that the scope has been narrowed to TypeVIIs, until 1943, and you can traverse about the entire submarine in first person.
I'm going to need a demo and/or a review from a trusted source before I'll consider it.

It's always better to experience something yourself than to just rely on what others are saying. People are too different in their opinions, likings and dislikings - one player of SH5 might say a feature stinks, while another player actually loves that particular feature. There will be many pros and cons on everything, and the only way to find your personal pros and cons is to experience the game all for yourself. You can then discuss your thoughts with others, but you can't discuss something you don't know anything self-experienced about. :03:

well in my opinion, do your own thing.
if the DRM isnt a big deal for you then buy the game
if you like the game buy it, but forget about this notion of "if everyone doesnt buy it" stuff unless trying to take part in stopping DRM matters to YOU.
if you had real issues with the DRM working or were worried about not getting or being able to afford the connection fees then waiting would make sense.
weather you do or dont buy it wont matter, what does matter is how YOU view it. if you want to make a stand against DRM then do that but if you are on the fence with this DRM thing then one sale more or less wont make a difference.

If I'd just spent six hundred and fifty dollars on upgrading my machine I'd be wanting to push my investment to the limit too. Do you play flightsims? The new game from the developers of IL2 looks like it'll benefit from a beefy machine.

This boils down to you - my opinion is made. I will not give Ubisoft my money until this OSP is taken out - though they are welcome to put in a DRM package, just not one so invasive. I vote with my money - you do the same with yours.
Yes, if you buy it your telling UBI that your ok with OSP. And thats your right. If OSP is a deal breaker for you as it is me, then don't buy it. If it is something you can live with - then by all means buy it and tell those of us who don't (yet) what your thoughts are!
Don't worry about hard feelings. Anyone who would get upset that you bought the game with YOUR money when it doesn't have anything to do with them, isn't someone that has an opinion worth anything to start with on the matter.
