I love a good joke as much as anyone, but enough is enough.

We have a few threads now that claim to release "NEW" or "UPDATED" information or screen shots concerning Silent Hunter 5.

Not only is this very distracting and annoying to any members who might be serious about reviewing such material when it actually IS released... but for ANY internet forum... ESPECIALLY the Subsim Radio Room, misleading forum thread titles are generally considered to be a no-no.

I understand the frustration of many of the members here, however Subsim has a reputation to uphold, and posting negative or angry things about Silent Hunter 5 is all good and well...

posting fake images - even as a joke - and passing them off through thread titles that indicate that it is REAL MATERIAL... IMHO... should in the very least be a BRIG WORTHY OFFENSE.

I have taken the liberty of creating a "Funny or Fake Pictures, screens and videos" thread.

I think it would be much more appropriate of our members to post such material there, without misleading the other members and discrediting Subsim.com any further than some of us already have.

yeah i agree. As much as i like humor and i tend to fool around from time to time i do hate these misleading topics. Esspecially since real new stuff is so scarce.

Nope... the thread title there clearly indicates what the reader is getting into.

he KNOWS when he clicks on that what he is in for.

THAT thread is the appropriate place to post such shots.

However...

thread titles with those images that claim to be:

"New User Interface for SH5... NEW 1/2/2010"

"New screenshot released"

etc.

and then proceed to link you to an image such as the ones listed in that thread...

very inappropriate

Good job GR, the date thing pissed me off too. There used to be a time when a member would search for something and ask the the proper questions in the proper threads. I've seen a bit of disorder in other sections too but SH5 takes the cake. This opening up of 20 threads per day only adds to the sense of mayhem that's been going on in the last weeks. And let's not forget the polls... :haha:. I'd like to start a poll myself...

Well, since I defended Drebbel on similar charges, I have to take the other side. I'm not really a lawyer, I just play one at Subsim.

I'm with Tater - I didn't know whethere there were new screenshots. I also didn't really care. I got the joke, and it was a funny one.

oh dont get me wrong... i instantly recognized the joke but look at it from this point of view Tater... steve:

A random person is searching for information on Silent Hunter 5 and google directs him to Subsim Radio Room forums.

he checks the place out and is excited by all of the "new" information

he goes into a thread

and comes to the conclusion "Wait a minute... this is not a helpful, thought provoking place to be... these guys are just a bunch of clowns."

he then searches elsewhere and ends up joining another forum.

potential new blood... GONE WITH THE WIND.

Subsim Radio Rooms is supposed to be a helpful and positive environment. i have absolutely nothing against posting these joke threads when done appropriately, but IMHO it is a massive waste of time and resources when someone is seriously searching for new information and they come to subsim and end up with misleading thread titles that point them to completely useless and false information.

try to look at it from that perspective.

as a group of subsimmers... we are supposed to be helpful to people who wish to enter into our hobby.

by misleading them - whether they are a member or not - we fail to help.

- simulation gameplay
- rough sea weather
- dynamic shadows
...etc.

This is pathetic.

People are blowing off some steam from the tremendous disappointment of what has happened with SH5. Once again it seems UBI is rushing, and have cut MUCH content.

Then to top it off the put this DRM thing which to me is inane.

Ubi is continually putting holes into what seemed like a very promising game.

Now back on topic. Lighten up GR and all those doing plus ones.

This is only a game, and someone making jokes about it is not the end of the world.

So he did! I missed that the first time. No, I agree, it shouldn't be banable or brigable or anything like that. I didn't mean to +1 that bit. But I agree with the sentiment. No joke is funny when you've heard it six times already. I've already stopped clicking on threads that say "new screenshot" which means I'll likely miss any actual updates that get posted.

Personally I'm happy about these little spots of humour in an otherwise violently negative climate here.

I'm glad some members have decided to tackle the issues with humour unstead of bitching and moaning. They shed much better light on subsim than the otherwise negative current norm.

