Hi, I recently read a post ( terribly sorry but I forgot name and location ) about changing the visibility range ( I GUESS it was in SH4 - someone changed the 8km to 9...???)...I just wanted to ask if anyone knew which file to change in order to get a visibility of 6-7 km...Scene.dat ? Which values ? I get an fps drop when on bridge-100% the 8km range causes it...I don't spend too much time on bridge, so I guess my watchmen can do their job regardless of this minor change...thank You
ps: by 'visibility' I mean my own 'eyes'' range...I hope I wasn't too vague...

In GWX 3.0 you can change it from 8 KM to 16 KM... those guys would know how to pull it off.

Yeah, but with 16km the game becomes a slideshow :D:D:D
I want to DEcrease, not increase the visibility range :)

You could contact Lehmann, I (think) he did the Atmosphere mod.

for what I understand it not only affects what is rendered in game, but also what the watch crew detects, so if you do figure it out don't drop it too low, or you may miss lots of merchants, and have surprise warships appearing too close for you to avoid them...

That's exactly what I was hoping to avoid - I thought that my own visual range ( without binoculars ---with binoculars I have no fps drop at all ) had nothing to do with the crews'....However, decreasing it to 6-6.5 km should be fine ( I guess )
Thx for the warning ;)

Glad I'm not the only one with framerate hits in the external views. Kind of the same deal here, I get smooth frames through UZO or binos. But from the sail bridge or through either periscope the sim becomes the "slideshow". Free view does fine as long as I keep the sky out of view.
It has a lot to do with the video electronics in my laptop. It has the video RAM to run the sim, but I think the GPU is probably not up to spec for the atmospheric environment in SH3.
Anyway, I find this thread of great interest because I've also wondered if there were a way to lower the human-visible rendering distance - particularly without affecting what crews are able to see.
I'm trying to find that environment mod I looked at yesterday... it had some information in the README with regards to adjusting visible distance and how far the crew can see. I think it was the MEP, but not sure. :hmmm:
EDIT: Would it hurt any to try a PM to the authors of the environment mods, like OLC and the M.E.P?

Crashcart, thats an awesome octopus in your link. It lives in trees?

LOL Found that link indirectly through another link (Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie (http://zapatopi.net/afdb/)) I found here at SUBSIM. The authors are very scientific in their approach to humor. Haven't read all the way through yet, but it's a crackup. Their website (http://zapatopi.net/) seems to be a tongue-in-cheek homage to conspiracy theories. :)
Getting back to visibility, I'll see what I can do with S3D. Had a look at the OLC environment mod in the downloads section a few minutes ago. The README mentions adjusting values in Cameras.dat, and I think I might be able to increase performance by lowering some numbers in there. Will take some time to test it all out, though. :hmmm:

Wow, never would've thought of cameras .dat, I was sure some subnode in the scene.dat should be changed , but You just might be right :salute:
As for the sky, if I look upwards no fps drop...downwards, no fps drop...just when I stare at the horizon...Anyway, I'll look into cameras.dat myself...

I don't think there was any change when I modified the free view in cameras.dat, but have only tried one change so far - was enticed by a vulnerable convoy while I was testing. :woot:
Hadn't even thought of scene.dat, would make sense. :)

I tried the Watch subnode, changed it from interior ( btw I found this strange-why would it be interior ? ) to exterior, enabled free move, but no change whatsoever...reduced the maxdist to 10.00 , still no change...

Ok, I'm almost 100% sure the Sky node has to be the file to alter, the EnvData values are different in the 8km GWX scene.dat and the 16km scene.dat, but I couldn't figure out which onesand to what extent should be changed...At least not yet...:D:wah:
