I just had the best patrol ever!
I was north of England, when I got a report of a convoy in AN15. I moved to intercept. It was night, and the weather was crappy. Rain, and low visibility.
I made sonar contact at 5:40am on September 20, 1940. Put up the scope, and it was flat seas and perfect visibility.
2 large cargo ships and 2 ore carriers looked like the prime targets.
The convoy was lead by a destroyer. At the last minute, I decided to hit the destroyer first. I did. It did not sink, but came to a stop. I started shooting merchant ships.
Then another destroyer came along. I got him to chase me, and sent a magnetic under his chin and blew him sky high. Went back to shooting merchants. Then another destroyer came. I nailed it with a magnetic also. There was only one more escort, so I got it to chase me, and put another magnetic under his chin. Now all the escorts were gone, and none of the merchant ships had guns!!!!!
I surfaced and began to work my way through the convoy, one ship at a time, chewing their waterlines with our 88. There were two small freighters that had machine guns on them. They hit us a few times but I sank them.
In the end, 2 passenger/cargo ships were all that remained, and one was badly damaged. I expended every piece of ammunition on the boat, including the anti-aircraft. 15 ships sunk, including 4 destroyers. 66,491 tons.
Got awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. :)
I will be adding this to my ongoing story in more dramatic form soon.
