View Full Version : My view on SHV

I'm sure there has been quite a few of these already, but I'm not trying to change anyones opinion, but maybe someone will be enlightened to what I have to say. (Also, this sentence ((this one right here)) will be the only time I mention DRM, how nice is that)

When I saw SHIV: U boat missions come out, I knew SHV was going to be a U-boat game. We here at SUBSIM greeted this add-on with open arms, commenting widely on the new features (air support, submarine detail and so on.) Now, when I started seeing some of the first SHV videos, the I noticed that we were only seeing a Type VII and the new graphics details, I knew this new Silent Hunter will be lacking somewhere.
So they chopped off the last two years of the war and there is only one playable TYPE of U-boat. It is not the end my friends.
I think, from what I know, you don't just jump into a lake nekkid if you think the water might be cold. This game will be expanded. No matter what, the demand will be high enough, but this is Silent Hunter's way of moving on into the new age of gaming. Starting with base Silent Hunter IV, the U-boat mission add-on was, in my opinion, them testing the waters in terms of an expansion. They sat back and watched how we accepted it, how we used it, and how we worked with it. But, if my expansion idea is correct, maybe we will get some other hardware to play around with? This dynamic campaign the devs have going is certainly an improvement, believe it or not, I think even I chided that I want to change the war when I sink something big and important, or when I start sinking merchants like fish in a barrel. This may seem feeble and stupid, but imagine doing this with the Bismarck, or the Tirpitz, or something of that nature. This seems like heresy for those hardcore subsimmers out there, but this opens up a whole other spectrum of options open to the player. What we wanted and were expecting out of SHV was more options, we got them, in a few unexpected places. I have high hopes for this game, No matter what happens. It can be modded, they said so. So I want to say stop crying and let us modders take care of it when the time comes. That being said, with some of these new features, I see a lot of things even I could do to this game to give what the people are asking for. That sounds like a good deal to me.

My two cents:ping:

"and there is only one playable TYPE of U-boat"

Sorry I just skim this forum is this right?

If right then it gives me another year keeping this Rig going till BF3 as SH is off the list.

I liked trying different boats and starting off in a rubbish boat and building up. Dont get me wrong I undertsand if thats what they have done to make it more intersting inside etc.

Well it is nice to know that not all of the modders are boycotting it SH. I will buy it. I am more put off by what I have read on the newly opened website then by the OSP/DRM. If it is bad out of the box, then I will wait and see how it can be modded. If mods can't save it, then oh well. I have wasted more money then that on more frivolous things in the past /shrug.

Good post. I agree and prob will get SH5 eventually. I also mentioned somewhere else that I think the missing years and boatswill be added as an expansion, along with some other missing things.
I also like the idea that if I do sink the Hood I will get credit 4 it and she will never face the Bismark, nor will I be able to encounter her on my next patrol(as I can now on SH3).
if I save the Bismark it WILL make a diff, sure she may sink at a later battle but I will have help change a bit of history, but this alone will not affect wars outcome.
And If a real u-boat commander started the war in 39 do u really think he would have still been on active duty in 43? Maybe, but I would think he most likely would have been appointed to either U-boat command or as a trainer.:)

You had me going along with you and would have helped supported your thread until...

You put the insult "crying" in it.

That's when you lost my support.

Terribly sorry FIREWALL, that's a little bit of the Illinoian in me shining through. I usually skim these forums as well, and all I have been seeing is complaining (and I'm sure what I think of complaining is totally different than what a lot of other people think is complaining), up here, complaining and crying mean the same thing. it wasn't intended as an insult.

Yeah, it seems that now everyone is a crybaby for expressing their disagreement with something. But remember the newborn's motto... "if you don't cry, you don't eat". :yep:

Cheers

Four could be considered several ;)

From Google dictionary

Several is used to refer to an imprecise number of people or things that is not large but is greater than two.

Since four is generally considered greater than two and at the same time commonly interpreted by the reasonable public as not large, four is considered several.

Sgtmonkeynads' objection is overruled. :know:

:haha: Ok....I stand corrected...but would you rather have four or seven playable subs?

or I hired you to do a small job and promised several dollars an hour....then pay you four..I bet you'd be mad.

:salute:

Hey, just noticed this...go to the community section on the official whatever page....what kind of sub is at the top?
Why would they do that ? Are they lying to us about what their intension's were vs. what we got in the final product?
For those that don't want to go look for themsselves, it's a IX.

What gets my goat at the present is that the really nice Collector's edition is not available for delivery in the U.S.:-?
