It is snowing like heck here in Maryland. After 10pm it is to be the heaviest....it is! Adding the wind for blizzard like conditions....I feel like I'm at Ice Station Zebra. Been going out every 2 hours to shovel. I much rather shovel 2 inches at a time then 24 inches all at once. :yep: I will post some pics tomorrow.

Happy Climate Change! :O:

We are supposed to get hit here in SW Ohio sometime overnight. We've had precipitation all day, rain this morning turning to a rain/snow mix this afternoon although temps stayed just above freezing and it was all just melting on the pavement and turning to slush everywhere else.

Temps are supposed to drop low enough tonight for it all to turn into a proper snowfall and since they're saying the system's slowed down and taken up residence over top of us, we may get upwards of 6" of it by morning. Naturally all that lovely slush is going to be frozen solid underneath it.

Oh well, at least it's on the weekend and not a work day for most folks. And if I make it to the dojo myself, I'm guessing the class won't be crowded for once, lol. Nothing like a "bad weather private lesson" to start off a Saturday. :O:

Lol, we were just saying at work today that we've dodged the bullet on most of the bad winter storms that everyone else in the country seem to be getting hit with this season. Just one major snowfall that really only shut or slowed things down for one day.

Unless it's worse than they're predicting, this one will probably have about the same effect. We've been lucky compared to a lot of winters I remember. OTOH, as my pop used to stay, it ain't spring yet. :O:

We have had about 2 feet over the last 3 weeks - which is highly unusual even for us being in the mountains. Had about 2" last eve, which isn't bad, but it started to sleet about 1:30 am and didn't stop all day - temps hovered between 30-32 so occasionally it was mixed with rain. This morning I had a solid inch of ice on the car, steps, etc.

Work isn't worth dying over, and mountain roads with ice are not my preference for the way to do either.

Wherever ya'll are - stay safe and be sane if you go out in the mess.

We got spanked but good. I have over 2 feet. The storm is not done yet. Cleared my deck of the heavy snow. Cleared a path in the yard for so my pups have a place to take care of business. Cleared my walk out front. I did the deck after the walk out front. I came back to the front after about 30 minutes clearing the deck. There was an inch of snow were I cleared 30 minutes ago! :stare: I hate snow! I have a heat pump that needs to be watched in snow like this. You can not allow the outside unit to get blocked with snow. On top where the large fan pushes the exhaust air was covered by two feet of snow. Where the hell the fan was pushing the air is beyond me. At any rate, I push the damn snow off and the damn fan kicks on leaving me with a face full of snow. WTH! :stare: I hate snow! So I dug the snow out and around the unit. I guess I will be out there in another two hours to shovel some more damn snow. Did I tell you I hate snow? :06:

Do not mistake "weather" with "climate". In Germany we also have the most snowish winter since decades.

However.

January 2010 has been the warmest january in all the 32 years of satellite-based weather measurement and -recording.

South of me, then. Butler County, altho I work just over the county line in Springdale.

Get down to Cincinnati proper once in a while, but I do drive across the river occasionally - usually to buy cigarettes, lol.

We got maybe 5-6 inches of snow here, it's still coming down but not as heavily. Went out this morning and most main roads in my area have been treated and plowed and are passable with care, but they're saying the highways and particulary the on/off ramps are awful. Visibility in some areas was pretty bad. My sensei was late to the dojo because he was one of many people stuck (literally) on a highway overpass at an exit ramp. Fortunately he had a snow shovel in his car and was able to help dig a path, then everybody helped push each other's cars this way and that until everybody got unstuck.

Heard somebody say we are due to get another storm on Monday.

No, up around the I-70 area it was constant of about 12". The only problem now is the temperature drop of about 8-deg tonight and if any winds pick up the drifting could be bad.

Well it seems its cleared up now for the most part. Shovel time!

Sadly I don't think we'll need any shoveling here in my little complex. The lot's been plowed and someone - probably the landlord - came around this afternoon with a snowblower and cleared away most of everything else.

I say "sadly" because apparently I'm the only person in my apartment building who owns a snow shovel... which comes in mighty useful when things get so bad that the private plows and municipal crews can't get to us for a day or two, and the landlord is snowed in like everyone else.

The last time this happened I was the only person who was able to dig my car out.. someone else saw me at it and offered me $5 to rent the shovel. I told them hell no, just take it and leave it outside my door when you're done.

I found it propped up outside my apt a few hours later, and $5 in an envelope taped to my door. Well, whatever, I thought. Five bucks is five bucks, if you insist on paying me, it's your money. An hour later someone knocked on my door and asked to "rent" my shovel. Hell no, I said, just take it and put it back when you're done. They did - and once more there was cash taped to my door.

Finally I just left the shovel outside the door with a big sign that said IF YOU NEED TO USE THIS JUST PUT IT BACK HERE WHEN YOU'RE DONE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ASK, YOU DON'T HAVE TO "RENT" IT.

People kept borrowing... and kept taping money to my door. I think I made around $20!

*sigh*

We haven't had a snow like that since.

No, and I appreciated having it, let me tell you. :O:

It just amused me that the more I insisted to people that they could just borrow the thing for free, the more they wanted to pay for the privilege.

But to be fair, that was the worst winter storm we'd had in a long time - right before Christmas, and some places were snowed in for over a week. And I don't mean rural areas, I mean people who lived in prominent residential areas of good-sized municipalities. The roads where I live got cleared very quickly, they usually do, but for the first few days there was no way for us to get out of our parking lot without moving the snow there ourselves. People were freaking out and just being able to get down the street to the nearest store for basic stuff became a really big deal.

Started snowing here sometime in the wee morning hours - coupla inches already on top of what was left over from the weekend. S'posed to get 5-8" total with snow continuing all day and into the evening, with some areas switching to snow/rain mix off and on.

Naturally I'm in the part of town where it's supposed to be all snow and the most accumulation... but OTOH maybe that's preferable to the dreaded "wintry mix" other places might get.

At least it's fairly dry, light snow this time and not the heavy slushy stuff we got last time.

Hard to tell what was done to the roads overnight, I think they were out trying to treat/clear them but they were already covered again when I was driving in to work. They plowed our lot about an hour ago and in another hour I don't think anyone will be able to tell they were here at all. Speaking of which I had to dig a path for our pups so they can drop a steamer. My terrier thought it would be cool to see how deep the snow was. She went flying and disappeared. She surfaced a few feet away.

Yes sir! The checkbook to our tax money is not accessible at this time due to the snow. We are saving trillions/day as a result!

I have some video of my kids jumping off the deck (which is 15 feet off the ground). Watching them do this I thought someone has been watching some episodes of Jackass without me knowing. Really, it looks like something they would do.

I too am in Maryland and in the middle of this mess. Having lived in Wisconsin this isn't the most snow I've seen, but it's definitely the most I've seen in the DC area over the past 25 years I've lived here.

Good news is, my office has been closed since last Thursday ( a week ago). Bad news is, much of that time I haven't had power, the temperature in my house has been as low as 47F, and my supply of firewood is getting short.

Hey Bill, I did not know you lived in the DC area. I'm in good ol' Glen Burnie. I was surprised this morning as the main roads were down to pavement. The lump packed snow and ice were gone. The neighborhoods are still not great but I had no problem navigating through it. I give the plow guys an A+....at least were I live. Baltimore is still very much under the snow and I understand DC is as well. Now we need a slow melt or flooding is going to be ugly.

I guess your Mitsu EVO is not going out in the mess. Fortunate for me my wife has a Mountaineer. I have commandeered her ship for the high snow seas! :D

AVGWarhawk

I do and to be honest Kevin, it cycles all the time. I'm on a peninsula on the bay. The water table is very high. Personally I think my house floats:-?. As a result my pump cycles all the time. I have a back up if the pump fails. One time the electricity went off and the secondary that works on a battery was overwhelmed. We had over 6 inches of rain in three days. My basement got about an inch of water. Had to install new carpet. Some furniture was ruined but yep, we need a slow melt!

Yep, I'm in Silver Spring. The Evo is in the garage, my wife's Subaru Forester is parked at the foot of the driveway. She happens to be out of town on business for the next 3 weeks, so I will be putting miles on her SUV until the snow melts.

Started snowing again sometime overnight - had put down about 2" by the start of morning rush hour and shows no signs of stopping. We're supposed to have another 3-4" by late afternoon with a total accumulation of 8-9" by the time it lets up sometime tonight.

They closed our offices at noon but told us to be ready to leave at 11:30 if the patients were all gone by then... which they were at my location. Ended up getting home right around noon which is fine with me, I was supposed to stay til 6 tonight to close up the place and I was NOT looking forward to that drive home.

Golly what am I gonna do with my extra 6 hours of free time?

:hmmm:

Oh that's right SINK EM ALL!

Yeah, stop sending that crap this way Frau kaleun. I see we are to get 2-4 tonight into tomorrow. We had a front end loader cleaning up snow in front of my house. Finally, two cars can pass at the same time. These one lane snow roads suck.

My street is still one lane on top of packed ice. :nope:

I think VDOT plowed it once at the start of the first storm.

We are looking at 2-3 inches which while not a lot by itself, will be over hard packed ice on my street. :nope:

The good news is that if I can get out of my neighbourhood, the other streets are just great.. just not mine. :damn:

frau kaleun

Still snowing here but judging by the view from my window, my street is in a lot better shape than it was 3 hours ago when I was coming home. Probably they've had time to treat it and run the plows over it again. Fortunately the temps are staying high enough that whatever they treat the roads with is actually working.

Doesn't look like that much additional accumulation on my car where I brushed everything off before driving home... but it's pretty windy, and the snow is dry and light, so it's probably not gonna build up on our cars as much.

The worst part of coming home early is that I put a pot roast in the slow cooker this morning and normally I wouldn't be here to smell it cooking, I'd just come in and it would be done and I'd have dinner. Now I've got at least 2-3 hours left of cooking time and it's already starting to smell wonderful even back here where my computer is, and nothing else I eat for the time being is hitting the spot because my brain is sending constant "POT ROAST! POT ROOOOOOOAAAAAST!!!" messages to my tummy.

EDIT: Snow day bonus - Young Frankenstein is on!

Off days from work and school because of snow...That's just funny. We don't have those. I remember a story of Russian kids our teacher used to tell us when we complained it was too cold to do sports outside. The Russian kids in Siberia or someplace like that got a day off from school when it went below -50 deg Celsius (Fahrenheit: Pretty god damn cold!) What did the kids do with their day off? They all went ice skating on an outdoors skating place. :o
