im sure you could find something online
an old navy salt and ex BB 34 crewman had a WW2 era American flag that he said once sailed above the USS New York, he was offering it for sale.
listed Dimensions were somewhere on the order of 29ft in length
EDIT: i do agree... the flag in SHV needs to be not quite half the size they currently have it at
The size and position (Aft!) in Mikhayl's photo would suit me.
but quibbling over flag realism in SHV is like complaining about wet socks on the Titanic.
Scroll down a bit, after the Bismark and Littorio:

They have probably made the flag so large to aid in ship ID whilst looking through a periscope??
For the influx of new players they are assuming will buy the simulation.

As long as they aren't floodlit at night, I'm fine with it.

So why not just put "SHOOT ME" or "DON'T SHOOT ME" on the sides in big letters....ah crap....that's a feature on easy.... well crud.:har:
This ship isn't even available to look at on the main UBI site yet, where'd it come from ?
(edit) wasn't having your flag lit up at night a rule for neautral ships though, so for them it'd be o.k. right?

Yeah, I hope the flag is not that size on anything other than the "easy" setting??

"wasn't having your flag lit up at night a rule for neautral ships though, so for them it'd be o.k. right?"
You are right there, to avoid any nasty sinkings of Neutral shipping.
It was also necessary for hospital ships to be floodlit (Im sure someone will correct me if im wrong and please do).;)
(edit): I used to hate it when I would spend absolutely ages stalking a single merchant at night in SH3 only to find that when it came to actually firing a screw, I would then notice the dreaded floodlights!!! =( haha

Nah, this one mate.
To be really finicky and picky - Flags have a rope running through them, with clips at each end to attach to halyards. That way, if hoisted correctly and made off tight on the cleat they flew tight. The flags shown here are too large and attached at 3 points - they look like washing hung out to dry with 3 pegs attching to a vertical washing line.

02-06-10, 05:28 AM
Thats some knowledge youve got there MLF. I didnt know that.
But youre right, they do (and always have) looked like mommas bloomers hung out to dry!!:D
It May have been different in WWII - instead of metal clips at the ends of the rope that goes through the flag, there might have been an "eye" in the ends of the rope. The halyard would have been attached to these "eyes" using a bowline knot.
MLF
So why not just put "SHOOT ME" or "DON'T SHOOT ME" on the sides in big letters....ah crap....that's a feature on easy.... well crud.:har:
Nah targets will either have a green outline or a red one so you know which ones to shoot at.:D

To get even more picky, that's the Rodney's camouflage scheme and not the Nelson's. But of course they're saying it's a Nelson class ship, so it's technically right. :O: But that flag is ridiculous.

Might be a product of the viewing angle, but the bow looks too short when you compare that image with the real photo.

This is IMO a bigger problem than an oversized flag which will be edited with first mods.

Has nobody else noticed the secondary armament looks a bit high? they all seem to be sttod on a platform. Also this looks like the earliest version of the Rodney, the ships looked far more interesting later in the war with the addition of more anti aircraft batteries. Surely the KGV class battleships were far more used in the war, would have liked to have seen a preview of these (as not on main website) as the models have been flawed in previous games. I could be very wrong, but I don't think Battle Ensign's were used in WW2 with any regularity. Of course there is the story of the Arizona putting it up during the attack on Pearl. If I am wrong I would love to hear about it though
I do know that at least some US ships still carry them. During a joint US/Canadian Sinkex (Operation Trident Fury, HMCS Huron) one of the US ships, which I embarrassingly forget the name of, flew a Battle Ensign in salute as Huron went down. They may have brought it just for the occasion however.

On the contrary, Battle Ensigns are still used today by the Royal Navy (not used often because we are not at war).
The link below makes reference to HMS Exeter as she turned to engage the Graf Spee:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_ensign
Some ensigns are raised annually on sunken warships to commemorate those who went down with their ships, two examples are the Royal Oak at Scapa Flow and HMS Ardent in Falkland Sound...
The wreck of the 'Royal Oak' is now an official war grave and there is an annual commemoration service. Royal Navy divers go down to the ship and raise a White Ensign in memory of the 833 crew killed. Are there other examples of flags being 'raised' under water?
André Coutanche, 15 August 2005
Here is another example: Independent Television News (ITN) reported yesterday evening, 21 May 2007, on the raising of a White Ensign under the sea, in Falkland Sound above the wreck of Her Majesty's Ship Ardent and the placing of two plaques on the wreck:
"FOR THOSE THAT LOST THEIR LIVES ONBOARD HMS ARDENT FOR THE FREEDOM OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS 21 May 1982"
during the landing of British forces on the islands in the Falklands War.

:) Would that "later in the war" perhaps be post 43? Nevertheless, we always had an issue with representing dramatic silhouette changes or additions to armament. The later is mostly due to the occlusion maps that add a lot to the feel of the ship, even with the dynamic shadows. Still it can be done, but it takes much more effort per ship.
Regarding the secondary armaments, you're definetly right! We have a classic issue of both the guns and the ship containing the "pedestal".
As for the KGV, they will of course be included in the game. However, you have to understand that no matter what ship we might choose to show, somebody would come and say "why that ship makes no sense, it was the other one that was much more interesting to be shown".
One of the tricks of submarine games and free roaming is that the player should never completely know "whats around the corner". If all we included was the KGV, the game world would have been kind of poor. So, expect more, much more.

i understood you meant the UBI suits and not all UBI guys but i wanted to take this opportunity to make this statement about complaining about UBI.
i feel blanket statements like this can be missinterpreted to unfairly apply to "all" UBI guys and the devs or the guys just working for a living dont make the decissions shouldnt be blamed.
i want to ask that anyone who posts a complaint about UBI please make a notation that you dont mean the devs when saying things like this
thank you

Personally
Would rather see some merchants/tankers
After all that is what I am at sea for
Though tis nice to see a battlewagon I dont expect to see them more than once - after I have sunk it anyway
:rotfl2:
Heres hoping there are more type= designations ingame than previous releases
Gives modders a greater scope to add a different class of ship that wont show where other should ie my old fave coastal merchants

QFT.
Once again there seems to be a fixation with large, fancy battleships & carriers, even though the Battle of the Atlantic was all about sinking commercial ships. I would be happy with about 3-4 generic varieties of merchants, troopships, & tankers, like in "Aces of the Deep", but somehow I doubt that even that many will ship with the game.

Plus, if you think about it for a moment the premise of the Dynamic Campaign video is unrealistic.
It advises that we can "change history" by attacking Force H & other groups of capital ships, when in reality sinking these units was extremely difficult. You had to:
A) Be in a position where they were sailing towards your sub, since BB's and CV's usually were faster than 20 kts
B) Get close enough to avoid detection
C) Calculate speed, bearing, and range on an object moving much faster than the average merchant ship.
The only BB's and CV's sunk at sea by U-Boats during WWII were the following:
Courageous
Ark Royal
Barham
Eagle
Block Island
Avenger
Audacity
That comes out to little more than one heavy unit sunk per year of the war by the ENTIRE U-BOAT ARM. It's also worth noting that "Block Island", "Avenger", and "Audacity" were basically mercantile units with speeds slower than a U-Boat (15-16.5 kts) & poor protection. Plus the sinking of "Ark Royal" was a very lucky, 1-in a million shot.
Hunting task forces was not feasible until the post-WWII era, when submerged speeds began to approach the speeds of surface ships. Recognizing this, the Kriegsmarine usually assigned U-Boats to sink merchant vessels alone, only attacking heavy ships under the most favorable circumstances. But hey, I suppose the all-important "casual players" need a dozen battleship scalps to make themselves feel good.

Yes I imagine the flags are shown a little to large.
Take a look at the U.S. Flag below on the USS Sarsfield EDD 837. ( My sig. )
Wasn't it in SHIII the Devs said the enlargement of the flags was for players ability to make sure it was the enemy? Or something like that.
As said a few times before, the flags can be modded, so no biggie.

So any expansion after 1943 will include the changes to ships armaments, as Nelson was reffited in november 1943? Hope the secondary armament is rectified, as the model looks really good!
I was thinking more along the lines that we havent been given a complete ship manifest for SHV, so all i was expecting were the ones previewed plus some extras. Its great to hear we will have the KGV but what others can we expect? Will there also be a museum to view the ships like SHIV? I suspect we will have either a Queen Elizabeth class or Royal Soverign class battleship for the British as well.
