Hi Guys and Gals,

Is there anyway to address flooding? I hate it when I get depth charged and things start to flood and there is nothing I can do to address the problem which then kills me. It's so unceremonious. I find that game play suffers here.

P.S. what is the recommended strategy if a destroyer comes for you? Dive and hope for the best, or try to ram a fish down its gullet?

Put a repair crew in and fight the flooding
Trade off between trying to stem the flooding and hope the DD dont hear you or stay quiet

If you have a broadside on the destroyer, IMO, you should have a torpedo with 1 meter depth setting and at fast. best at 700 yards. And make sure you don't have silent running on when flooding.

Be very sure to order your crew OFF of silent run duty in order to allow them to grab their wrenches and silly putty. If you get caught up in the moment as DC's are banging all around, it's fairly common to forget to let them get to work in this way.

Also, I would highly recommend that you look to promote or recruit a Repairs specialist to your crew... especially a petty officer and keep him well rested but ready to jump to Damage control duty BEFORE you get pounded from above. This really boosts the repair efficiency and may save your sub., MAYBE!

Officer with repair speciality also helps.

If multiple compartments are flooding put some crew members in each. Crew members in compartment help with flooding and damage too. For some reason resting crew members in stern or bow quarters just lie still doing nothing:hmmm:
Boat is sinking but we need our rest:doh:
Damage control team fortunately can take care of these compartments too.

When you have flooding, first thing is turn off silent running. Your crew will not repair damage while at silent running, as it would make noise.

Second thing: Man your damage control team. You can do this quickly by double-clicking on the name of the team "Damage Control". But you should move as many off-duty personnel into the damage control team as you can. The idea is to make the green bar as big as possible. It is helpful to have an officer trained in repair and as many petty officers as you can also trained in repair. I find at least 2 petty officers is good.

Third thing: The compartments that are flooding will have two timers on the compartment. One is the time until the pumps are ahead of the flooding, and the second one is how long until the compartment is destroyed. Manually assign your damage control team to the compartment that is in the most danger of destruction! If you set them to repairing something non-critical your sub is done for.

Historically, the practice was to run deep and try to hide/evade. But in SHIII, unless it's early war and rough seas you can almost never escape. I find it better to attack the escorts rather than try and run from them. First, identify their class. Then look them up in the ship identification catalog and find their keel depth. Set your torpedo to run .5 meters deeper than that. Set your torpedo for magnetic detonation. Preferably a stern tube. Run at flank speed away from the escort until your stern is pointed directly at the escort. Run noisy. Get them to chase you. If they give chase in a straight line, wait until they close to 700m and then fire your torpedo. One hit and they are done for.

If they zig-zag while chasing you, wait until they close to 200m and drop a noise maker and turn 90 degrees left or right. They will reverse propellers and come to a dead stop hovering over the noise maker for as long as it is active. As soon as you have a good broadside solution and 200m range, put a torpedo into them.

My safest technique is to sidestep the oncoming destroyer and give him a tail-shot. It goes like this:

When you detect a destroyer approaching - turn against him till you have him approx 35 degrees on the bow. Continue straight ahead. If he is coming straight towards you your bow torps get an angle on him and you can take him with a bow torp going under him at an angle. Go full speed just before he approaches the 400 meters mark (minimum firing distance). Use TI on highest speed with magnetic fuze. You can also release a salvo from the same position. If this misses him, lower periscope and turn against him, full speed. He is not able to follow you around. When he has passed, periscope up. Track him as he continues the turn behind you and you continue your turn at full speed. He will end up with his broadside against you approx 400 meters behind you. Give him a TI at full speed, magnetic fuze. For this purpose I always have only TI's loaded aft. And a couple ready forward.

A variation, if you do not have time to turn against him is to let him pass beside you while you are at max turn. Just before he has passed turn against him. His side-throwers shall pass over you and the aft droppings beside you. Then go full aft while you turn after him. After you have started going backwards give opposite rudder, that way your bow turns against him. Soon you have him in the same position as in the first example. Same procedure.