I think i have tried to be fairly balanced between the negative and positive posts, not really taking either side until a good, final version review is available.

i think it is the least we could all do.

Alright guys, I can't help to react here. I am the person responsible for the second screenshot. As I stated in my original post: "I apologize to all deceived. I thought when I stated in the post #1 "Silent Hunter 5: The Battle of Atlantic, RPG of the Year 2010." and that "I couldn't resist...." you would catch my drift..."
I do not feel bad about making the post in the first place because it was created as my way telling Ubisoft I do not appreciate the course the SHV is taking.
The photoshop was done intentionally with less skill tan I am capable of and I thought that the captioning was just dead give-away.

@all who understood or misunderstood but took the joke right: I have to create something with comical value to oppose all the SHV-bashing threads and deal with my own frustration about the project. Thanks!

@GoldenRivet: I understand your standpoint and some of the points you have made in post #1 but there are some statements I disagree with.
I understand that joke is funny the first time and gets annoying by repeating. If you noticed mine was the first thread on the subject and (I thought) I gave enough "pointers" to be recognized as a joke. I cannot be held responsible for another threads that followed my idea. I agree with you that the thread subject was misleading but, frankly, if it stated "joke" in the subject that would just destroy the punchline altogether.
My problem with your opening post is that it came across as THREAT rather than WARNING. There is no need to "pull the rank" here in Subsim community.

I have left the joke stand for only few hours before CLEARLY stated that it wasn't real. Any "potential members to be discouraged" were cut to bare minimum, if any. Ad as far as "joining another forum" goes. There are not too many on this subject and Subsim always have been (and stay) #1.

I will refrain from posting similar stuff in the future, though.

Yes, some stuff has been annoyingly overdone lately, and it seems there's also room for trolling amidst the confusion as seen in that ban-poll.
And I'm all for dumb retarded absurd jokes, for which I can laugh for hours, but the same joke repeated a hundred times ceases to be funny any more.

I also think it's about time to get back to normal, and wait to see what we can expect after we all try SH5 (and hopefully, but maybe not, we won't have to endure this chaos again). :rock:

When UBI publishes the shooped image conus00 posted, then THAT is misleading information.

When conus, or any other random forum member posts, it's NOT official information. It's not more complicated that that. Sorry, but there should be no rules regarding humor just because a % of forum members are credulous goons.

Again, part of the humor is seeing that reaction. Posting it as a fake shot DOES wreck the punch line since the joke is not just the shot, it's watching the reaction to it. Really.

the key issue is that new content is being released every few days now... at least once a week, when i go to the SH5 thread i want to see that content.

frankly im done discussing it.

We all know it is wrong to post misleading thread titles.

one of the main rules of internet forum manners and simple common sense.

im here for content and to make an educated decision as to whether or not to purchase SH5.

if you want to make jokes all day thats awesome... really its cool... i just think it shouldnt be a total time waster.

The big joke on me at that meet was when I had Dan for a roommate for four days, and told Neal what a great guy I though Dan was and would really like to meet their spokesman, Elanaiba, someday.

Anything useful in that thread besides the fact that SH5 will have DRM and that a lot of people won't be buying it right away? Or are you just implying that, since DRM hasn't been removed and a big bunch of people are against it, I have no real reason to buy SH5?? Because it would make yours a very impolite and intrussive post. :shifty:

I'll serve as a Guinea Pig, buy it, try it myself (with no external influences telling me how crappy it is), and post my impressions for my buddies at the 24th (other people will probably do the same thing around here). I also thought once that Steam was bad, but after trying it, I was shown it was a very powerful and well made plataform. I'm not saying that the same thing will happen with SH5 (I seriously doubt it, due to the way OSP works in the SP field), but I must try it to put any veredict out. And, I also want to see how the final product ends up (regardless of all the DRM stuff), and at least, maybe show some support to the devs if the title raises some fun for me.

