Those are some of the best photos I've ever seen,
Exception: The XB minelayer that looked like a carrier.

?
now, identifying things on photoes is not my forté, but aint that an type VII? size?
Trouble is, the two photos apper to be not the same boat. By the bow and the second photo has a flag that I can not see in the first. And the look of the boats are more WW1 than a type IXB!

I'm positive it isn't a Type IX.

The bow looks funny...too rounded. I'm too lazy to look right now, but did the IX's have the net cutter on the bow?

Courtesy of this thread elsewhere on the forums (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=161066), I was just watching the linked video (lots of good sub footage but some serious neo-nazi overtones).
At approximately 0:48 (and possible again at 3:25) is a sub with the same nose as the one in the lower half of Rhodes' photo.
Obviously I will bow to greater knowledge here, but I think the top one is a type IX and the bottom is a type VII.
When I first saw the pictures in the book, I notice something strange, like not being the same boat. The legend claims 2 photos of a type IXB and I looked to the bow of both boats, and couldn't see a type IX bow. Even the background is diffrent (for a sequence photos...:hmmm:).
For me, both photos are from ww1 u-boats (possibly). The flag of the second could help identifying.