Oh come come, the game's so degenerated in the eyes of many, if not most on this forum.

If the only fun they can have because all, or most, of their hopes for the new game have been dashed is to scoff ...then let them scoff!

I joined Subsim because of an interest in WW2 Naval warfare and submarine warfare in particular I simply don’t need a quasi education / mystical Das Boot inspired role play –

Look at the interface; look at the architecture of the videos or screenshots you’ve seen, other than the exterior graphics there is not the slightest evidence that the game has anything for those of us seeking a realistic, hard, challenging or historically accurate experience.

I’m even doubtful if the released game will be released with a German speech option, its been designed with kids in mind, outside Germany the majority of the target audience is not proficient in German so why spend money and time to include German speech.

It stands to reason the game will be released with the Hollywood American we heard on the trailer. (Absolutely no offence meant, or implied for any American readers) It’s a suspicion not a fact, guess we will have to wait and see.

Personally I’ve found a lot of the humor in the midst of all this disappointment enormously entertaining –

Besides having checked in to the SH3 mod forum there's some great work over there – they have even got a new diesel room modded for crying out loud - I may just re-install SH3 - (removed to make way for SH5) to celebrate the release of SH5.

By the way if any of the Developers read this I mean no offence to work with – I work in publishing myself and am all too familiar with management imposing concepts or ideas that are way out of touch with the client base – just make sure you’re not in the firing line when the game flops – it happens

rascal101, I guess now you might be a bit harsh. Though I am also a hardcore realism fan over anything else (graphics lala included), I think SHV per se doesn't seem to bad. The only deal breaker presently for most people appears to be the DRM, though I'd bet many will after a while nonetheless give in and buy it. Sure, whether it will kick SHIII+GWX from its throne, or whether it will get a little to childish feel with the new interface and the RPG elements, that will have to be seen. I won't make a judgement before I try it -- possible in a few years as budget title without DRM (and by then hopefully again with GWX, another good reason to wait!). The campaign and the enhance AI including wolf packs may be a little sweetner.

I would like an announcement that an addon with all the Types II, IX, XXI and XXIII (even with generic interiors) as well as a SHIII kind of full war campaign with all the associated stuff will follow. The war career doesn't need to influence the war, nor account for all merchant ships sunk, although it would be nice if just tonnage and warships sunk could make a little effect (even if it's just a newspaper article...).

The only thing I find sad these days is that the real loosers of the DRM issue are the development studios, not UBI. But maybe some nice publisher will buy/contract the SH studio once UBI is "economical history"...

I’m even doubtful if the released game will be released with a German speech option. Outside Germany the majority of the target audience is not proficient in German so why spend money and time to include German speech.

I must admit I'm a little worried about that as well. I do hope I can have German voices with English subtitles, like in SH3. I don't know a word of German but to me the American accents in SH3 (and in the SH5 trailer) sound all wrong on a German U-boat.

Still, there is no evidence either way yet for SH5. I'm sure that a day of work from a handful of semi-decent German voice actors wouldn't break the bank, even on this game. I remain hopeful. :)

Anything useful in that thread besides the fact that SH5 will have DRM and that a lot of people won't be buying it right away? Or are you just implying that, since DRM hasn't been removed and a big bunch of people are against it, I have no real reason to buy SH5?? Because it would make yours a very impolite and intrussive post. :shifty:

I'll serve as a Guinea Pig, buy it, try it myself (with no external influences telling me how crappy it is), and post my impressions for my buddies at the 24th (other people will probably do the same thing around here). I also thought once that Steam was bad, but after trying it, I was shown it was a very powerful and well made plataform. I'm not saying that the same thing will happen with SH5 (I seriously doubt it, due to the way OSP works in the SP field), but I must try it to put any veredict out. And, I also want to see how the final product ends up (regardless of all the DRM stuff), and at least, maybe show some support to the devs if the title raises some fun for me.
